I'm confused... this isn't asking anything... are you spontaneously advertising the US navy?

Good luck, my liege.

When you get the chance, tell the Escapist how you're going. Maybe with some pictures?

I have only one question.

Do you have "In the Navy" looped on your mp3 player right now? It might enable you to be all you can be.

All joking aside, good luck, and pack some Gravol.
Next person to sing that song around me gets an ax to the face...

See, threads don't ALWAYS have to be questions. This is not an advertisement, this me telling you guys what I'm doing with my life.

Well, good luck with that.
Personally I wouldn't call it "accelerating my life" because that implies it'll be over more quickly, too. Which it might.
Definitely go for the college education if at all possible!

I started my paperwork for enlisting in the United States Navy today, currently plowing through my clearance stuff. I'm planning on going into Special Warfare, SEALs specifically, but since I can't choose that as my initial rating I'll probably pick something in the Nuclear Program. I can't wait to finish my senior year so can go to Great Mistakes and after that BUD/S.
Since I'm planning on making a career in the Navy, I'll probably end up using the Seaman to Admiral program to go to college, or just take some internet classes sponsored by Uncle Sam.

Later.
*2 seconds after reading the topic subject*

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

*huge gasp*

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Best of luck to you. I did it because I didn't want to owe money for college, even though I knew it'd suck, and yes, it has sucked hard so far, and I'm an IT; arguably the best rate in the Navy for advancement/ease of work. TS-SCI clearance should help with a government job after I finish throwing my inhibitions away at a few years of college.

Nukes is no joke, man. Hard living. I thought they'd be like playing with switches, pulling levers, and donning radiation suits... Naw, they work with the mechs, hands on, doing the grunt work of playing with the hardware of it all. But, that's just what I hear from other nukes, I'm not one myself.

It's a sacrifice, and I don't mean that in a patriotic bullsh*t way, but a sacrifice of personal freedoms and quality of life for the sake of training and eventually higher education.

I'd personally suggest getting an Associates or Bachelor's degree, and THEN going into the service to pay off college debt, and be a commissioned officer from the get-go. Maybe fly some jets. Sounds more fun than slaving around in the belly of the boat, doesn't it?

Again, best of luck, and I hope it works out for you. I'm personally thankful for the training, clearance, and clean record military service has provided, but I'm QUITE ready to GTFO after 4 years of being on two separate nuclear aircraft carriers.

351 days to go till my separation!

WOOHOO!

I'll never, especially with my numerous unlikely accomplishments, try to steer you away from something that you want to do...but have you looked at the attrition rates for either of those programs? I'm ex Navy, and I got to work not only with a number of nuke dropouts, but also quite a few BUD/S dropouts.

The nuke program is very, very difficult. The reenlistment bonus is grand, should you wish to reenlist, but you're almost guaranteed sub duty, and you'll see less leave than anyone else on the ship. Nuke school is not fun, and neither is the service as a nuke. Many of the nuke dropouts who I worked with fell a bit behind, then gave up and went into different ratings.

BUD/S matches the academic filter of nuke school with a more physical/mental filter. They are quick to drop people at the first sign of physical trouble (I mean as simple as a twisted ankle- you're possibly out and in a crap rating as a regular enlisted.)

I'm really not trying to nay-say your dreams or anything. Just be careful, and don't believe the recruiters. If/when you make it through either of those challenging programs, I'll be the first to tip my hat to you. Good luck.
Bah, ninja'd!...

But yes, definately what he said.

2 years of Nuke school.

Highest suicide rate in the Navy.

Shitty working conditions with generally shitty people. Engineers live by jungle law. The most aggressive chest-pounding mech always eats before the rest of the tribe. The others must wait their turn.

*Tips hat to Ignignoct*

Nothing quite like being locked up in close quarters with people you hate for long periods of time. At least in Combat Systems, most of the ratings attract geeks. Not too many chest-pounders in sonar.

MEPS... O MEPS... I went through that today and boy, I have never coughed harder in my life. But that pales in comparison with what happened earlier today.

I started my physical, and started getting worried as we moved closer to eyes. My vision has never been great, and was stressed out the past few days freaking out that I'd be disqualified. Turns out, my visions correctable to 20/20. Hooya, right? Now that'd I'd had a chance to calm down, I figured the rest of the day would be a breeze. Color check time, no problems... I thought. Turns out, Uncle Sam thinks I see in black and white. B frakking S. I've never had any trouble with my color vision (although my sister said that explains my wardrobe.) So I spoke with a doctor later, and we look over the Ishihara book, and apparently, I can see the difference. The problem is, I couldn't put the dots into numbers. F my life. On the upside, my sister's boyfriend had a similar experience, but he consulted an outside doc and now he's in flight school. So, I'm going to do the same, see if can't make this work. Also, when I got home, I went on the internet and looked for tests and corrections. I really didn't have all that much trouble, had my no-color-blind mom checking my answers.
And as a small shaft from life, when I went to Panera purchased a delicious Jones soda. And under the cap I read-

You just helped save a child's eyesight.

Thank you

What kinda thread is this? Doesn't even have a bloody topic. Methinks possible propaganda/advertising but that could be my paranoid nature.
