their trying to police the internet? you know what I say: good fucking luck. there are too many people using it to control all of the internet. and besides, that means that they will need access to all the web pages in the world.ALL the porn sites, ALL the people that hate them, ALL the hundreds of trillions of web pages. Hell, there are thousands on this one site, imagine 4chan or face book or twitter or hundreds of other places that are like that. they will need access to all of them. If this passes, prepare to see the escapist became either A) a shell of a website once internet Hitler gets to power or B) a Resistance against these people. we're just a tiny corner, and yet we are hundreds of pages and hundreds of people strong. yet, I doubt this will get passed anywhere but remote country's or Australia.


EDIT: I just got this manual from ACTA, which I will pronounce akta, thr fist three rules are
1. all pirated software must be deleted
2. all pirates must have their internet taken away so that they can not do it again, since no one learns from mistakes ever

While I would like pirates to receive their rightful punishments, this is not the way to do so. But I seriously doubt this will actually be implemented.

If the US signs it, free speech protections won't apply: the Constitution states that treaties are to be treated as the supreme law of the land. If we sign a treaty that circumvents a constitutional protection, we lost that protection.

Well I still don't want the government looking through my computer for the same reason I wouldn't them looking through my house. While I am not guilty of the crime of piracy, I still have secrets I would rather keep hidden. I think most people in the world do.

Yes, which is exactly why this won't happen. The Government, despite what many people think, is not made up of complete idiots. While many of them would probably like this system to be implemented, they have to be aware of the massive amount of backlash this would receive.

PS: I know comparing this treaty to prohibition and the criminal aftermath of it doesn't make much sense and i just chose this comparison to underline the fact that us "spreading the word" about the treaty isn't going to change anything. And what i wrote above isn't in any way meant as a flame or to "stir up trouble"...just my way of responding to the panic this kind of stuff (the treaty...not my posts) triggers.

PSS: I wouldn't set to much store in the article to begin with...everyone can publish on the internet and for the whole "wiki" stuff there is no guarantee that it isn't completely false or exaggerated but since there isn't any proof to the that it is one or the other i can't say that it isn't true....i'm just saying don't get to worked up about things like this until you have it from an reliable source that it is in effect.

PSSS: If you do miss the "reliable source telling you this or some other treaty along it's line is in effect" and you do manage to get yourself in trouble because you are "pirating (is this a real word?)"....well...then you are just dumb enough to deserve it.

Problem is, it's not a case of being caught having illegal files. It's a case of being accused of having such files, and the big question is how you can tell what is illegal and what isn't.

Let me give you an example. In the UK, it is legal to make a single backup of any computer software for personal use. This means I could take any PC game, place the contents of the disk into an ISO file, and as long as I don't hand that file to anyone else, then there is nothing stopping me from doing so. In fact, any contract-like clause included with the software that said that I am not allowed to do so would be considered to be a denial of my statutory rights as listed within UK Copyright Law.

Now, lets say this goes through and that I have backed up every single piece of computer software I have. As there is no way of telling what is a legal copy and what isn't, short of catching someone downloading it illegally, I could be accused of owning illegal ISO files. And as this act states, if I'm accused three times, then I lose my Internet privileges, regardless as to if I am legally in the wrong or not.

Now, there is also the matter of what data the Internet processes. It processes fucktonnes of it, too much for the ISPs to be able to monitor every single packet that goes through. As ISps would be held accountable for being unable to do their jobs in checking to see what data breaks the law, they would, as that angry aussie said, have to prevent us from uploading anything. This means all independent artists would have no easy way to show their works; musicians, painters/drawers, webcomic owners, podcast producers, etc. Oh, and you can rule out The Escapist as well.

As you can see, this would damage more than just "those darned pesky pirates"...
