Did the article actually say the child was offended, or was it just the dad?
Just the dad. I wouldn't be surprised if the kid was laughing her butt off. I know I was.

So what's the party line? Slamming the parents for being offended?
For once I'm here to defend something. I can see how the parents might be worried that their child could get upset by this comment. But I don't think the child would be offended by that.

To be honest, some of the comments on this thread are just stupid. Saying that these parents are... let me find one to quote.

and guys like HIM are raising the up-and-coming generations....well fuck if an apocolypse DOSEN'T happen, someone kill me, please -_-
Really? Imagine for a moment that you were married, you and your wife couldn't have children so you had to adopt. You'd have to devote your life to making your new child feel welcome, like a part of your family. And then a video game this child is playing starts making fun of orphans.
Can you not understand why a foster parent might be terrified by that? But the guy's clearly a good father, the girl's just turned around and said it's just a joke and I like the game.

Of course, on balance the game is actually complimentary of orphans in the end. And should the guy have gone to the media? No. But I can see where he's coming from.
you know, i woulden't understand where he's coming from, even in that situation, why? because, 1the girl said she likes the game, 2-it's the DAD having the issues, not the child. so where IS the problem? if the child either dosen't notice, dosen't care, or understands the context of the situation and finds it funny, then there is NO problem.

besides the fact that, i grew up, in a world where if someone, GOD FORBID, offends you, you SUCK IT UP, AND MOVE THE FUCK ON. now, it turns out, if someone offends you, laws are made, companies are destroyed, and words in the language are changed.

i'll say it again, people like him, make me wanna shoot myself.

I'm adopted and I have to say. I thoroughly enjoyed the jokes about being adopted and all. They were hilarious.

Yes let's focus on the fact that the orphan is being mocked (Not overweight people) and the fact the stupid parentless orphan overcomes trials and wins despite the mockery. Let's just be oversensitive people and see the mockery.

"Outrage" like this only makes me more and more want to see a game company create a game that offends everyone and I mean everyone.

If your adopted child's ego is completely shattered by something a character in a video game says, you've been a poor excuse for a parent. Bonus points for adoption, though.

Okay, this guy has a legitimate concern.

He's not asking for anything unreasonable, it DOES directly target small childern, the audience it is advertised for.

That's nothing, I heard Portal 1 is offensive to people from INSERT TOWN HERE.

Seriously, if you sell a game to 675,000 people (on day 1) and one person gets insulted by a fictious character talking to another fictious character, I'd call that pretty fair.

Especially when GLADos isn't talking to YOU, she's talking to 'Chell.

"literally the worst thing I could have probably heard."
I 'literally' don't believe that. Especially on the internet.

An Englishman, a Scotsman and an Irishman...... oh no wait hang on. Sorry I might offend British and Irish people. I'll have to end it there.

Rated E for everyone. (Except orphans)

At 10, I think she should already know about being adopid and all the in and outs, how long does he need to wrap her up in cotton wool. It's obvious they didn't make her.

Responses here are so typical, you're all gamers that aggressively defend video games to the death. I don't even need to click the comments anymore to know what responses are going to be like.

While it's true that there's nothing really offensive in it save for a few people, I understand that the dad was shocked to hear the remark out of the blue. He didn't say he was hiding it from his daughter, he said it just never came up. He was waiting for an opportune time to sit down and have a talk about her being adopted.

That's why it probably came to such an offensive shock, because now they're going to have to tackle the issue right away since shes heard that, rather than wait for whatever time they might have felt appropriate.
Its less about "it was in a game, they're not gamers and won't know" and more "seriously, deal with it, what do you think the real world is like?".

People need to grow thicker skin. Christ, my family never talks about my brother being dead, but if a game goes "you're brother is dead, haha" then I wouldn't be offended by it. Its not meant as a remark to me, its at the character.

Humour will usually offend someone. Truly funny humour always will. They should probably just deal with it.

And yeah, I only read the first page, so if this has been responded to a gazillion times, feel free to ignore me

Yes it was such a shock, because it's not like Glados doesn't insult Chell for being adopted in the earlier parts of the game. Hell Glados does it to a much worse degree by outright saying that she's adopted because her biological parents did not lover her and abandoned her. You mean to tell me the guy and his daughter had played all the way up to that point and weren't offended by the earlier comments?

"Rated E for everyone except adopted children" I bet he thinks he's so damn clever with that little quip. Where the hell do news outlets even find people like this? Do they just call up the papers and say "OMFG A GAME OFFENDED ME!!!"? Douche looking for his fifteen minutes of fame is douche.

What I can't tell is why playing Portal 2 made this girl think she was adopted, especially that instance. The entire point of the example joke is that Wheatley isn't nearly as effectual a villain as GLaDOS, thying pathetically to belittle you. It might be convincing if GLaDOS did it, but I don't see why the girl got stuck onto the idea in the first place.

OH GOD WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!!!

These people annoy me to no end. Your likely to hear more offensive things said in a grade 5 classroom then in portal 2. It's called harmless comedy. Deal with it.
