Hmmm...it would appear that his complaint wasn't that it was offensive, rather that it was too offensive for a game rated "E". That's fair enough, I guess, and not the same as simply chanting "think of the children".
I can agree with that. The amount of insults Wheatley and GLaDOS throw your way I don't think the game should be E for Everyone. I imagine small children would lightly be more hurt by it than most.
If I recall, Valve said they were surprised that the game got an "E" rating at at all, obviously assuming it would get a "T" like the original did. But, then again, do you think anyone at the ESRB is adopted or knows anyone adopted? Do you think any of them even heard the joke, their job being to go through every single part of a game's content and objectively create consumer advice based on it? ...the answer should be obvious, I hope.
I'd say it is a very fine line anyway. There's no blood in the game, no real violence, there is no swearing or sexual content blah blah blah. It doesn't actually cross any set out lines. But at the same time your constantly being oppressed for much of the game by these onmipetent voices, most of which seem to have it out for you and insult you any chance they get. Anyone over the age of 10 would shrug it off but I could still see a small child taking it personally. But it is a very fine line. I don't think it's nessassarily enough to give it a T but it still feels like it shouldn't be for Everyone.

I'm also pretty sure that a similar line was wheeled out in Portal 1, and I don't recall knickers being twisted over that game (unless it's people who are sick of Still Alive [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzmUde_EK5Y] and the "cake is a pie" meme. Plenty of e-knickers were twisted over thouse).

I can see why someone might be offended by this but I don't see any good reason to make a big fuss about it.

Valve could say they're sorry but I don't think they need to because worse things happend in video games than this.
(The fact that you can get killed in this game is one.)

Somewhere, someone is offended. Meanwhile, on the Escapist, internet-people are offended at them being offended. The circle continues.

I think people are being harsh in saying that this guy overreacted.

It was being thrown at the main character as an insult, but the girl who heard it was ten, so I think she took it to mean that, because their was an insult about it, being adopted is wrong (or bad, or whatever you think a ten year old would contextualise that situation into).

I personally found it funny, part of banter between characters, and I don't think their will be a change in material in terms of the voice overs in game.

NB: E for everyone? American rating system I take it?

My portal 2 box says 12+. I guess we Brits have the right idea in terms of age restrictions (in this situation).

My opinion, Portal is a game for all ages (my 7 year old cousin completed portal 1, now halfway through portal 2) just maybe portal 2 should be approached differently due to the larger volume of dialouge and rivalry between 3 characters.

This just in ESRB updates rating System

A now replaces E to donate Games suitable for All audiences.

E will now be used exclusively to donate games suitable to everyone.. Except for orphans...

All games will now also be rated with S denoting the media may be offensive to overly sensitive individuals who are incapable of resolving obviously sensitive issues within their nucleated family group and should be cloistered in a cave deep in ostrich territory where it is easy to bury their heads in the sand and never face the World.

They call that offensive?

You know what offensive is?

"My son is a fat blimp pilot, and in the game that tham ther high-tech contraption tells him blimps aren't graceful. Well tootnanny, that just steams my mellon. Sure he may not be an actual eagle, but a blimp is graceful flight and how dare they say that! I called up the guy that sold that there game to me, he told me to call the store. I went to the store and they told me to go to the games department supervisor. Ya see! They're giving me the runaround! But thank God Almighty the media is on my side to help me turn a joke that didn't actually have the perceived effect I thought it did, into a crusade against the insensitivity of some writers that try to make jokes without sex or murder in them."

The bit that bugs me is that they chose the part where Weathly tries to be mean to Chell. Why not the part where GLaDOS teases Chell that she found her parents in storage? For an orphan, that part would have been a lot more aggravating. But hey, and I'm not making accusations, just putting it out there, the dad may not be smart enough to understand anything beyond "Nanny nanny boo boo stick your head in doo doo". Now I'm not trying to not be offensive with this post, but I believe that if I were to rave about how often my lineage and heritage and people and friends and family and believes and way of life and dreams are mocked, made fun of and demonized in the media, I'd die before I finish ranting.

I also find it strange that the girl's name is Zoey, as in Zoey from Left 4 Dead, played by the same actress that plays Chell. Coincidence, maybe, we'll let mainstream media sort that out.

Some people just lack a sense of humour or they're just sitting there waiting for something remotely offensive and jump on it. The quote is followed by GLaDOS saying "What's wrong with being adopted?"

It is said over and over again that Wheatley is a moron. The quote they're upset about is taken out of context. I wonder if VALVe will even say anything...

I just saw the heading for this story and laughed; seriously, someone is offended by a moronic, demented robot in a video game insulting adopted people in a juvenile and hilarious attempt to mock the protagonist who only then retracts the statement almost immediately? I mean cummon, can't you take a joke?

I can understand the possible awkwardness that could have arisen especially as he'd reportedly never sat down and talked about the issue with his kid, but then humour can also be a great ice-breaker and maybe he could have latched onto this rather light-hearted joke and used it as a jumping off point for discussion. I don't know all the circumstances surrounding their particular situation so perhaps that might not be such a great idea but he shouldn't really feel offended; perhaps the fact he did just reveals his insecurities about being an adopted parent or reveals a tendency to take things too seriously.

If I was in his position I probably too would have been taken aback slightly at first and I would rightly be concerned with how this would affect my child but instead of getting in a bit of a tither, I'd recognise the joke for what it was, that is a joke and laugh it off and explain to my kid how certain touchy issues can still be funny in the right context. I mean, he complains about how that particular joke is "offensive" to adopted people but as far as the report goes, he seemingly has no qualms about it's "offensiveness" towards fat people. We gotta give them a voice, it's hard to make out what their saying through all the food.

Oh, someone tries to get some money by using out-of-context quotes. Yet again.

I don't believe that she was really offended, especially because GLaDOS said that nothing is wrong with being adopted two seconds later. It's just the money. Like always.

Hey. If you make a game that millions of people play, you're bound to offend at _least_ one :p

Clearly the shock of that statement rendered him temporarily deaf, seeing as GLaDOS immediately calls Wheatley out on it. That was actually one of my favourite parts, it made me go "She does care!"
You yourself must have been rendered deaf by the shock of her caring because it's closely followed by "You are adopted and it's terrible, but play along"

Okay, if this wasn't an article I'd say "don't feed the troll", but right now, I blame the Allies(especially you, USA and UK). Seriously, in post-Soviet countries people are far less sensitive, guess that's because you won't get a million if some company has "insulted" you by not putting enough X in their product/commercial/office fishtank.

Someone should probably tell her never to play the Zombie Island of Dr. Ned from Borderlands then.

So, in summary, "Media makes story out of non-incident on slow news day, invents issue, makes people sound like they care more about it than they do.

Film at eleven."
