Responses here are so typical, you're all gamers that aggressively defend video games to the death. I don't even need to click the comments anymore to know what responses are going to be like.

While it's true that there's nothing really offensive in it save for a few people, I understand that the dad was shocked to hear the remark out of the blue. He didn't say he was hiding it from his daughter, he said it just never came up. He was waiting for an opportune time to sit down and have a talk about her being adopted.

That's why it probably came to such an offensive shock, because now they're going to have to tackle the issue right away since shes heard that, rather than wait for whatever time they might have felt appropriate.
Finally someone who agrees with me.

Most of the gamers on this site are a bunch of knee-jerkers who are too busy being outraged that they can't even attempt to see (or, more likely, outright refuse to see) the opposing parties' point-of-view.

Gee, when I put it like that, gamers seem just as bad as the people they're raging against. Significantly worse, if you consider that most arguments here boils down to "you're not a gamer, shut up."

HAHAHA "when I put it like that"!!!

Yeah when you put it like lies anything can seem like anything!

Just like a insult about being fat and dumb and thus unloved and undeserving of love is some how offensive to someone with two parents who love them...

Oh here's a shock, what if she is fat, but her parents were waiting to talk to her about her fatness until it came up, but then the whole "Santa" thing came up and now they are outraged that a fat old man would force them to talk to their kid!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHH Someone alert the press! ! Interview Jesus, how could he allow a fat old man to take over his day!!!
Wow, you replied to my post with a whole bunch of single minded reactionary bullshit! I completely take back everything I said about gamers being worse than anti-gamers. clearly we are the more level-headed and polite of the two groups.

I was going to stand fast on my opinion, but it was the way you wrote "AHAHAHAHA" and used multiple exclamation points that convinced me that you're a super mature individual.

Hmmm, seems like you don't know what "single minded reactionary bullshit" would actually mean. I sure as heck have no idea how anything I said had anything to do with any of those four words.

Well assuming you meant "single-minded", which I think you meant to mean, not seeing other peoples points of view, I absolutely was not that. I put myself in the mind of a fat dumb parentless person, as well as a foolish parent who is mad their fat kid is as fat as santa. If you really meant "single minded" like you said, meaning only using one mind, I guess you got me there.

Now "reactionary" I also assume you meant I had an overreaction, which I completely did not. My response was of the same tone and tenor as your comment and much more level then your profanity laden overreaction.

And you only call it "bullshit" because you have no substantive rebuttal so you name call.

I could continue to pwn you, but you know the old saying about arguing with idiots ! :D
Noo... no. What you posted was some unrelated crap about fat people. Completely irrelevant to my "people here are over sensitive when it comes to someone saying something bad about videogames".

But clearly nothing I say will convince you that you are anything but completely and totally right in every way, so enjoy the orgasm you undoubtedly experienced as you "pwned" me. Well done
I think you're over sensitive to gamers outraging about games.

If you read this entire thread almost no one is worried about them using Portal as a sounding board. It's dismissed outright as the nonsense it is. So instead of contributing to the conversation you troll everyone who says that this semi lobotomized parent is a fucking idiot.

Let it go.

seriously??? what do you expect then? do you want companies to publish every little thing that poeple might find insulting in their game manuals or something??? Its called a joke... you know those things that some people find funny but others don't??? those things that are entirely opinionated?

Heck while we are at it maybe we should watch every film ever and look for anything that a single person anywhere could find offensive... hmm... OH and what about books.... hmm... lets see yeah i can think of a few of both that someone somewhere might find offense with some of the content.

see if people don't stop being so sensitive we are going to end up with no books, films, or games heck probably no history either cause heck someone might find it offensive...

Also you do realise that there is a very good chance that the child knows shes adopted, chances are she doesn't care because she has a family that loves her and thats all she will ever need.
Uhh... did I say anything about me agreeing with the OT? In fact, I completely disagree. But I wasn't even talking about just tia particular incident.

Go look at the first dozen comments, go on. I bet a dollar to donuts that 90 percent of those were sarcastic comments along the lines of "everybody has to be super sensetive always", or just outright insults at the guy who DARED question a game, no matter how small the quibble.

Now, go through the news posts and look for any articles of a similar nature. I'll wait...

... Did you notice a certain pattern there? Because I did.

Listen, if someone disagrees with someone else's opinion, I have no problem woth them presenting a counter argument, but insults and sarcasm are not arguments, and in fact it makes everyone here look like the worst stereotype of gamers that the media perpetuate.

Why do people get blown up about stuff like this, even though it has nothing to do with them they get all angry and self righteous about it.

Also offensive to idiots and fat children. Surely the "the parents you are calling do not love you" bit would be the one you would choose? Right?

I thought that the entire idea of the adopted and fat jokes in Portal 2 was for the irony. You know, GLaDOS so desperately searching for a way to insult you that she has to resort to jokes about you being adopted. Hell, it's even pointed out when
Potato GLaDOS insults Wheatley for saying the same thing.
Exactly, GLaDOS' insults and remarks always came from a lack of understanding of humans. The whole cake as a motivator thing is a good example of that; it's funny because she legitimately thought it was a good motivator to finish deadly tests, since humans like cake. But then that quote was taken out of context too and made completely unfunny.

I think it's just people who play portal have no idea what context means.

I personally can't see any 'right' and 'appropriate' time to break that kind of subject with any adopted child. Pretty silly complaint, especially when viewed in context.

1. If you feel it's that big a deal, you should have already talked to her about it. She's about to go into middle school, man. You think other kids aren't going to notice and say something? You allowed the world to beat you to the punch.

2. If you allow things like this to make a huge deal out of adoption, and in response you make a big deal out of adoption, you are only sending the message that the fact that she's adopted is a big deal.

3. This isn't about her. It's about you wanting to bring attention to what you've done. Yeah, we get it--you adopted a Chinese girl, most likely through your church, as it was a trend sweeping NC churches six or seven years ago. Oh, you're so caring and great, and all those poor schmucks that had natural kids just aren't as socially conscious as you, yadda yadda. It's a great thing that you've done, but it really doesn't require any further recognition than your own.

Please note that just because someone is adopted that it doesn't make him/her an orphan. If we're talking about touchy subjects, we might as well make it right.

"this semi lobotomised parent is a fucking idiot"

That's exactly what I'm talking about. How can we as gamers ever hope to be thought of as mature if the collective continue to spout dross like that?

And dont you DARE suggest that nobody wants gaming to be thought of as "mature". The exact reason all you people are so to on arms about news articles like this is because you want games to no longer be lumped in with "toys for children".

The next time a game character uses the word "bastard" I'm going to write to my local newspaper how offensive that is to people like me who were conceived out of wedlock.

These people are really really pathetic...

Hmmm...it would appear that his complaint wasn't that it was offensive, rather that it was too offensive for a game rated "E". That's fair enough, I guess, and not the same as simply chanting "think of the children".
Well it wasn't like he said his daughter was playing by herself she was supervised(sort of voiding part of that concern)Now I'd say if a kid could wrap their head around how to use portals to get that far into the game then a little shot at being adopted wouldn't effect them(which the other topic on here seems to say didn't actually up set heronly the dad who's overprotective I guess.)Unless that was a fairly resent event for them then it wouldn't be a issue not being under rated as E so much as bad timing.

Edit: I guess he should avoid watching "Easy A" anytime soon:
[sub]A white couple have a daughter themselves and then adopt a male black child who claims to know he's adopted before they were ready to tell him.[/sub]

I'm guessing this man would be considerably less offended if he didn't think he could make any money or get an incredibly pathetic 10 minutes of fame from selling the story.

Edit - I also think that the child did not care about the joke. More likely the father heard it and got little dollar signs in his eyes.

Do names of swords count? Wild Arms & Demon's Souls fit the bill then.

Why is everyone under the erroneous impression that the United States of America invented stupidity?
Because we capitalized on it?

On one hand, people let mere words get to them once again, but as a man with kevlar skin might not feel being stabbed is a big deal, I lack the perspective of someone who finds words I disagree with hurtful, (ROCKS felt much worse and even then I got over it) so anything I could say would probably be one-sided.

On the other hand, they gave an orphan a chance rather than producing their own spawn. That was nice of them.
