As a somewhat flabby 16 year old diabetic, I feel that I could probably do with getting in shape. I want to loose fat while gain muscle in order to just be a bit more healthy.

However, I am at a loss as to how I should go about this. I don't have enough money to go to a gym, and I'd prefer to do things in private rather than public.

If any of you could give me tips on how to go about things, I'd greatly appreciate it.

P.S. It's gone midnight here and I'm not really a night person, so sorry for this less than stellar post.

If you don't have enough money to go to the gym then you probably don't have enough to buy a used exercise bike. Thats what i did. I started eating more rice to reduce my calorie intake, and i bought an exercise bike. Most of your upper body can be toned with just a pair of weights, and a bike takes care of your lower body. Abs aside...

just get away from the computer and make yourself do 20 sit ups for every hour of inactivity a day. then do some press ups too.

There are a lot of videos on youtube for you to have a look at if you want to get in shape, although many of them are fairly area specific. If you want to do some stuff at home, just buy a set of free weights and a mat (I got all that for >£20) so that you don't get carpet burn from sit-ups and the like and you are pretty much set. The hardest thing is sticking to it.

Eat more, seriously, only make sure what you eat is low in carbs. Like veggies and fruit and lean meats if you can handle it. Eating more will speed up your metabolism, and if it's healthy food you won't have to worry about the negative affects like gaining weight.

Start walking and jogging.

I guarantee if you did those 2 things you would lose weight fast.

Oh and completely cut sugar from your diet....completely.

If you had stairs you could just walk up and down those, there are plenty of ways that people can lose weight with out equipment, but for some its just not fun enough to do regularly and you need to find something you know you will enjoy doing every day.

Say hello to your new best friend: Stairs.

How do you get around? By car or bike? If you ride a bike you could try and walk to where ever you're going, instead. Your best bet is to work it in into your daily routine.

Along with the other fine recommendations, I would recommend trying a martial art, they help to build muscle, but not in that horrible uber-macho look at all my muscles way.

I'm training for boot at the moment and I started out light doing a mile a day and some other light exercises. I'm up to 3 miles a day going on 5 next week.

You can buy yourself a bag of whey protein mix for fairly cheap. Just mix it with milk (preferably) or water and chug it after a long workout routine. Don't eat anything prior to working out.

for you, start off jogging maybe a half a mile to a mile a day, do some push ups/sit ups, jumpng jacks. Don't forget to stretch prior to a jog/walk.

work yourself up to more intensive work as well. Don't overdo yourself starting out. increase your workout load every week or so.

and get a cheap 1gig MP3 player. It helps a lot.

diet will help better than exercise. Sad to say, the best things to give up are cheese and potatoes. Doing that and ensuring that your saturated fat intake is low to tolerable will do alot towards shedding the pounds. I've lost 60 lbs in six weeks by sticking to this plan.

I started to go for long walks around my town a couple of months ago, it can usually take up towards 30-40 minutes depending on the route I choose to take. I find it quite relaxing to just go out for a walk, as my town is fairly quiet. Also I can feel the difference it is making, which is a plus.

Also try what everyone else has previously posted.

Put on a movie every night and jog on the spot while you watch it. If you get tired of jogging do some squats or sit ups or whatever.

Something else I do, when gaming, whenever there is a load screen I quickly grab my dumbbells and do a quick set of lifts.

And don't diet! If you're hungry eat, try and eat healthy but don't go overboard, if you can eat what you like then do that.

Being diabetic when excercising make sure your blood sugars are alright before starting out, or you have some sugar to hand. I've gone for a bike ride before and had them crash on me about 5 miles from home with no phone or lucozade etc, that was fun...

The only exercise that will help you actually lose weight is walking. More strenuous exercises actually switch on your body's automatic emergency "fight or flight" response and part of that response is that your body stores fat. This is the reason why some people do aerobics every day and just can't lose weight. They're actually exercising too hard. Their body is in a panic, thinking that a dire emercency is happening, so it's storing fat like mad. Get used to walking small distances instead of using the car. Walk minimum 20 mins a day but the more the better. And don't run. You'll also save money on car trips.

Gym and strength training doesn't lose weight but what it can do is convert your existing weight from fat to muscle. That might be a good thing but it's more important to lose weight than to be muscly. A lot of really muscly people are actually really unfit and some have major health problems. It's good to do but it's not a substitute for walking.

The other piece of the puzzle is diet. If you're a diabetic you'll already know the importance of eating well. Try and stay away from soft drinks, especially that energy drink fucking crap which is pure poison. The best thing to drink if you're thirsty is water. Also try and keep away from any sort of fast food (hamburgers, takeaway-style pizza etc) or processed snack food (potato chips, cookies), I wouldn't be eating that stuff more than once a month. If you eat a lot of chocolate only buy expensive high-quality brands so your budget forces you to eat less of it. Try to eat less red meat, avoid big-ass steaks and stuff. Carbs are okay, eat as much of them as you want but not more than one type per meal, i.e eat all the pasta you want but don't eat bread with it. Or eat tons of potato but don't also have rice at the same time. Eat as much fruit and green veg as you want. Eat something green and vegetabley each day. Don't put salt on food. Good luck.

Rather than having a snack, drink a large glass of water. Now, I'm not saying don't eat, just don't snack too often. Eat as healthy as you can.
Also to get muscle, try sit-ups, push-ups, jogging around your house or around a room, and if you can, find two heavy objects that are about equally the same weight and use them as barbels.
Good luck

do what i did, exercise at home. didn't change my diet at all, and lost a stone in four months!

3 days a week, stomach, legs, upperbody one section a day and changed intensity/exercises every three weeks. i.e. monday, sit ups, crunches leg lifts. tuesday squats, lunges and ankle lifts, etc. 5-4 sets of 10-20 depending on how long you've been doing it for and how cool you are.

hope i helped, don't need all this dieting and gym bull-honkey ;)
