Your evidence, where is it? I'm going to say your 'evidence' is probably your insecurity about how society doesn't like people like you so you want to pretend we're all like you.

You'd be incorrect around 60% of men and women cheat in their relationships. The faithful are definitely the minority for men and women. If society didn't like cheaters there wouldn't be so many of them around.

Mortai Gravesend said:
No, it really isn't. Evidence: I'm a guy. Looks like the problem is you.
You're an anomaly not in anyway a good representation of the average male. I can tell by how emotional you're getting over a forum post that you have inclinations towards effeminacy.

(Although, it can be argued you are the norm in this particular domain)

Lol? Load of crap. Quite irrelevant what we naturally are. We're not particularly predisposed to it just because it isn't built in to be monogamous. In the end, you're probably just trying to justify yourself.
http://www.drozfans.com/dr-ozs-advice/dr-oz-the-science-of-why-men-cheat/

Humans are not designed to be monogamous, particularly males. Covering your ears and screaming really loudly is not going to change the validity of my statements. A simple google search will confirm everything I've stated.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's not true!

I'm insulted that I've been branded a cheater by some skank I've never met. What the hell.

I've never cheated and never plan to or be party to cheating. The only time I've been 'cheated' on was when my last girlfriend drunkenly (so she said) got her bi on and made out with another girl. I didn't care though, because hey, hot.

bullshit, Everyone has urges sometimes but we are not monkey´s so we can choose to ignore them.

Some people choose not to, But everyone can.

And I´m pretty sure men and women are not different in this regard

Basically everyone in the thread parroted the social meme that "cheating is bad".

All men before being socially harangued into feeling that their inclinations towards promiscuity are "bad" cheat.

Your friend is right, just because a guy cheats doesn't mean he doesn't have feelings for whoever his main is at the moment, it's just a part of being a guy.

Saying otherwise is just bs.

Is anyone naturally monogamous? NO. Therefore everyone is predisposed to cheating. Social conditioning can change the feelings towards cheating but not the propensity for it.

Excusing terrible behavior because it's "natural" is essentially saying "I lack the willpower to control even the basest of urges."

There's a lot of things that we are hard wired to do that we pretty much decided to stop doing because doing so benefits our society as a whole and our social rules are what define us as a society and allows our civilization to thrive.

For example, we reach sexual maturity at an average age of 12. Biologically most girls are capable of conception and birth at that age meaning they should be "fair game" by the standards of our natural instinct toward procreation. But we still got together and decided that fucking kids is universally god awful and that anyone who does it should be rightfully punished.

I don't see how the age of sexual maturity has anything to do with cheating.

Just because a woman reaches reproductive age does not mean a male will be attracted to her. The supposition you're making is a bit ridiculous.

It seems to me that you're trying to conflate cheating with pedophilia.

Is cheating the same as pedophilia? No, of course not and I'm not trying to say that it is. I'm simply using it as an example, albeit an extreme one, of the necessity for social laws or rules of etiquette and conduct to take priority over the behaviors that one could argue are natural drives.

I've always been a big fan of monogamy.
Generally I'm not even prudish at all, I'm morally OK with homosexuality, poligamy, or even incest (among consenting adults using protection), but only in committed long term relationships that are intended to be permanent.

All that casual sex, and cheating, and fuck buddies, and prostitution, and all that really, really irks me.

I'm going to have to disagree here too.
My ex and I were together for four years and I never cheated once.
She, on the other hand, did. That's why she's my ex.

Aha ha ha ha ha ha ha... Dr. Oz.

Wow, that article said Vasopressin was a gene. A gene.

Before you take something Dr. Oz says seriously... ever... maybe you could look up the REAL rates. From real studies. Not fans of a guy on television.

The largest number I could find from a reputable source was between 30% and 60% of people have cheated at least once in a relationship.

That's a huge range, which basically says "no accurate measurement available," though you could construe from the 20%ish of young men who admit to cheating and the 15%ish of young women who admit to cheating that it's probably less than 50% of people who cheat.

Don't ever quote Dr. Oz's fans ever again as evidence for anything. Might double for Dr. Oz most of the time, as his advice has gone pretty wacko over the last few years.

That was just the most convenient source. There are plenty others that confirm the 60% number.

Google Scholar will work better if you're really interested in confirming my previous statement.

Were you ever presented the opportunity to cheat? For cheating to be possible a person has to have options.

So you're for incest but against cheating? That's an interesting stance. Permanent relationship sounds good in theory but it assumes no growth or progress between either of the people involved forever.

I'd have to disagree on casual sex and cheating. However, I do agree with the prostitution thing. If someone can't attract a person of the opposite sex maybe they don't deserve sex. Prostitution is cruel since the prostitute has to sleep with an undesirable.

Oh and I had a look at that website you were so eager to hide behind. Real hard science there... Some guy said that 50% of men cheat in relationships... oh well now I'm convinced. Yeah... if you think someone is cheating, they obviously are. It couldn't possibly be the person being paranoid or crazy.

Oh oh! And if you confront a man with cheating and they use the word "lying" it means they probably are lying! OH MY GOD, THE SCIENCE IS ROCK SOLID!!! Oh, and if he uses the word never, it means he is cheating as well. Thank you! I haven't laughed this hard and something this stupid in a long time.

You do realize that just because someone calls it 'science' doesn't mean it actually is science right?

I mean seriously, you just linked a website of a guy calling himself Dr. Oz.

It claims to be able to decipher human DNA and figure out exactly which genes predispose us towards a behaviour as complex as cheating.

It gives percentage after percentage without any form of source or supporting material.

I'm not entirely certain whether to laugh at this article or shake my head in disappointment for the misuse of the word science.

The only thing more hilarious than your link is your statement that humans were not designed to be monogamous. Which is utterly meaningless as there's no evidence whatsoever that humans were designed at all.

Incorrect, the number of murderers is actually pretty low. Although I can't really see how you can equivocate murder to cheating.

I certainly didn't equivocate murder to cheating. The fact that you can is somewhat disturbing.

To clarify for you. I think murder is wrong I'm against it, I think cheating is okay.

That's really sad and now I feel sad.

I told my girlfriend that I sometimes still have flashes of a girl I was seeing before her and she stayed with me too. Then eventually I realised how incredible she was for not running for the hills and fell in love with her.

So, it's not so bad, some guys can be changed, I guess, some guys are just idiots.

Or maybe I'm the idiot, ramble, ramble.
I don't reckon that's so bad, it's hard to lose all of your feelings for someone you used to love even years later, but it's not nice to hear your partner admit it.

It wouldn't have been too bad if that's all it was, but he was simpering after her like a lost puppy when she was around (luckily wasn't often because she went to uni out of town) and once straight up tried to get her to come home with him WHILE I WAS STANDING RIGHT THERE.
In the end I feel worse for him to be so hung up on this girl who's been rejecting him for seven years (so much that he neglected his long term girlfriend who was all ready to move in with him and move across countries with him ramble ramble...)

Moonlight Butterfly said:
I fall for bad guys because I think every guy is just waiting to lose his temper and hit me. So I may as well be with a guy that lets me see it coming. It's subconscious but at least I am aware of it now.
I completely get that too, to an extent. No idea where it comes from, but I'm inexplicably attracted to angry, temperamental young men. The guy I'm after at the moment, none of my friends like him because once he rage-punched my friend in the arm just for making a stupid joke about his name. (He doesn't do that kind of thing THAT often, though, honest...)
Thinking about it, he fits into my nice-people-still-have-the-capacity-to-cheat example, if you count kissing as cheating. He got a chance with a girl he'd loved for a while, felt terribly guilty, broke up with his girlfriend straight after, didn't touch the other girl again and now hates the song that was playing at the time he did it.
So, angry, violent, arguably a cheater, generally embarrassing to take out in public, but a nice guy!

... what am I getting myself into? >_>

If your girlfriend/boyfriend/wife/husband/sex robot/other offered you a 'hall pass' IE; a chance to go sleep with someone else without her/him/it having a problem with it - would you take that chance or would you prefer not to?
My first boyfriend gave me a free pass with girls (where I'm bi) but I completely wasn't interested, it seemed far too seedy.

In fact, once I was in an open relationship kind of deal with a guy I was deeply in love with but he didn't love me, and I turned down some offers from pretty guys, even though my partner was getting off with girls when he could. I guess if I really love someone, I just have no desire to be with anyone else.

Also, I feel like this whole post has just revealed the rather detrimental nature of my love life...

I think that the point was that if it was pure baser instincts driving us to seek out more partners to spread our genes, then those pure baser instincts would also drive us to go for those who are of child producing ages as well.
How are you drawing the conclusion 12 year old = most desirable mate?

Just because a woman reaches maturity doesn't mean men are going to start pursuing her exactly as she reaches that point.

FelixG said:
If you are arguing for pure basic instincts he could have just as easily gone with killing, as a large number of us know a few people who we would gladly be rid of if it could be done, but resist because of our ability to control our base urges.
I'm not arguing for "pure basic instincts" I'm just saying that cheating is normal and relatively harmless.

Also not everyone has the propensity or ability to kill. If you're frequenting this forum I'm pretty sure no matter how much you dislike someone you'd be incapable of killing them. Lets be real here.

FelixG said:
Also what you and he are describing is Ephebophilia, pedophilia is attraction to prepubescent individuals, not post-pubescent which is what he described.
In America what he described would be considered pedophilia. Pedophilia in the United States and throughout most of the western world is engaging in sexual activities with someone who is under the legal age of consent. Since this is a forum frequented by people who are from western societies I used the framework in my response.

Pedophilia would still be correct, thanks for the suggestion though.
