Plenty of prequels are around that are better than or as good as the films/games/books/etc. that they are the prequels of. Read through the thread and you'll see all the examples I've been ninja'd to and now am too lazy to steal...

I enjoyed Tremors 4. Sure, it was not better than the original, but it was still a good movie.

...okay maybe not that good of a movie, quality wise, but for some reason I love all Tremors movies. So, if it was enjoyable, it was good.
Thank god, someone else out there like me.

As for the topic, I think a lot of people will agree that Castlevania 3 was better than Castlevania 1. In fact, I thought Castlevania Lament of Innocence was one of the best, though I know a far lower number of people will agree with me on that.

Tales of Symphonia is a prequel to Phantasia and The magians nephew wasn't a horrible prequel to the Narnia series.

Its not a prequel it was written first
Yes it is. Bilbo finds the ring in Hobit. It's a prequel.
Wrong. Two posts above you I proved this to you. The Hobbit was published in 37. The Lord of the Rings was published in the 50's. A prequel is only a prequel if it comes before a writing that has already been published. You can't start off with a prequel.
Well the story in Hobbit takes place when Bilbo is about the same age as Frodo so from my point of view hobbit is a prequel and it doesn't matter if it was written first or last. I look at the time period that the book is set in not the actual order of writing (because that would wreak havoc on some of the books I read).
... but, sorry, you're still wrong. But I CAN however, see your logic/reasoning. But that doesn't change how you're wrong.

They're two very different, but very good novels.

The Lord of The Rings is more of an epic tale of high fantasy, whereas the Hobbit is more like a great big, light-hearted adventure.

I love them both equally though.
I only mentioned The Fellowship of the Ring. Overall, the whole trilogy (I'm calling it that, although true Tolkienists would say that it's all one big book) is more epic and overall just better than The Hobbit.
In other words, The Two Towers and The Return of The King were better than The Hobbit, which was in turn better than The Fellowship of The Ring, due to its strange pacing and sometimes dull dialogue (that said, if I were to rate Fellowship, I'd definitely give it at least a 9)
I like the Fellowship more than the others strangely, mostly the part with just the hobbits and strider.

As was said before, MGS3 and DMC3.

Underworld 3 was the best Underworld in my opinion.
The Scorpion King was less awful than The Mummy.
The new Star Trek movie is my favourite.
San Andreas in technically a prequel to GTA III, and it was better.
Fatal Frame II was better than I, but not as good as III.
the hobbit kicked soo much ass

Let's not get over angry at the OP, let's remember that there have been some terrible, terrible prequels, notably a recent trend in slasher films where we get to learn why the villain is like he is. That's not the point, dammit!

Technically Escape from Butcer Bay is a prequel to the Riddick mythos, and that was a cult classic. But keeping it strictly gaming: MGS 3 is phenomnenal, Devil May Cry 3 will certainly kick your ass, but it's undeniably a great game.

Yoshi's Island is a prequel to the entire Mario series. It's also one of the 3 best Mario games ever.

As stated above: Devil May Cry 3, God of War.

Also, Crisis Core. It's not better than the actual FF7, but it's a prequel to some other crapload that Squenix have been bringing us, and it's better than that. Not that it's an impressive feat.
