Wasn't it an Activision CEO who said the PS3 has to lower its own price in these hard economic times? Way to go hero.
Yes it was actually. Wow I completely forgot about that in my previous rage posting. Now I'm angry that they're not only ass holes, but hypocritical ass holes too!

So basically, we shouldn't buy it if we want game prices to stay the same. Problem is, people will buy so le sigh

ha yargh for once me stealing a game will be justified hell in case you haven't realized by not accepting the price you can make them regret the price increase and not try it again

Well this would be a good time to buy it for the pc. Although activision is charging these absurd prices, if anyone looks at game.co.uk they are offering the pc version for 35 quid on preorder, so i say get it for the pc and support British game retailers!

EDIT: http://www.game.co.uk/PC/Action/FirstPersonShooter/~r339836/Modern-Warfare-2/

go support these guys for giving you a decent price!

Edit#2, I am not associated with game or trying to advertise for them etc, i just think that they should be noted for not bowing to absurd activision pricing strategies

let's say this works and activision starts selling games for $90. now, what happens when development costs continue to increase, sales remain constant, and activision's profit margins start decreasing? if they keep raising prices, at some point people will stop buying in droves. by hiking prices this quickly, all they're doing is running out the clock that much faster.

this lack of foresight is exactly what got us into the economic crisis, and if this keeps up, eventually the console market will crash again. reducing development costs is the only feasible, long-term survival strategy.

Raise the prices and piracy will go up. It's almost sure to happen.

Of course, Activision is too busy smoking hundred dollar bills to care.

How come it 'only' costs me £4.50 to go to the movies when costs are similar/more than games?

And oh, First post, despite using this site for ages, yay.

because you only see the movie once and they only have to keep you entertained for 2 hours, where as a game generally has to be about 10 hours long and takes a lot longer to make because of that hence rising costs so they expect you to pay more, which is fair enough except activision are just being greedy!

Your average Hollywood movie costs more to make then Call of Duty, and I'm just wondering what the turnover is on your average Activison game. Just because it offers more doesn't justify it's 8x higher cost.

I'm just going to side with Activision for a little bit...

But what if everyone buys it regardless of price and then companies realize good games are worth investing in?

Lots of companies are churning out games to make a quick buck, but if they see the success of Modern Warfare, wouldn't that motivate them to change their habits?

Plus this would literally draw the line between first rate triple A titles compared to anything else.

But I actually won't be buying it. Unless it actually explodes your TV from being awesome, of course. I'm just saying I have enough of FPSs for awhile.

Well you know, the analyst said this isn't completely unjustified. Development costs for games are increasing as we keep demanding higher quality games. It's only natural that we would have to pay more for the finished project. We can't really judge if Modern Warfare 2 is worth this price until we actually play the game.

But you know, let's ***** and moan about having to pay more instead. That's much easier.
You know what? I was going to type the exact same thing until I ran across your post there.

That was exactly what I was going to say. Seriously.

Internet Kraken said:
Can someone explain to me why a price increase justifies pirating? If it costs to much, then wait until it costs less. It's not that hard.
It doesn't. You don't see people running around stealing barrels of gas because the price went up: you see them making smarter, more conservative choices about travel.

The same thing needs to happen with the games market. The price of games tends to drop around $10 at a time: so just wait till the price fits your needs.

Oh wait. I forgot that people WANT THIS NOW and that somehow justifies theft. My bad.

I wouldn't support that move had it pushed it way over here, that's total crap. Valve has the right idea with steam with free play weekends and big price breaks.

Modern Warfare 2 will look exactly the same as Modern Warfare. Its the same engine, its got a new and highly scripted single player campaign and the multiplayer is essentially the same. Where exactly are these hidden increases in development costs Activision?

If anything going off this formula should be decreasing costs.

This whole thing is about greed. Activision wants the ps3 price drop to increase market share so they can sell as many games on as many platforms as possible. Now they want to test a market and see if they can jack up the price and still have high sales.

This will probably be successful even with piracy slashing sales with a flaming sword. So, I say to everyone without a key generator, wait 'til the price drops significantly, or buy it used. I just got Modern Warfare 1 and Prey for $30 total on ebay. Save your money and be patient.

Also, its a sad fact of modern corporate business, the big wigs who make a few important decisions but do nothing else get millions of moola while the artisans get barely anything from the sales. I won't pirate it because the developers are working hard on it (and probably making an awesome game), but I sure as hell wont turn in or look down on anyone who pirates any game, movie, or song.

Agreed, as the gaming world has been expanding to the media coloseus it is today, and the revenue it brings in annually, I'd have to say sustainability/development costs on tools such be a primary concern for all retail developers. It's a totally inappropriate move when they believe loyal fanbases are nothing more than wallets, and gullible for that matter.

No, Activision won't see a penny from me again until they get off their fucking pedestal and realise they can't toy with people like that.

Alright then, I definately won't be buying this... I don't care how good it is, a stand MUST be taken somewhere or they'll keep gouging us.
Agreed. Unfortunately, while most of the escapists here will agree with you, the impatient generation will not. This is what annoys me most about this price-hike. It's not just that Activision is making even more of an ass of itself, it's going to pull this off. People will pay the extra 10 squid for this game, and odds are that many more publishers will jump on the bandwagon.

I hope I'm just being overly pessimistic though.

Well that's shady business, but you only have yourselves to blame if you pay the 60 pounds.

My advice? Take your $90, and go find 4 good old games you missed out on. Here's some suggestions, Assassin's Creed, Supreme Commander, HAWX, BioShock, Two Thrones, The Orange Box, FarCry Instincts: Predator, and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. All of which you can find for less than $20 New. And these games aren't any less fun because they're old. Hell, even if you're skeptical whether or not you'll like it, what have you got to lose? $10 if you sell it back? Who knows, you might even find a new favorite genre.

This is absolutely unacceptable, I can only hope the Brits will rise up and stand against the awakening moster that is Activision, lest we have to deal with a second EA of yesteryear...
