Well mine's quite short, but it doesn't loop and the camera moves. I'm not changing it though I've had it for years, and it the only recognition I get around here (except for special occasions).

I tend to prefer simple looping avatars without many changing colours. I don't want it to be too distracting. I'll probably stick with this one for a while because the Carbot animations zergling is adorable.

I had to blink and go "whut" when you had Daystar Clarion's GIF as your example of a bad GIF. Seriously? Evoking one of the best PS2 games with a simple, clear, well animated GIF is wrong to you? Fair enough, to each their own. For me I love that GIF so stick me in the wrong club.

Edit: Really, what you should ask yourself first is; "Should this be animated?" Most animated avatars are animated for no real reason. You're just making an already slow site load slightly slower.
Unless being animated adds something other than being animated, don't do it.
The image moving doesn't add anything. You could achieve the same effect with a still image.

My avatar fits most of the rules, hurray.
Then again, your example for a "good" gif-avatar is one that I, personally, dislike very much. I would take the Daystar .gif over that every time
