I usually just use a YouTube gif maker, and it works like a charm. However, Pinkamena made my current one a while back, and I just asked to resize and use it, so any complaints can go to him (her? I can never tell through the internet).

EDIT: Looking at my own avatar I don't even know if it fits within your rules. I guess it does - you couldn't know Squirtle is laughing without animation.

A classic novice mistake made by many is that if you don't size it correctly, the system sizes it for you which strips the animation out. Make sure the gif you are using is of proper size:

Non-PubClub: 85x85
PubClub: 115x115

Now I am off to work but if you are still unable to get it to work after this and need some help, I can give it a look. Otherwise, there are plenty of people in here who could help as well (might I be so bold as to recommend Mr. Frappe as his skillz are more than sufficient for paying the billz).

Aww, and this is where I fail.

One of the reasons I chose this avatar was to see how long of an animation I could get away with.
As it stands, my avatar is 358 frames long, and takes about 35 seconds to loop all the way through.

Well, I think your avatar is awesome. And hypnotic. I'll sometimes stare at it for multiple loops.

Isn't it a bit pedantic to request specifications on this? I mean, not that the thread is bad or useless in anyway.

I honestly think you should've put a rule in about scaling.

Some animated avatars are horribly cropped/resized, and it really detracts from how lovely the avatar could be otherwise.

I basically never use animated avatars myself (I don't know how to make them, for a start), but I do enjoy looking at them.

Alright, this is a good a time as any. What picture is your avatar from? I tried both reverse image searching and a full battery of tags.

Most animated avatars are animated for no real reason. You're just making an already slow site load slightly slower.

Well, you know what the solution to that is, right?

OT: The only time I think an animated avatar looks like crap is when it really does look like crap. I enjoy seeing most of the animated avatars most people on the site have. I've only had one animated avatar myself, that being this:

Well I suppose mine don't particularly loop all that well, but there's some jumpy frames before the cut back anyway so it's all balanced out.

Also it's Kyary, and TopazFusion scaled them down for me. They're awesome no matter how bad the original gifs may be.

I reckon mine looks just fine the way it is now. I thought about having it loop back, but the quality took a dive when @Caramel (thanks again, by the way) tried having it loop back and forth. Besides, it tells an inspiring story, that we can all, one day, achieve the tower of hats in all of us.

I disagree with number 3, sometimes it's nearly impossible to get the desired effect with just a few frames. If it's a quick motion, like blinking, sure fine, but things like slow motion and particles take many many frames. Cherry blossoms fall very slowly, it would look absolutely messed up, unrealistic, and break a few of your other rules, if they fell quickly to fit your speed restrictions.

Also I like watching long, looping avatars, if it's a complex motion, they flow more fluidly.

I like animated avatars, I'm interested in making my own one day. Something nice and simple, like Headsprouter swooping into the frame from the left, then swooping back to the right.

However, a really cool one would be Headsprouter hanging in front of a computer, reaching down to try and type a response, resulting in him falling to the ground. That'd be awesome.

I, personally think an avatar is better animated than not. The okami one you showed is way cooler animated, I think, at least.

Well this thread seems rather antagonistic. If you're having a hard time loading the site you could just disable avatars in the settings can't you? Or was that feature removed?

Although ironically being able to animate fairly well for a amateur I don't desire an animated avatar myself. But I don't begrudge those who do. The Escapist isn't bogged down by it when I come here.
