Why is it hated so much?
Because, like everything else, 90% sucks. Thank you, Sturgeon's Law.
What is the ultimate anime?
Sailor Moon. Because if you were born in the 90s, it was your first anime. NO EXCEPTIONS.
What is the ultimate character?
Kamina from Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagann. Badass in every single way, and many of those ways made absolutely no sense.

I think the only anime that I could stand watching was Cowboy Bebop. Everything else just seems to silly and relatively boring.

1. People in America are afraid of cartoons that aren't made by Seth McFarlane.

2. One Piece

3. Monkey D. Luffy

Whoa whoa whoa now, I think in my personal opinion and constant experiences of both, Naruto is more sophisticated than Bleach, with a somewhat darker and sophisticated storyline in my opinion.

1. Because there is hate for anything. Especially things people aren't used for, in this case, in "the west".

2 and 3. There is no fucking "ultimate" anything. It's a fucking stupid question to ask and you should feel bad.
/thread

Actually, let me expand;

Anime is seen as cartoons in the west (that don't know of it), and cartoons link with Looney Tunes.

Fun, if you like anvils.
Anime are cartoons, anime is supposed to cover everything animated, at least for the Japanese.

P.S. Waltz with Bashir, Ichi the Killer, and a wealth of other adult anime would like a word with you on the kiddie part.

I love Bleach, but I despise Ichigo as a protagonist. He truly does seem to be fighting people for no reason, and doesn't have a likable personality at all.

Also 80% of mainstream anime have absolutely shocking dubbing, and people should avoid the majority of it like the plague (with the exception of Fullmetal Alchemist, Noir, etc.).

1. Because it seems really weird to some people and their first impression scares them off before they can get into it, which is why I forced my friend to watch Rurouni Kenshin and see how cool it really is.

2. Rurouni Kenshin, it's well written, has good action, and just gives me a good feeling when I watch it.

3. Kenshin Himura. He's a badass with a sword, but refuses to kill people with it because he understands the repercussions of his actions. Kind of reminds me of Big Boss or Solid Snake.

In case you can't tell, I really like Rurouni Kenshin, which is why I chose this avatar.

Also, could some people explain to me why the original Japanese version of Naruto is better? Is it because the English dub was toned down for kids? I didn't like the English dub and I want to know why I should like the original Japanese more. I had totally given up on the show a little while in, but now I'm curious.

1. In the US it gets a bad name because it's animated. And 95% of US animated shows are kids shows, and most of the rest are comedies like Family Guy and South Park. The idea of a serious animated adult show is difficult for most people to come to grips with. It's a culturally alien idea.
2. Personally, I'd say Bleach. I would say Naruto if I didn't hate so many characters (Naruto, Hinata, etc). If the show killed them off and never looked back, I'd probably throw it my vote.
3. I've only watched a few anime series so far (Death Note, Naruto, and Bleach), so my choices are limited. It's a toss-up between Ichigo from Bleach and Shikamaru from Naruto.

1: People can't understand different cultures perhaps?
2: Haven't seen many, but I'd have to go with Paranoia Agent, because its so incredibly deep and dark.
3: Naruto (Believe it) Ok, that was a joke. Probably Gantz from Gantz. It's Round, Black, and plays music. Not to mention has a hilarious scoring system.

Can't really say why there's so much hate, but I have been enjoying Ghost in a Shell (I know, I'm late to the party). Wonderful anime that makes you think about the direction that technology is progressing in.

Initial contact with the medium is primarily through butchered mainstream productions of minimal quality (ie. Naruto, Dragonball Z). There's also the possibility that they hit something that requires a bit more cultural knowledge to understand, such as some of the better comedies (ie. Azumanga Daioh).

what is the ultimate anime?
The one-two punch of Higurashi no naku Koro Ni and Higurashi no naku Koro Ni Kai; a slickly executed story about conspiracies and paranoia against a backdrop of unfettered brutality and psychological horror.

who is the ultimate anime character?
I'm actually not sure I can answer this. As much as I'm a fan of Alucard, he's a little too overpowered for my taste. I may have to go with Rika Furude from Higurashi if only for some of the things she did / went through.

I have never understood anime at all because it doesn't make sense you need to see every episode and you usually have to decypher the terribly written stories to fully understand it. The characters are weird because they are non-human or are a animal.

But I do have way too many friends who are into anime and I just don't get it.
The only every anime I sort of got interested in was Inyuasha* (if that's spelled right) I didn't think it was that bad, I mean at least it made some sense.....after using wikipedia.

Anime is just not for me I'll just stick to good old american comedy.

They sound like your standard sci-fi show when you describe them like that. The only difference being that anime is animated.

The characters act in inhuman, overacted ways. Most of it is for perverted young men that think a cartoon character covered in cum and that have their underwear showing is sexy. Unfunny randomness. Mad stories and worser voice acting.
Also, nearly all anime shows are riddled with tropes and clichés. Action girls, ridiculous comic relief characters, back-to-back badasses, one-hit sword duels, death speeches, the typical scenario where the man makes a lecherous comment and the woman (who always plays the straight man of any relationship) answers with violence, fanservice and mechas.

Anime is hated because it too out there for the average viewer. A guy I knew was overly excited about this show called Baki and insists on showing me. It turns out 9 year olds look like they are 30 year old body builders in Japan. That threw whatever fight scenes it could show me right down the drain. If it was shown on Adult Swim, I have probably seen it, but I don't consider myself a fan.

I wouldn't have the slighted idea what the ultimate anime is, but I did actually enjoy Cowboy Bebop. That was a well put together show. The excellent scoring, editing, and writing made up for the (my opinion) lackluster animation. I even got the movie with subtitles before it was released dubbed in America. Death Note was okay but had a shit ending.

I think it's hated so much because
A: Most anime is bad. Low quality. Especially dubbed, the voice acting is often cheesy and unrealistic. The stories can be even worse.
B: Usually, the people who like anime aren't...the most accepted people of society. Anime has a stigma around it that makes the people who like it seem even nerdier and geekier than before, and you usually don't see the "cool kids" talking about it or expressing interest, at least openly. At my school at least, the people who like anime openly are usually...different than the normal person.

Finally, there is the cultural difference, some people just don't or can't understand it in general.
what is the ultimate anime?
There is no "ultimate anime". What is the standard? How is it measured?
Someone can say one thing, and another can say something else. Their opinions will not change. There are some amazingly well-done animes, such as Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Code Geass. Out of all of these, Cowboy Bebop is generally accepted as one of the greatest animes ever created, but in the end, it is all up to the individual and his/her views.
who is the ultimate anime character?
Same thing as above, there would also need to be some sort of context.
Badass-wise, I would need to hand it to Alucard from the Hellsing anime.
One of my personal favorites is Lelouch Lamperouge, from Code Geass, I think he's just an amazing character.

But in the end, people usually like a realistic character, unlike, say, Ichigo, who is always growing stronger and is continually avoiding any bonds of realism. So, realism-wise, I would need to hand this to Spike, of Cowboy Bebop fame. He's realistic, he reflects true human emotion, succumbs to the same things we do, and in the end, is simply human.

Again, this all boils down to personal opinion, but nothing can ever be "the ultimate". A good ,one perhaps, is classified as great, but never "the ultimate".

A combination of misinformed opinion, bad experiences wrongly taken for the whole of the medium, and bandwagon riding.

what is the ultimate anime?
There is none. There are many great anime, but none of them have universal appeal.

who is the ultimate anime character?
There is none. There are many great anime characters, but there is no objective standard to measure them against one another.

Cultural xenophobia and all the hentai on Newgrounds is the most likely guess.

My favorite anime is Deathnote.

I am, *****.

Fanboys ruin it for the rest of us, people see them and get a bad image of anime.

Best one? This really depends on taste, but from what I've seen (which honestly has not been a lot) it would have to be death note until
L dies, his replacement was very meh compared to him
.

Best Character? I have no clue, like I said above its subject to personal opinion. Although I love the main guy from Tri-Gun. Great mix of badass hero + clumsy boof.

Because anime fans have two major stereotypes. The first being little kids who think anything from Japan is cool because they like ninja and samuri stories. The second being grown-ups or teen otakus who think anything from Japan is cool because, well, they think they are really Japanese born on the wrong side of the ocean. Both are incredibly annoying. In addition to stereotypes, there is also hentai, which is viewed as worse then Western pornography because of elements like rape and victims being minors, or pretty damn close. Actually, the age of consent is 13, I think, in Japan. That may explain it. When anyone not literate in anime hears about anime, they think porno.

Stereotypes and hentai cause plenty of prejudice towards anime and its fans, but there are also people who genuinly don't like it because they dislike the art style or the Japanese archtypes and conventions. Fine by me, but its the prejudice that gets me.

As for the other questions, I'll shut up because they turn on my inner fanboy.
Is that Joker from Read or Die as your Avatar? Boy was that character weird. Not that R.O.D. isn't weird enough already.

Personally I think Astro Boy's anime by Osamu Tezuka is the ultimate anime.
