I don't really like anime so I can't answer these properly. But I'll give contributing a shot;
Personally, I don't like anime just because each and every character seems to annoy me, they're either real happy or real grumpy. Maybe this'd change if I watched more of it, but so far it's just fueled my previous reason.
Maybe it's just because "Looney Tunes" and "Tom & Jerry" set the bar too high for me.

It's hated because what's cool in Japan, does not always constitute as cool in America. Same reason why the 360 doesn't sell well in Japan. Also, a lot of the fanbase is a bunch of obsessed fanboys and fangirls who while can be cool to hang around sometimes, they eventually get grating on your nerves. This coming from an anime fan.

The ultimate anime is the anime you match up with the most. It's a preference type of thing, just like video games, etc. But to recommend a few good (classic) ones would have to be:
FLCL
Cowboy Bebop
Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
and Akira

The ultimate character? A preference type of thign again. But my favorites tend to vary in anime. With Hellsing, it's Alucard, because he's the top dog and always so chill (while immensely deadly). In FLCL, it's Haruko, because she's just so wacky and reminds me of someone in my life who admire deeply.

Pffffft...yeah fucking right I'd even have a favorite character in that garbage. Really, I remember when it was a much better anime called Yu Yu Hakusho.

-Simple. The fanboys out in the world won't shut the fuck up about it, and hence, give those decent fans who watch it and discuss among themselves a bad name. I can't go a day without hearing at least one mother fucker saying, "Oh you gotta watch Naruto! So many hot girls." ITS A FUCKING CARTOON FROM JAPAN, hence I do not qualify the girls as hot, a term I reserved for flesh and blood. In addition, this mention of said anime makes me not want to watch it.

why is it hated so much? Someone here at work never watched an anime yet has the opinion its all porn and thinks its for fanboys. So maybe because some dont give it a chance. Also would recommend subbed instead of dubbed as the voice acting is horrible sometimes in the english versions

what is the ultimate anime? There isnt one. True some run longer and are more well known but its individual opinion. Everyone will answer differently as anime is no different to movies or tv series. All vary and liked by different people. I'd say one i've watched the most is One Piece, coz i'm a kid at heart and love the insane yet stupid characters and plots
