Hot off the press:

An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.

So, looks like something looked suspicious and they shut it down for good measure. Well, thats what I see. Or somebody poked PSN and well...damn it, I wanna get on.
I do believe that it isn't anonymous, it isn't their style to affect millions of consumers. Anonymous would take down the PlayStation website then PSN. So somehow, something isn't right in PSN land.

Or it could just be that the hamsters powering the Sony servers all died. There's that, too.

I loled.

Meanwhile, Microsoft looks for muscular, male athletes to power Xbox LIVE with their testosterone.

Sony never actually said it was anon, they said it could possibly be a third party. People aren't reading things properly it seems...
Or just a case of guilty conscience.

So it could be a splinter group responsible.
Probably a rogue cell >.>

OT: Well they did say they didn't want to ruin things for customers just to get back at sony...so they might be telling truth...or just lying through their teeth...both could be true.
perhaps a... Splinter Cell?

Honestly, I'll side with Anonymous here. They didn't do it. I think that Portal 2 caused the servers to crash.

Indeed, I believe that to be self-evident!

Anonymous or not, I'm sure someone, somewhere is doing it for the LOLZ.

Well you get what you pay for and the PSN is free so im suprised this dosen't happen more often.
My attitude, too. The reason I have a PS3 is because I refuse to pay for online gaming. Xbox Live went down all the time in the early days of 360, and that shit cost money. With the way some people are reacting, if I were Sony, I'd threaten to shut down the PSN permanently. Seriously, Sony doesn't owe anyone anything.

News posts about anonymous always bother me, they get it wrong. Its not a group, its a label anyone can use...

Well I'm pretty sure I recall them specifically saying they weren't going to shut down PSN, a few weeks ago. So I'm happy with thinking it wasn't them. But yeah, they have no official spokespeople or goals or anything, so it's pointless to argue whether it was anon or not ... I mean technically speaking, if it was an external attack and we don't know who did it, by definition it was done by anonymous :p

Also, Captcha what the fuck is this.

Exactly. Unless one of them left a present sitting on the PSN for unknown reasons and Sony found out about and are purging their system then Anonymous is not related to this at all.

The whole point of activism is to say "We did this because of such and such a reason". Anonymous did that with the Hotz message a few weeks ago and moved on. Attacking a second time is pointless because everyone knows the story now and things have cooled down besides.

Reading between the lines I feel there is something in the Network the engineers don't like, and they took the decision to deal with it straight away and take the flak for it now rather than take any chances security wise. Maybe they thought or hoped it would be a quick job and then realized that it would be more time consuming than they originally thought. Maybe the reason they won't give us any more information is that it is a highly technical issue with an unpredictable time frame. The fact they say how their top priority is to make us all happy with entertainment blah blah suggests that all our personal data is secure.

All in all annoying, but not worrying. The only concern is that if they haven't fixed it by Sunday evening then will they fix it by the following Sunday?
