Found this on Youtube, posted today. It doesn't look like the usual Anonymous message, so its very likely that it's some kid just taking credit for something he didn't do, but it looks like someone's claiming responsibility for the outage.

Or cleverly trying to push the blame toward Anonymous.

Anonymous is an organization that attacks data points for a purpose. If they didn't do it, I would believe them.

"oh, it's a splinter group, it's still them" argument = dumb.

Or it could just be that the hamsters powering the Sony servers all died. There's that, too.
This group of hackers has never given us reason NOT to take their word for it.
And I'm actually not being sarcastic.

On the other hand, Sony has given us plenty reason to think that they can't keep their shit together. That leap year fiasco (finally looked it up) WAS only a year ago. I guess we're due for their next great screwup.
They are a group of hackers playing bully on the internet doing extremely illegal things. Nobody's private information is safe to them. Why should we EVER take their word for it?
Because if it was anonymous (especially) they would've been gloating about it before anything even happened.
I dont buy it. Thats not good enough for me. Anon is made up of random people with their own ideals and no system of command. Any single agent could have taken it apon themselves to do the dirty deed at any time.
Sure it's possible but based on previous experience, I think that
A - we would've heard them take responsibility
B - Sony wouldn't have been so quick to backtrack on their "outside influence" excuse.

The most likely reason I see is Sony dropping the ball: something like this happens to psn every once in a while.

We all should be thankful for what we have and when stuff like this happens, just take a break, its not the end of the world. We are all pissed off because when we get something like psn for free, after awhile we automatically think they have to give it to us.
Not really. It is the lack of communication. If they said "We have discovered a critical error in the Playstation Network. We are working to solve this. Rest assured that all your personal information and details are safe and security has not been compromised. The problem should be resolved by 22 April 2011, and all online features should be back in working order. Apologies for the frustration and thank you for using PSN!." then we would accept it.

Instead they have basically said "The network is down for some reason and it may be down for a couple of days. Then again maybe it won't be, cheers."

edit: Maybe I am being a bit harsh on Sony. After all if they don't know what the problem is then they don't know! I guess they are trying their best to fix the problem and Japan is still a bit of a mess following the earthquake.
No I strongly Disagree.

I guess I could give Sony a message like this one.

You can't hold a network together forever with duct tape and bailing wire.
Hey I know this is a bit off topic, but can I use this for the quote of the day? It's for The Hot Topic Escapists user group.

OT: Sony should use lemmings instead. They'll work themselves to death :D

It's somebodys fault! I'm not beating Portal 2 offline. I need my simultaneous Steam achievements. I'd play my PC copy, but I need my trophies, too. Back to Majin, then.
So games are only worth playing for imaginary points nowadays? I'm saddened...
If you beat a boss in a game, don't you wanna feel like you did something? Achievements aren't there just to be there -- you can prove you did something if you have them.

OT: Yeah, I don't know much about Anonymous, but I think that Sony cocked up PSN somehow. C'mon, Sony! Repair it so I can get back to Portal 2! This is an outrage...Go f*ck yourself, Splinter of Anon.

This is only the beginning... Like Die Hard 4! (Or Live Free and Die Hard if you're a yank)
Screw that. I'm a "Yank", and it's still Die Hard 4. And he says "Yippee-kay-yay, ************", not "Yippee-kay-yay, mother*gunshot*".

OT: I'm not sure what to believe. I highly doubt one group on the outside could actually take down an entire network worldwide for days, and Sony has had their system crash before.

"While it could be the case that other Anons are acting by themselves," reads a statement [http://anonnews.org/?p=press&a=item&i=848] on the Anonymous news site, "AnonOps was not related to this incident and does not take responsibility for whatever has happened."
I'm guessing this. Anonymous isn't a single cohesive thing, it's a hydra and one can't be surprised when one of the heads decides it's going to pull in a different direction to that of the body.

This is why you can't think of Anonymous as an organization. It's just everyone. Some members of Anonymous aren't responsible. Others might be (unless it really is internal issues). Anonymous are not an organized group and we can't really refer to them as such.

I'm actually inclined to believe that AnonOps at least had nothing to do with it if they said so, they don't seem to avoid taking responsibility for what they've done, and maybe it was just some random Anon.
And about the facebook post, even though the second part is a bit incriminating, it could just be that after the network went down and they got blamed by someone for it, some Anon with posting ability took the opportunity to urge people to get off the games and make a minor defense against accusations. But I'm not an Anon so I don't really know.

a militant anti-hamster splinter faction of anon has killed all of sony's server hamsters. this is the only logical conclusion.

Exactly. Well, the attacks are obviously organized in some fashion, but the people doing them use the meme Anonymous as a label.

There can't be factions of Anonymous because Anonymous doesn't exist.

Wait a second... did Sony actually blame Anonymous or did we make that up? (I know I made it up)
They said it could be an outside attack. Assuming the spokesperson who said it was up to speed then that basically means anything is possible.

That means people running up and down corridors waving their arms about frantically trying to work out what the problem is. Maybe someone tripped on a cable and nobody realized the damage caused, maybe someone pressed the wrong button whilst having an affair in the office and is hiding in a shoe closet somewhere hoping that he somehow won't get fired, maybe an alien leader out there got pwned and ordered his minions to destroy the Network. We just don't know, it's hard to tell. A gang of thugs, a blackmailer, an angry husband, a gay lover...
Cookie for the Naked Gun reference.

Could be either one. I though Anon tried to attack before but Sony handled it nicely.

If it is an internal conflict inside anonymous (which the facebook post is pretty damning) then those little script kiddies will go pretty far in their attempts to escape the law won't they?

To think all this started with some idiot thinking it was OK to give pirates the keys to the PS3's room.

They didn't really have a purpose when they attacked PSN. Unless it was to piss people off who had no bearing on Sony or the court case. They even had to backpedal from the anger that could've been avoided if they'd taken the time to asses what their actions would mean. Sony isn't really hurt since its a free service and Plus content is still available.
