Fallout Equestria (MLP:FiM) is cocking huge, and I've read all of it and (mostly) loved it. That should tell you how amazing it is. But you probably won't like it if you haven't watched MLP, Fallout fans who don't like MLP or have watched it won't really enjoy it. You don't need to have played a Fallout game, but someone who has will be basking in all the references and allusions that show up.

Seam by Seam (Homestuck) is absolutely heartwrenching. Really, it's because I love the ship more than anything, but dear god were the emotions sad and pacing fantastic.

There's good and then there's good.

For instance, the Evangelion fanfic, "Nobody Dies", is hardly a testament to the Eva universe. It is, however, funny as goddamn hell, plus chips. I would recommend it just because it's nuts.

Lately I've been going though 1d4chan and I found a few that are pretty good, the last one I read was called love and the krieg and its pretty good. http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Love_and_Krieg
1d4Chan is much, much funnier than it has any rights to be.

Angry Marine fan fics ftw.

Good for WHAT exactly?

Because I have quite a few I have loved simply for their ability to comfort me on a lonely night...

Also, Cupcakes is great.

It's an interesting crossover of a story and I've been enjoying it thus far: The Queen Who Fell to Earth [http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7591040/1/The_bQueen_b_bwho_b_bfell_b_to_bEarth_b#]

It's Harry Potter crossed with Dragonriders of Pern. It's one of those fics that doesn't sound like it'd work but it does, much akin to Fallout:Equestria.
Dragonriders of Pern you say? I rather enjoyed those books, might have to take a peek at that.
Phew, this is a hard one, can't remember many that I've read, though I'll second FO:E and some of it's off shoots (from what I've read of Project Horizons, I'm actually liking it better)

Meh, can't remember any names, though I do remember reading this short lil fic about how "Twinkle" got its name (Drizzt) and it was hilarious. May not have been written well, but it was a fun read.

basically anything by Erico ( http://www.fanfiction.net/u/55667/ ) or Magus523 ( http://www.fanfiction.net/u/152431/ )is going to be very good by fan fiction standards although it bears mentioning that most of it will only appeal to you if you have an interest in Megaman, Metroid, or Starfox. That being said if you like any of those franchises these are some excellent stories that IMO are in many cases better then the almost nonexistent official stories from the games they are based on.

Does the "Powerpuff Girls Doujinshi" over at http://www.snafu-comics.com/ count? By extension there's also "Grim Tales from Down Below," the quality of the story lines are arguable though, with some really weird stuff going on, but unlike most fanfics at least there's quality art to help tell the story rather than amateurish writing.

Also on the site is "Naruto: Heroes Path," which I just like because I like seeing how the creator neatly imagined the futures of all the Naruto characters.

There used to be this amazing Naruto fan manga that was hosted on the Tokyopop website of all places (they had a section for fan works, but still it seems weird) that imitated Kishimoto's artsyle almost perfectly, and was sort of side story about a group of original characters but set at the same time as the actual manga (pre-time skip) It's lost in the ether now as far as I know since Tokyopop shut down their U.S. publishing branch, and website along with it. Maybe it's still out there but I forgot the name so kind of hard to Google.

Well I do a little bit of writing and while I'm far from perfect...ok enough ego stroking. Personally I like the Enemy of my Enemy, it's a Halo fanfic that details a shaky Human Elite alliance holding out against a massive Brute invasion on a barren desert planet.

If you like cross over Fanfics that aren't stupid look up Renegade, a what if that serves as a crossover between Command and Conquer and Mass Effect, it's really well done thus far.

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5851454/1/Renegade

If you want a good laugh try "Mock Effect" a parody of Mass Effect, really god damn funny.
haha that was awsome, I loved what they did with female/male shep

also...

"Sorry. But call me Jane. Just once in my life I?d like someone to address me by my first name" < thats actually kind of true :/

Mass Effect: Interregnum [http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5775707/1/Mass_Effect_Interregnum].

Can't recommend this enough to Mass Effect fans. It's brilliant.
Agreed 100% on this one, I am currently reading that now and it is excellent. If you love you some Garrus and wanted to see what he was doing to become Archangel check it out.

I have seen plenty of threads about god-awful fanfics (My Immortal, Cupcakes, Ebony and Ivory, etc.) but none about any of the good ones. Can we have a good fanfic thread?

Mine are:

Most PPC missions.
12/The Traveler
Fallout Equestria
Better Living Through Science and Ponies.
well if you saw lucky star and liked it (and seeing as how there's fallout equestria) I highly recomend fallen stars It's a good cross-over involving fallout 3 and lucky star

Google 'Divine Judgement Malal' and you should find this warhammer 40k fanfic that is just awesome. Its about a chaos marine who serves a Chaos god that was retconned out of existence due to copyright issues. Malal lives on though in the writings of fanfics.

Malal is the god of hate or revenge I believe(its been a while since I was into 40k) and he hates the other chaos gods. This Malal worshipping marine works to keep the chaos gods from working together with assasination and framings. Its combat is done really well.

edit:hmm I decided not to be lazy and put a link here...and I cant find it. Thats a damn shame...

40k Has good fanfic anyway. Its a universe designed to have room to make your own worlds and armies, so it lends itself well to fanfic too. Its not like if you write a LOTR fanfic and try to insert a new city and a lotr nerd pulls out a map and asks you to point out where it is!

I've found a few that are simply amazing. They're all pony ones, that's the only fanfic I'm willing to read.

On A Cross and Arrow [http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/06/story-on-cross-and-arrow.html] (Adventure, Rule 63)
Through The Eyes of Another Pony [http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/08/story-through-eyes-of-another-pony.html] (Adventure/Comedy)
The Contest [http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/11/story-contest.html] (Comedy)
Rarity's Rodeo [http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/07/story-raritys-rodeo.html] (Slice-of-Life, Shipping)
Swayback Mountain [http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/01/story-swayback-mountain.html] (Shipping)
The Ballad of Twilight Sparkle [http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/05/story-ballad-of-twilight-sparkle.html] (Comedy, Shipping)

and finally, Romance Reports by SleeplessBrony which I won't link because it has some explicit scenes, but it's quite possibly one of the best stories I've ever read. You'll have to search it out yourself.

I was never into fanfics, until I heard about My Little Dashie. So well written, reduced me to tears. Not "a single tear drops down my cheek" tears, but "Blubbering like a ninny" tears.

Then there's What Separates, essentially a "Human in Equestria" story that's very well realized, and Dear Diary, What am I?, a backstory for Discord.

Good and fan fic are mutually exclusive concepts.
False. 90% of fanfics are crap, just like everything else - but there are so many, and they're all so easily accessible, that the 90% is very obvious and sometimes seems like 100%.

Two of my favourites are currently
1) Chunin Exam Day - Naruto
77 reasonably long chapters but it's a good read even if I haven't finished it yet.
2) Brilliant Creatures - Pokemon / Harry Potter crossover
I've lost count of how many times I've read that one and still not sick of it. I'm fairly sure I've read the full thing twice in two days once.
