If you like Harry Potter, read Altered(ing) Destinies. I'm not sure about the ending of Alter, but it is still really good!

There is an excellent Harry Potter fic featuring Hermione and Snape that stays a long way away from "she loved him for years, but could never show it!" nonsense. It's extremely well written, dark, exciting and engrossing.

It's 90k words, and well worth your time.

I will add this from the page:

Author's Note: This fiction is dark in places and I will post appropriate warnings at the top of the relevant chapters. This is my first fanfiction, so I hope you all enjoy reading it as much as I've enjoyed writing it. All characters courtesy of J.K. Rowling and her fantastic imagination.
(note, I'm not the author)

To quote Yahtzee:

Short answer, no.

Long answer, nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

In my experience, all fanfic devolves into one of three categories

1) Fanshipping, where the author shoehorns their ideal romantic character pairings into the narrative, regardless of the context, or indeed tone of the continuity, or

2) Mary-sueing, where their own character comes along and utterly dominates the entire universe, or

3) a horrific mishmash of the above two.

Sonichu the Animated series.
Yes, while it isn't exactly fanfiction the art and later animation is pretty great and the obvious ren and stumpy inspiration really adds to it. "last episode... Nothing happened. Something with a guy in a picklesu- I don't know the story sucked anyway."

Portal: Blue Sky. You'll find it on fanfiction.net, and it is on the level of Portal 2's writing itself.

Fallout Equestria (MLP:FiM) is cocking huge, and I've read all of it and (mostly) loved it. That should tell you how amazing it is. But you probably won't like it if you haven't watched MLP, Fallout fans who don't like MLP or have watched it won't really enjoy it. You don't need to have played a Fallout game, but someone who has will be basking in all the references and allusions that show up.

Seam by Seam (Homestuck) is absolutely heartwrenching. Really, it's because I love the ship more than anything, but dear god were the emotions sad and pacing fantastic.

There's good and then there's good.

For instance, the Evangelion fanfic, "Nobody Dies", is hardly a testament to the Eva universe. It is, however, funny as goddamn hell, plus chips. I would recommend it just because it's nuts.

1d4Chan is much, much funnier than it has any rights to be.

Angry Marine fan fics ftw.

Good for WHAT exactly?

Because I have quite a few I have loved simply for their ability to comfort me on a lonely night...

Also, Cupcakes is great.

It's an interesting crossover of a story and I've been enjoying it thus far: The Queen Who Fell to Earth [http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7591040/1/The_bQueen_b_bwho_b_bfell_b_to_bEarth_b#]

It's Harry Potter crossed with Dragonriders of Pern. It's one of those fics that doesn't sound like it'd work but it does, much akin to Fallout:Equestria.
Dragonriders of Pern you say? I rather enjoyed those books, might have to take a peek at that.
Phew, this is a hard one, can't remember many that I've read, though I'll second FO:E and some of it's off shoots (from what I've read of Project Horizons, I'm actually liking it better)

Meh, can't remember any names, though I do remember reading this short lil fic about how "Twinkle" got its name (Drizzt) and it was hilarious. May not have been written well, but it was a fun read.

basically anything by Erico ( http://www.fanfiction.net/u/55667/ ) or Magus523 ( http://www.fanfiction.net/u/152431/ )is going to be very good by fan fiction standards although it bears mentioning that most of it will only appeal to you if you have an interest in Megaman, Metroid, or Starfox. That being said if you like any of those franchises these are some excellent stories that IMO are in many cases better then the almost nonexistent official stories from the games they are based on.

Does the "Powerpuff Girls Doujinshi" over at http://www.snafu-comics.com/ count? By extension there's also "Grim Tales from Down Below," the quality of the story lines are arguable though, with some really weird stuff going on, but unlike most fanfics at least there's quality art to help tell the story rather than amateurish writing.

Also on the site is "Naruto: Heroes Path," which I just like because I like seeing how the creator neatly imagined the futures of all the Naruto characters.

There used to be this amazing Naruto fan manga that was hosted on the Tokyopop website of all places (they had a section for fan works, but still it seems weird) that imitated Kishimoto's artsyle almost perfectly, and was sort of side story about a group of original characters but set at the same time as the actual manga (pre-time skip) It's lost in the ether now as far as I know since Tokyopop shut down their U.S. publishing branch, and website along with it. Maybe it's still out there but I forgot the name so kind of hard to Google.

Well I do a little bit of writing and while I'm far from perfect...ok enough ego stroking. Personally I like the Enemy of my Enemy, it's a Halo fanfic that details a shaky Human Elite alliance holding out against a massive Brute invasion on a barren desert planet.

If you like cross over Fanfics that aren't stupid look up Renegade, a what if that serves as a crossover between Command and Conquer and Mass Effect, it's really well done thus far.

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5851454/1/Renegade

If you want a good laugh try "Mock Effect" a parody of Mass Effect, really god damn funny.
haha that was awsome, I loved what they did with female/male shep

also...

"Sorry. But call me Jane. Just once in my life I?d like someone to address me by my first name" < thats actually kind of true :/

Mass Effect: Interregnum [http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5775707/1/Mass_Effect_Interregnum].

Can't recommend this enough to Mass Effect fans. It's brilliant.
Agreed 100% on this one, I am currently reading that now and it is excellent. If you love you some Garrus and wanted to see what he was doing to become Archangel check it out.
