So I realized the other day in my JROTC class that a crap ton of people I know are either enlisting at the end of the year or going to college for ROTC to become an officer. Anyone else doing that? What makes you want to do it? What branch?

Likewise if there's any non-US posters are you joining your nation's military?

I'm personally trying for Army through West Point.

If Team Fortress 2 doesn't count, then I'm a pacifist.
All respect due I hope I pay in saying that I regard being a soldier quite the honorable profession, I just do not wish to pursue it myself.

Yep. College sophomore, ROTC. I'm still not contracted; really holding out for an active duty scholarship. If that doesn't pan out, I might wind up having to go SMP, though that's a last resort.

Becoming an officer just seems like the right idea. I'm not the best at this stuff, but I'm getting better. The ultimate goal is to be a badass by graduation.

It's kind of hard not to for me. I live in Finland and every male (unless you have some disease that stops you from joining) must join the army for a minimum of six months to learn the basic military combat stuff. Every half year (January and July) new reqruits get in and half of them will be there for 6 months while the other half will be there for 1 year (they become "under sergeanter" which I believe is called Last Corporal (not sure spelling is correct) in the US) and they get the training of a group-chief. I have been there for 10 months and got promoted to Sergeant a few weeks ago.
So basically a bit under two months left and I applied for a 6 month job there so I can get some money before I go of studying (not going to go to the military academy).
And my main weapon is the Mortars!
There you go, I hope you learned something today :)

If I drop out of school, yes. Why? You don't need to go to college but I don't want to have to go home and hear my parents ***** about me failing. Besides, serving one's country should be an honor. Yeah. Should.

lol,

Go and spend about six months in the inner city. No need to get a federal paycheck, and still just as good for what you are trying to do. May actually do some good, too, if you are willing to go help teach poor kids or whatever.

If you don't like inner city - all of Eastern Europe, central China, most of India, most of south America and all of Africa are saying hi.

Been there done that as enlisted. It was fun and made really good friends plus a super immune system. Don't be an ass as a junior officer. You won't know shit compared to the NCOs in your company, battery or what have you. Listen and learn once you get to the "real" Army and you'll make a fine CO I'm sure.

No.
You will never ever catch me joining the military.

All this stuff about 'Honour' and 'Serving your country' is bullshit.
Besides, it's going to be more glaringly obvious that all these wars are fought for is oil...

Already did that. 4 years in the U.S. Marines. They say "once a marine, always a marine". Well I say "Once a marine...eh, once is enough."

Not the best job I've ever held, let me tell you. Although I suppose I could still be forced to rejoin (since I'm still in the Inactive Reserve phase at the moment.)

yep, another FIN here and going to basic training next January, hoping that it only lasts 6months but there is allways a good chance that I will be forced to be there for 9 or 12 months :)

I'm thinking of joing the Australian army as a reservist was I'm finished my speciality training, which will be in a while because I'm only 4/5 years done of Medicine, with the rest of internship/residency and registrar training to go.

A lot of Doctors I know have done it and they recommend it, the entry is as a Captain. Any service overseas is completely voluntarily and they have a lot of incentives and negotiation involved.

Well... I Used To Want To... For Ten Years...

...Now I've Learned Some Things And I'm Not Gonna Sign Up To Go To A Foreign Place And Fight And Kill People For A Lie... A Government-Made Lie.

That And I'm A Conscentious Objector Now.

The Only Reason I'd Break That Is If Somebody Really Was Threatening To Come To My Country, And Kill Me, My Family, My Friends... But Nobody Threatens To Do That Anymore.

Finland has mandatory military service, so I'm actually in right now. Currently done 10/12 months. Went to NCO School and became a Squad Leader for City Jaegers in the Guard Jaeger Regiment in Santahamina, Helsinki - you can look it up on wikipedia under "Guard Jaeger Regiment". It's been an amazing experience in terms of leadership; both military and normal leadership.

And the best part is that we don't get sent anywhere unless we voluntarily apply - so after 6/9/12 months (depending on what training you receive) you're sent into the reserve and don't have to think about it anymore - unless you get called in for refresher training (which NCO's especially tend to, although the current budget cuts might affect that dramatically).

Long story short - I've thoroughly enjoyed my time, and would gladly serve longer than 12 months at this rate.

Your profile says you were born in 1995, so if you are 16, how have you been in the military for 10 years? Bonus question, why did you make EVERY word you said start with a capital letter?

OT: I've been considering it for a while. The Navy is definitely not for me, I'm not a fan of large bodies of water. I can swim, but I'm not comfortable in it for any longer than 5 minutes and I would probably not do well living on a ship. I've been thinking of visiting the recruiting office in my city and maybe getting some questions answered though and pick the guys brain and weigh my options.

EXTRA: This captcha took it too far! Really? Special characters?
