In my country there's a magical thing called the Consumer Guarantees Act. It protects consumers (hey, that's me!) from getting screwed. In the case of electronics, they must function for a reasonable amount of time - about three years - or the seller of the product must repair it, refund the money, or replace the product. The warranties retailers try to sell you is bullshit, too. If you bought a warranty for less than three years you're basically throwing your money away.
The CGA saved me from buying another Samsung TV. The day after it broke, I called Samsung, said I knew about the Consumer Guarantees Act, and they promptly replaced the broken TV with a brand new one the next day, free of charge. I likes my government, I do!
