Also, Dragon Age, but that's basically The Witcher with the serial numbers filed off.
People keep saying this, I have not played the Witcher (and have no knowlage of what it is based on), but nobody ever goes into detail when I ask them to explain why they think such as you do.
I'm referring to the books, rather than the game, which I haven't played either.

The Witchers are an exclusive order of monster hunters who go through a ritualistic training and induction process which almost kills them but leaves them with supernormal powers.

The Gray Wardens are an exclusive order of monster hunters who go through a ritualistic training and induction process which almost kills them but leaves them with supernormal powers.

The Witchers are in a long period of decline, their numbers are few, they are mistrusted by many and looked down upon by most.

The Gray Wardens are in a long period of decline, their numbers are few, they are mistrusted by many and looked down upon by most.

The nations of the Witcher are riven by internal discord and racial tension, especially towards Elves, and they are threatened by a seemingly invincible army of Evil.

The nation of Ferelden is riven by internal discord and racial tension, especially towards Elves, and they are threatened by a seemingly invincible army of Evil.

The Last Hope for defeating this invincible army of Evil is a new recruit to the Witchers (Ciri) brought in by one of their most highly regarded members (Geralt)

The Last Hope for defeating this invincible army of Evil is a new recruit to the Gray Wardens (You) brought in by one of their most highly regarded members (Duncan)

I try not to use the word "better". Are we talking smarter, stronger, more technologically advanced, what?

"Better" is such a vague concept it's almost meaningless.

The elves in tolkien aren't actually physically stronger, men are supposed to have that on them at least. In the book Hurin's Children, the main character is half and half, and is trained by the elves, so he has their speed and skill, but with the superior physicality's of humans, so is better than most of the elves.

mmm, don't recall any reference to them being stronger than humans (in Tolkien's work I mean), in fact I remember a duel in one of their books were a humam literally beat an Elf in hand to hand combat (The Sons of Hurin if memmory serves), and I found many indirect references that though they are inmortal, they envy human destiny when killed, after all humans are free from this world.

Other authors have also depicted the elves as a more advanced race, yet physically weaker (though magically more powerful), at this momment I recall only a series that specifically indicates that elves are stronger (yes, Eragon)

that being said, they are often portrait as a more advanced race, culturally but not technologically (after all they have a huge respect for nature), and with a higher dominion (at least at first) of magic.

I suppose they are history wise, but once they become a dick about it were no worse than they are.

I hate it when a fantasy uses races just to avoid explanation, "Oh Joredhrl's an elf, we can assume he's fast, strong, beautiful and solemnly deep". When these stereotypes are played with (like in Dragon Age) I can dig it. Humans are so much more diverse and unique, we have women as beautiful as elves, men as short as dwarves and people as ugly and hate filled as orcs.

I'd love to see a fantasy about a short human whose constantly mistaken for a dwarf.

Being alive forever would be terribly boring. It's surprising they didn't turn to drunken orgies or something.
I guess this would be a solution for those boring eternity long relationships

Everything has a pecking order and for now we are high up on that list. Should we encounter a new species that are better adapted than us, then yes, we no longer would be the alpha species.
However, we would still need to define the parameters around which "better than us" is used. Aliens could be more advanced technology than us but if they have no basic means of communication or applications for a given technology, then they are pretty useless.

It'll be like those "prawns" from District 9. You have a species of aliens, who for all intents and purposes have better equipment and technology than us but somehow managed to get subjugated by humans. Which again brings me to the question, how do we judge who is better?.
You don't. You live together in harmony, like Mass Effect!

...

Sort of.

Are elves stronger that humans? I don't think so. They are better in some ways, but humans are better in other ways...well it depends on the book/game/movie they are in.

The fantasy of being an elf is much like the fantasy of being a vampire. Except that elves don't have to dress up in black and wear black makeup.
And they don't sparkle in sunlight or stare at you like they want to stab you!
Damn I hate that Meyer *****!

Tolkein was a linguistics professor and his hobby I think he wanted to make the elvish language the most aesthetically pleasing and 'best' language (from other languages he found particular pleasing to the ear including Welsh and Finnish apparently), so I guess the elves are an extension of that aesthetic. So his elves are supposed to be beautiful, and probably 'better' but not so gauche as to go around advertising it either. Most other elves are based on his, usually exact copies.

The dragon age elves give me a sort of Boudicca vibe: I get the feeling of a celtic people being ground down by roman occupiers, 'uncivilised', 'barbarians' in as much as they culturally separate from the dominant culture, and relegated to second-class citizens. In this case, it depends on whether or not you consider the Celts to have been 'better' than the Romans.
