Coming to think of it, humans sit roughly between elves and dwarfs. They are like a compromise between two exteremes.
This was shown in the Lord of the Rings.
Gimli was srong and slow like a tank, Legolas was fast and skillful. Aragorn was the compromise between them, allowing him to relate to both.

And Gandalf was so awesome, his enemies died from the presence of such awesomeness.
OT: No way. We're more numerous.
Are your pointy ears burning?

Tolkienesque elves (or rather, their pastiches in most fantasy works) are just arrogant cheesy pricks. They are in no way better than humans. On the other hand, gnomes and dwarves - who actually do shit - probably are. Especially when they are not too greedy.
The greed of the other races is what makes the Elves think themselves better than them, actually.

They hate Dwarves because in the first age, a whole kingdom of Elves was slaughtered by Dwarves because they wanted to reclaim a necklace which they had given to the elves as a gift.

And the greed of men is obvious - Isildur keeping the ring for himself, allowing evil to live on when it should have been destroyed forever.

Half elf for life, baby.

Thats what I always play anyway.

I really don't think about Aliens much, because, although I think they do exist, theres next to no chance they'll arrive here in my lifetime.
Congratulations on bringing to a halt all rumours regarding your sexuality.
What, does that mean I'm gay?
I know, it's okay. Sometimes it can just sneak up behind you like that.
What I'm more confused about is, how does being a half elf user make you gay?

I don't like the humans because they're always to stupid looking and I don't like the elves because they're too short.
It's too late to rationalise, just accept your fate and move on.

Of course, the DnD player in me can't help pointing out that you gain conversation skills and a collection of poor imitations of elven abilities. He insists that you should be assertive and pick a proper race - either go the point eared route for the stats and secret door stuff or "man up" literally and use the extra feat and skill to your advantage.

Screw that - just roll a D&D 3.5e Troll Barbarian. "Real Man" stats all at the cost of those bothersome Charisma, Wisdom and Intelligence points that you'll never use anyway.

If you want to be sensible, though, I prefer the Dwarven route. There's no pointy-eared faffing about there. Grace is for the women and the weak.
Tell that to my Halfling rogue you drunken wanker. He'll have your throat slit before you can lower your tankard.

Level adjustment much?

I mean seriously, if you're going to be like that you might as well roll a half-dragon dragon-centaur paladin and be done with it...

So how far does it go?
Is it just the basics or does it go down the Eragon route and take everything that isn't nailed down?

Since this is a bit off topic I should add something so...

Elves have magic to augment physical failings, and in D&D they tend to have a more direct relationship with their gods, which seems like a good thing most of the time.
