Are games too expensive?

I'm not saying some games aren't worth $59, but most just aren't. I make my money but do I reaally need to spend literally hundreds of dollars to own a few new games?

They've always been around that price. So, no. I find that the cost is fine.

I've never complained. I just get games that I can get a couple week's play out of so I'm not down the shops spending £35 every week.

In your title, you confused to for too.

Frankly, I'm not surprised. Games require more and more money to develop as they get more and more advanced. Also, inflation is a factor. That $200 is not worth as much as it used to be, so you get fewer games that are numerically more expensive.

I've been in school so long that I've learned how to be very frugal with game purchases.

* If it's not on the PC, get it through GameFly [http://www.gamefly.com] or like service. $25/mo for all the games you can play (2 games out at a time that are mailed back and forth) is affordable enough. Even if you decide you want to own games, you can usually get them half-off (give or take a quarter) if you rent them through GameTap and opt to keep them.

* If it's a PC game that's a few years old, it might be on GameTap [http://www.gametap.com], another good subscription service. Though I think they're losing it lately - they lost lots of good old licenses and don't get many new ones. (If it's really old, sufficient Google-Fu might locate it as Abandonware, but don't fool yourself - it's just another kind of piracy that's less likely to be enforced.)

* If it's a newer PC game, don't buy it right away, wait for the price to drop. It's really not worth spending $50-$60 on something now you can play for $20 a year (or sometimes even months) later.

* Then, of course, there's the new price for PC games: free. I'm not talking about piracy, but rather the ton of Free2Play MMORPGs and web or indie games [http://jayisgames.com/] you can find these days. Like World of Warcraft? Give Runes of Magic [http://us.runesofmagic.com/us/index.html] a try some time - it's a some-ways-better-some-ways-worse alternative with a much more managable price tag. Even Dungeons and Dragons Online [http://www.ddo.com/] is going free to play. Basically, there's so much competition out there that there's a ton of developers that will give you something for free just to get your attention.

These are interesting times we live in.

Right, that wording was a bit ambiguous. Edited.

Unless its something I've been waiting for and drooling over for a long time, I'll generally wait until the price goes down, I've seem some crazy prices on games here in Canada though, up to $80.00! Not sure what that works out to in pounds though...

Your post is informative, engaging, appealing to the senses, and most of all, it shows that you are a useless inhabitant of the world and should be kept away from all humanity. You might have at least tried to comment on the topic at hand and added anything useful, but if this is all you could come up with, I suppose it will have to do. Don't want you to overwork that brain muscle after all.

On Topic, yes i think games should be cheaper, but I also want developers to put effort into making games. If we don't pay them, they don't make them. Or at least they don't make them well. So, as long as it costs so much to develop I game, I am alright with paying $60 for one.

Games are becoming more expensive, but even N64 games were 40 quid a pop... now brand new day of delivery games are 45... so I can pretty much make my peace with that.

Anyway, all you do is wait a month and check amazon. there's usually a bunch of pre-owned copy's there for about half price.

Prices are more or less the equivalent of the former generations. Maybe they appear too expensive to you now because of the recession and the mass frugal mindset people have adopted due to this.

Well, I think they are expensive. But I don't have much money or know anybody willing to spend.

Honestly, once I have to console, I don't mind spending the money for the games. It's getting me to buy the console...

Well if they aren't get cheaper then they a lot of them need to get better.
At best if people stop just blindly throwing down $60 for every title that "sounds good" and use other ways like gamefly to actually play the game, maybe developers will get wind of it and start making more games that are actually worth $60. Games that even after renting and playing it i'm like, "I want to own this game, It's worth it."
