Are teachers allowed to kick you out of the classroom for looking at your phone?

draconian or not, a zero tolerance policy is a zero tolerance policy.

Should I land a professor job, i intend to dissolve ringing phones in acetone (or whatever other solvent gives the best result). Then, I'll set the liquid on fire.

I suspect that many students will tackle the offender and take the phones to witness such a diversion.

Seriously? If your phone rings in class, at the least you should be made to leave. If it rings often you should be kicked out of the class. You are at college, you're not a f#cking doctor. No-one needs to get hold of you that urgently.

To all those saying he should bring it up with the ombudsman/headteacher etc, do you really think this is the first time she's done this? From the sounds of it this has been the teacher's policy all year and unless they are a new teacher previous years as well. If they are still doing it now, its most likely the case someone did try and complain and got told to go away.

My view is there is absolutely no reason to have your phone on when in class/working and if she had stated the rules and possible punishments beforehand, then you get what you deserve. If people need a way to contact you, give them the name of the college/work. If there's an emergency then the message will be passed on. You also have lunch time and time berween classes to catch up if its urgent and don't forget the old standby of going to the toilet with your phone in your pocket. I'm tempted to go on a nice long rant about this, but will just leave it there.

my one teacher has a zero tolerance policy for phones. She will kick you out of class if it goes off or she sees you texting. Never docked marks from a test tho since that can be fought over and seen as excessive. I have heard of other professors in the school that like to run over and answer your phone for you and make the conversation as awkward as possible

Yes they can. Its their class and they set the polices. I had a teacher that would count you abcent if you we're litearly not in the class the second the class was schedualed to begin. And you know what i respect his decision to do that just like i respect your professors decsion to kick you out because of your phone.

Now i do think its odd that she seems to treat her students like children. But if she says zero tolerance then its your fault for not turning your phone off before class.

Mabey she is a mean spirited ***** but since your in colledge you could always try to take the class with another professor. and if thats not an option it won't kill you to put up with her for a semiester. And most schools let you rate the professor at the end of the term. Let them know that you don't think it was okay for her to do that. It may make her think twice in the future...though proabley not.

I am just curious, are teachers actually allowed to do that? To subtract points from tests and kick students out and mark it against their attendance? I have the class tomorrow, I am not sure if she is gonna do anything else when I get there.
They can. Some are stricter than others and it is worthwhile to note the dos and do nots for all your lecturers. You will serve as an example to the rest of the class, and next time chances are you won't repeat the infraction.

Her classroom, her rules. Where I work, if we see a student's phone, they're confiscated for a week. Uniform infractions can get them sent home or suspended (if they are repeat offenders).

My professors actually encourage me to look at my phone cuz' they're disorganized fucks and need help from my smartphone. Sorry about your situation, though. Sounds like your college is being draconian, but I doubt there's much you can do about it.

If she does it again, just get up and leave. When she asks where you're going, say "Well, I'm absent, aren't I?"

In my high school last week some girl got suspended for 2 days for texting in class.
Count your blessings.
That's completely her fault, and isn't a bad policy at all.

OT: She can probably boot you out of class, but I don't believe she can mark you as absent, and I don't believe subtract points from you at tests either: at least, it's a really stupid policy that makes no sense.

some of it sounds harsh but not unheard of. kicking you out for turning off your phone, however, is crazy. ive never heard of a teacher doing that

She can kick you out of class as punishment but to mark you down in test that you aren't having at the time of being caught or marking you down as absent is an abuse of power and you could most likely get her fired for it.

Its simple, turn your phone off before u go into class.
She has a job to do, and your supposed to be there to benefit from her doing that. If you want to play on your phone then dont go to class and play on it all day if you like.
Dont try and kick up a fuss like a snot nosed spoiled brat when you are the one in the wrong, you have rights yes, but your teacher also does.

Your in college, so it might be time to grow up

In the English department of my Uni you automatically fail a test or exam if your phone isnt a)shut off b) in your bag in front of the exam room where the prof is standing.
So yes, they can do that.
And kicking you out of class is definatly a softer way to go. But since we sit there with our Laptops and W-Lan,like i do now, why should i use my phone at all?

Wait, so your entire class consists of people that can't even turn off their cell when they're clearly in a position where they're not meant to use it.

Please tell me you're just pretending you're in college to appear cooler...
That's pretty much how I feel about it. If/when I become a teacher, that will be policy. It will be stated in the syllabus and if you disobey it, you will be kicked out. It disrupts and distracts both the instructor and the people trying to learn. I don't understand why someone would pay for a class then both with their phone during it.

In my school we got our phones taken off us till the end of the term, or until our parents came in to get it, which IMO is better since I love to learn, I'd hate to get kicked out of class just because one of my mates wont stop texting me.

I haven't been going to school for quite a while now so It's hard to remember the policy of my school exactly, but as far as I remember phones were against the rules and a teacher could do whatever they pleased about it, within reason of course.

If only your teacher owned a few movie theaters as well, the world would be a better place.

Why do you find it so difficult to shut off your phone before class?
YES! Thank you!

Fucking phones in fucking cinemas! ...it really grinds my gears...

As a teacher...I can also say that phones in class is really annoying. While she shouldnt mark you as absent or deduct points from your test, there should be some kind of punishment. You have to be mentally challenged to not be able to shut off a phone.

Her class, her rules.

I applaud her efforts in teaching children the importance of know when it is and when it isn't appropriate to have your phone on.
There are some place you just don't need a phone and it's about time you young people realised that.

Yes.

She's a teacher. They're allowed to do that for any reason. That's the point.

You can complain about her, but against the fact that you're not paying attention, I don't hold up much hope.

Yep, they're a nutter all right. I don't believe they can mar you absent, at least not here in Aus as school attendance is compulsory and I'm sure that it is Illegal as the school is responsible for you and they are tampering with their legal records of who is there and not. Oh, and I'm pretty sure your school can't do anything if your parents don't agree... unless it is a private school or what you have done is illegal or whatever and I mean can't do anything in the sense that if you have your parent's support to not go to detention then nothing bad can happen if you go to detention. They call your parents right? :p Oh and I'm sure you can complain if these tests are ones that decide if you are doing the highest maths next year.

It's not difficult to just turn your phone off before a class. It's fucking annoying, even when it's on vibrate. I see no problem with marking someone absent if they can't do something as simple as that.
