You know it really says something about a journalist when ALL OF THE COMMENTS are better informed and more relevant that the actual body of the article.

Seriously, why doesn't venture-beat fire this author and hire - let me see - ANY of the users in the comment section they could sure as hell do a better job.

But then again, being a good journalist isn't about being informative and interesting, journalists are called hacks for a reason, they make money and get attention from being inflammatory and controversial. They are paid to be a fucking loud mouth.

someone in comments section posted link to this, very relevant:

Best comment from Jared Jeanquart

"You sound like a Twilight fan complaining about how this Bram Stoker guy totally ripped off Stephanie Meyer."

Dean's journalism career = over

to be fair, the first time i saw gameplay of space marine i really thought it played like gears only not that good. but i'm screaming rip-off!?! no, cause its just a genre cover based shooter. now space marine changed to more hack and slasher with shooter elements. i really looking forward to the game, but i'm waiting for some more info. like the online multiplayer, becaue how i see it know, it maybe a fun game but not worth a insta buy.

"Of course, their very name does bear resemblance to the ?orcs? in Tolkien?s Lord of the Rings, but we?ll ignore that for now"
So everything is a copy of single celled organisms, because they did it first?

"First, this post is not research-backed journalism. I walked into a room, looked at a game, and offered what I thought about it. I've been doing that professionally for around 15 years. It's my opinion."
I hate people who make inaccuracies and claim it was opinion. If I said the sky was green, that would be an inaccuracy, not an opinion.

"The look and feel are similar. That is all I wanted to say"
Let's compare that to

"So THQ?s game is really just copying Microsoft?s Gears of War game (made by Epic Games)"
There is also evidence that he was edited the article afterwards, so I'm guessing the most offensive comparisons have been taken out

Haha. This really made my day. A good laugh is what you need on a Friday! Also, nice to see the nods to Heinlein et al.

This is pretty hilarious. It reads like a troll post someone would put on a forum.

"First, this post is not research-backed journalism. I walked into a room, looked at a game, and offered what I thought about it. I've been doing that professionally for around 15 years. It's my opinion."
I really hope this guy is not getting paid to be a journalist, or even a critic, because he isn't.

this is what happens if you make a 40k game and make a space marine the lead character.
Why not somebody interesting, like a no-nosense the end justifies the means kinda inquisitor. Then you might actually get to talk to people AND could use all kinds of fun imperial equipment not just bolter/flamer/plasma/melta gun for ranged and chainsword/powersword/deamonhammer for melee.
Or even better, a dynasty warrior style game that lets you pilot Terminator Armour. Or still better: a tau crisis suit.

"Dean previously worked at the San Jose Mercury News, the Wall Street Journal, the Red Herring, the Los Angeles Times, the Orange County Register and the Dallas Times Herald."

Well it's good that he puts the publications he was previously fired from below each article. I guess he can add another after this.

My main complaint is that it looked like it was written by a GCSE student.
Hey, don't insult us GCSE students. It's not nice.

(Yeah, I think I could probably write better than that if I put my mind to it, and I'm a GCSE student.)

Most of the time they are, yeah (and parts of Lord of the Rings were derived from Norse and Saxon myth).
OK fair enough I stand corrected.
I genuinely thought that Orcs, Elves and Dwarves were an incredibly old idea and that Tolkien may have just adapted them for his books.

Nah, should be a tyrannid game.

Gives you full on action.
A chance for stealth.
A respawn mechanic that makes sense.
A wide variety or weapons and upgrades.

It might lack a plot/relatable characters though.

Haha, time for a hasty edit!

"I did not mean all GCSE students - some A students are bloody good. I mean a GCSE student aiming for D/E and with a slight mental handicap and/or anger issues"

Oh man, Robert Heinlein's ghost is going to be so pissed off once he realizes that he ripped off Starship Troopers from Halo's ODST.

you don't respawn, you just have to do a 5min QTE to reassemble yourself.
