Looking at it at surface level, disregarding any previous knowledge of the series, they look very, very similar. Just WH40K Space Marine has a more awkward camera angle.

Just goes to show how much a little bit of research can save you a whole lot of embarassment. Like the time I told everyone Tom Baker was dead on a Doctor Who discussion without realising that he wasn't...

"The blood spatters are similar and even the guns shoot in a similar fashion."

Wow, you mean, the blood comes OUT of the enemies when you shoot them, and BULLETS come OUT of the gun when you pull the trigger. I can clearly see how Space marine is blatantly cloning Gears of War.

"There is more emphasis on melee fighting and hand-to-hand combat than in gears of War, so the engagement range is larger than in Gears of War."
No, no. That's just wrong...?

"The Orcs bear a resemblance to the Orcs in Lord of The Rings, but we'll ignore that for now."
Yes, because all fantasy races are obviously derived from Lord of the Rings.

I actually just want to slap this person, it cannot be serious can it?

Its sad how much I see his view around these days.

Almost everyone copies games workshops original designs these days, Blizzard pretty much is hell for it. They all get away with it. The moment Games Workshop release a game? Same story every time.

Lol.

Just lol. I suspect trolling, but you can never be too sure.

Well....they pretty much are. Tolkien's brand of fantasy forms the basis of most fantasy work nowadays, and it certainly impacted the races in Warhammer Fantasy and 40k. The Orcs/Orks are vicious battle nuts, goblins are cowardly, the Elves/Eldar are graceful and deadly, the Dwarfs (which makes me want to stab the Games Workshop writer that decided to go with that instead of Dwarves) are short, stocky and live underground. The differences only come into play when they add in their own races, such as Chaos, the Undead, Skaven etc.

Not really a criticism of Warhammer or anything, just an observation that Tolkien is the single most influential writer when it comes to fantasy and his work has become the foundation of modern fantasy.

Ha,ha, ha! Oh wait, you're serious? HA, HA, HA, HA!

Quotes from great animated shows aside... this reeks of ametuer journalism, like that guy claiming that a photoshop of a GTA based on a real-life shooting in England was real and contacting the family of one of the victims about it. Well, it's similar but not quite as... unforgivable as that.

By his logic, games like GTA, Red Faction Guerrilla, Just Cause 2, and the Mass Effect series are blatant clones of Gears of War because their core gameplay is roughly similar.

This is off topic, but I found that funny. Not criticizing you or anything.
Yes, modern and fantasy tend to look.... sorta odd next to each other. Glad to have made you laugh, though.

Now then:

Why does it seem like they picked the guy with the most Asian sounding name and decided he must be an expert in gaming?
Dean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat. He covers video games, security, chips and a variety of other subjects. Dean previously worked at the San Jose Mercury News, the Wall Street Journal, the Red Herring, the Los Angeles Times, the Orange County Register and the Dallas Times Herald. He is the author of two books, Opening the Xbox and the Xbox 360 Uncloaked.
Wow... for a guy who has no idea what he's writing, he's certainly written a lot... I wonder if his books are as well researched? Or has Nintendo been ripping off the motion controls from the Kinect as well?

Typical. Everybody who has seen a space marine type game believes there's some rip-off artist taking from their work. None of them are true, except perhaps some of the bits from 40K into Starcraft, but who even cares? I mean, really, so what?

Wow.

I don't know diddly about Warhammer and even I know it has been around much longer than Gears. The guy should have done his homework.

Edit: I'm tired of people screaming "RIP OFF!" at every opportunity. Damn near everything has been done before. I didn't see many people yelling the Gears ripped its cover system from killswitch(probably b/c it doesn't matter, what matters is if the game is good).

I have to admit, this is one strong reaction to his article.

I mean everybody knows that games generally copy gameplay from other games. So when one person says that it's happening it shouldn't be a big deal. Yet clearly he insulted the wrong franchise.

Lets be honest Space Marines probably does share a lot of similarities with GoW. Does that matter? no. Still probably a fair thing to say the gameplay is similar.

I'm much more likely to believe the guy who saw the demo than a bunch of overly angry trolls who have never played or seen the game.

TL;DR No need to get mad at someone for pointing out similarities. It doesn't mean the game is bad.

*Looks at author's profile*

Good Lord, this joker's the LEAD WRITER of VentureBeat's game division?! And he used to work for the Wall Street Journal?!

I guess he figures things like informed coverage and basic research are beneath him now.
