It really bugs me when people see two sides arguing and automatically assume that "the truth" lies somewhere right between the two sides.

People coming into a long standing debate with no real understanding of the issue and believing that they can show off they're superior intellect by "seeing both sides" and "agreeing with both". Neutrality doesn't automatically make you right.

And the smugness with which this is usually done is unbearable to me.
What if they have thought it through and have come up with evidence showing that the two really ARE equal?
Than I have nothing against it. It is often good to get a "third perspective" in an otherwise stagnant debate. But when the person brings absolutely nothing new to the table and only rephrases some bits and pieces of the arguments already made. That ticks me off.

It is really the question of making a third argument that may to some degree agree with some of the points of the other arguments but including some original thoughts and new perspectives. Or making a pseudo-argument made up of nothing but rewording of other arguments and a general "you're both wrong therefor I'm right" sentiment.

When people assume I need their permission to be gay. "Oh, I don't care if you're gay" "Oh, that's cool with me" Nope, sorry, didn't ask if you were cool with it.

When people assume that I'm disappointed with my job. I went to the bank to cash my paycheck, and the women at the counter recognized the restaurant that I work at, so she asked what I did there. I told her that I was a dishwasher, then she gets a pitied look on her face and says, "Oh, well that's still an important job." I'm only 15, it's not like I was expecting to be CEO of Sony or anything like that. What other job does she really expect a 15-year-old to have? And yes lady, I know it's an important job. Anything that's that much of a pain in the ass had better be important ;P

I'm gonna keep this one video game related. I hate it when the internet assumes that we make up some sort of influential group whose opinions are law, that game companies and the unwashed masses should follow our opinions. Fact is were the extreme minority. If you take the most popular editor on the most popular site that popularity is probably dwarfed by something like lets say Spike tv. The worse part is that everyone's shocked when something like COD sells like crazy, it's called mainstream and we're sadly not part of it so let's play our witcher 2 copies and enjoy it and get over the fact that we're actually not that loud an audience.

I feel your pain, man. Especially with the football one, mainly sports in general actually...

This. I also support this because I've seen a good collection of your posts, and find you very interesting and enlightened. Also you've made me laugh from time to time. I tip my hat to you, good sir.

OT: Okay, this ones been bugging me for awhile, but I've been having problems wording it. Here goes: The idea that just because a group of people share a common liking to something, they're all suddenly apart of a community. Yes technically they are a community, but do I want you to represent me? Do I want to associated with you? It's not that you're a bad person or anything, it's just the next time someone does something stupid, I don't want to lumped in with that. Even if they do something that puts the community in good light, I may still want to stand by my own accomplishments and not feed off someone elses name. I'm not a part of any community, I just happen to like something that other people like as well.
Thanks for the compliments (I tend to stalk, uh, I mean, keep an I on a few certain users as well). Also, weren't you the one to quote my minecraft idea? because I believe I really will build the moon.

People who assume politicians have their best interests at heart.
People who assume that everything will be all right with the environment and show no responsibility for it's upkeep. [Not just people who won't recycle but those who litter, waste gas with huge vehicles, throw away good food, pitch out working appliances in favor of newer ones, ect.]
And the most aggravating one of all-
Demonstrably stupid people who assume they are my intellectual superior and try to talk to me like I'm the idiot.

The assumption that because you're young, you don't understand anything in the world and therefore all of your arguments (ABOUT ANYTHING) are invalid.

Seriously. I once tried to argue that Final Fantasy 7 isn't the best Final Fantasy and I was "beaten" and "disproved" because I'm 15. They said I didn't understand the art of video-games because I "grew up with shit like Halo and COD".

That a kid has to grow up to be a doctor or an engineer or a scientist now to be a success and kids that don't behave have things like being a garbage man waved over their head as a sort of vocational boogie man. As if a man can't be proud of the sweat on his brow and coming home from working hard. Hell, a master underwater welder can pull upwards of $200,000 a year with benefits. The men I count among my most respected are a sergeant from Atlanta, a gas station manager from Detroit, and a contractor from Pittsburgh. None of them would be considered great successes according to this idea, but they're the type of men I would want to be.

That humanity is somehow this amoral, parasitic scum infesting the Earth.

That geographic location dictates a person's character.

That the hobbies a person partakes in is a reflection of their intelligence and personality.

Worst of all the when someone assumes the worst of everything as if the future is set in stone. Not one damn man on this planet can see the future. Never assume the future is certain.

I dislike the conception that the majority of internet-goers are atheists, and the generalization that Christians are bigoted, ignorant or otherwise stupid.
Thank you. I hate that the conservative party is seen as the "religious" party. They claim to be Christians. Oh yes they do. But their gospel of stupidity, hate, and fear are not from any bible I've ever read.

That all JRPGs have a main character with spiky hair and a big sword. Thats only FFVI.
Not even, FFVI was bout Terra, the lady child of an esper and a human, and as such the only person to naturally be able to use magic.
The spiky-haired protagonist was basically ff7 and a few others.
Whoops I ment VII I forgot the other roman numeral.

People who assume that when you say you don't like anime and are an ex-anime fan, that you must be secretly closeted or have some irrational hate for Japan. Racism gets thrown around a lot when that happens.

That all Christians hate-science, and are from america, because hey! such a stupid country like that has to believe in a god to support their tiny bigoted minds! all the other countries are obviously far more developed to believe in god! which is untrue because I am Canadian and the majority of americans are sensible people. like everybody else.

-"All Muslims are Arabs"
Gee, I guess that me being Malay and Asian, I'm not actually a Muslim
-"Muslims are terrorist!" "They are all about spewing hate" "They are holding science back" Etc
Cracked.com, save me now. I seriously don't have the energy
http://www.cracked.com/article_18911_5-ridiculous-things-you-probably-believe-about-islam.html
Sigh, with the Norway shooting thread and other threads popping up I feel terrified to admit I'm Muslim for fear of being lynched
-"Religion is the root of all evil"
Yes, I'm sure it wasn't the fault of the people twisting it's teachings to satiate their greed
-"It's in the Bible/ Quran/ yadda-yada, therefore I must hate gays/blacks/witches/heavy metal"
So you're telling me that in all these centuries we've had these books, No one writing it thought "Hmmm gays are icky. but this book are not supposed to kill. Maybe I'll change that"
-"All athiest are evil people with no moral compass"
Wow, I guess all my athiest friends must be having orgies and murdering babies when I wasn't looking
-"All religious people are intolerant and spout how much God hates things"
Please don't take the image of the vocal minority and apply it to the whole of us. I have never done that. My whole family is more religious than I am and they never do that.

Sorry bout that. I usually never feel like posting about religion but I was reaching my limit

"All metal is about sacrificing goats, screaming, growling and impaling babies"
"All metal that Existed older than 2001/ doesn't involve screaming or moshing sucks/is not TRoo metal"
-Further evidence that my school was filled with retards. "Bullet for my valentine beats Pantera" My ass!
"All metalheads are dirty, violent, heavyset psychos"

Let's see. Personally, a few assumptions I've come across that annoy me:

1) If I make some vague mention of being female, I must be trying to get special treatment for playing video games and being a girl.

2) Following up on number 1, if I am female and play video games, I must either a) play only "casual" games, or b) be godawfully ugly. I just... don't get how those stereotypes/assumptions came about.

3) If you are atheist, you automatically hate all religion. Excuse me, no! I quite respect religious people and never try to force my beliefs on anyone.
LiberalSquirrel, you took the words right out of my mouth. On all three counts! Spooky =)

I'd also extend the first two to cover 'Girl who does science'. I know being a female graduate student in Physics/Chemistry isn't the most comfortable road you can take, gender politics-wise (even today) but jeez...

I *really* hate the assumption that some people make that because I'm a woman, the science I do must be 'easier', and that I must be looking for special treatment. Augh! The whole reason people formed 'Women in Science' groups etc was to effing *protect* themselves from bullshit like that...

*can't...contain...rage...* *BOOM*

*cough* sorry, Rant over ;-)
