I watched it and thought it was alright. No idea how it got so massively popular, suddenly it was everywhere, it was insane.

Anime fans, what do you think of it? Do you love it like a lot of people do, or is it just another fad?

It was entertaining to say the least. There is a very real threat. People are dying left and right. People who you never expect to die, die, because that's what war is. Sure the main character has colossal plot armor , but ignoring him, it's pretty good.

Better than the Walking Dead, but kind of a 'blah' story despite the fantastic premise.

It falls into a lot of anime pitfalls wherein it establishes and establishes, but never frickin explains anything. That, and its characters are fairly bland and one-note, with no real chemistry.

To sum: not terrible, but very over-rated.

Those two options are kinda extreme. I'll go with good, it has a great supporting cast.

I view Attack on Titan as a good anime, just over-hyped to all hell. It deserves some of the hype, but not all it gets. I enjoyed the earlier half much better than the later, after they reclaimed Trost my interest started to wain. By the time they fought the Running Titan in the city, I was just ready for it to be over. My biggest complaint of the series is how when people hype it they say "anyone can die at anytime!" No, that's not true at all. Side characters can get killed at anytime. Eren, Mikasa, Levi, and Armin/Armen, are never going to die, if they do. It will be in a blaze of glory or a massive sacrifice for the greater good. AoT has fantastic action scenes, especially with the 3D maneuver gear.

Holy polarizing hyperbolic click baiting title OP!

That said I'm here and I've seen the series in question so I might as well weigh in.

Attack on Titan is OK. So far so good. Now, you may ask why am I so ambivalent with regards to the series. Well, it's because it isn't done yet. There's another season coming. It is entirely possible that the second season will be all well and good and that the series will resolve in a satisfying manner. It is also possible that the second season will suck ferociously and ruin the whole thing. For example, I used to like 'The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya'. Then the second season of that show came out (well after the fact to boot) and it was, IMO, utter crap. I no longer like that series because taken as a whole it isn't very good regardless of how good the first season was. It is for this reason that I am very concerned about the second season of Psycho Pass, as series that wrapped in such a way as to in no way need a second season.

I've watched a lot of anime, but I didn't like it except for the 1st couple of episodes.
I gave up when there was this one scene (You'll know which one I'm taking about, I won't say too much to keep to spoiler free) where Eren controls his power for the first time and there is so, so much filler that I said ''no thanks''.
I was watching it as it came out and watching the last 10 mins of the last episode all over again the week after, that ridiculously stupid speech in particular, made me give up.
I just watched something else.

I also don't really like the setting, but that's probably just me. I find it simply ridiculous.

I watched the first season. It was.... not bad. Not a very likeable main character but at least he's not one of those "always right and the best at everything" type heroes that anime often goes for.

Not in any big hurry to watch the second season, I kinda worry that if I get invested into it, the show's writers will reveal that they had no plans for how things were going to go and were just winging it like on Lost. "oh an evil wizard made the titans? The End?"

I thought it was solid. Not the best thing in the world and it does suffer from overhype (but that's not it's fault now, is it?)

It's just an above average shonen show with some cross-demographic appeal and an interesting world.

It's a fun show. Not a masterpiece, but neither are most popular things. I definitely get why it's so popular, and I'm not complaining. It was good enough for me to buy the standard BD/DVD combo.

It's decent. At least different from the popular shonen, and the politics plot hasn't jumped the shark so far.

My wife and I are about halfway through the first season and we are both enjoying it so far. It's not the greatest thing since sliced bread or anything like that, but it's still a good show and we find it worth watching.

I find it rather entertaining. It definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat because of how tense and dangerous the situation typically is. So at the very least it's exceptionally engaging.

Is it over-rated? Nah, a lot of people like it so what's wrong with that? Now that being said there are some fans that take it too far like fawning over Levi every second of every day.

It starts off strong, it's just okay for a good stretch of the first season. Then it finally starts getting good as a new enemy shows up. Keep in mind I was winding down from the Spartacus television series so I have to say that the level of violence and "anyone can die" thing is not as hardcore as the fans make it out to be. I was also dissapointed because I was hoping for a protagonist who was more Alexander the Great when really he was more of a conventional superhero. Though I do like the army of Spidermen with swords idea and I feel like that doesn't get used to its full potential.

Largely overrated but still worth watching.

Edit:

They should re-name it "Grunts And Endless Inner Monologue".
See, I'd rename it "People Looking Horrified About Things: The Show"

both?
it's really good, the animation is fantastic and the music is great. but it is also overhyped as fuck because sometimes things escape the circle they are usually hyped in to become massively popular. and then shit gets on the frontpage of reddit and everyone with basic photoshop/windows movie maker skills feels the need to "contribute" to all the funny mejmejs and we and up with things that are overhyped. see also: game of thrones. fantastic show but i always watch it with about a month of delay and basically avoid social media on mondays while it's running.

It's a neat idea but it's overrun with the typical anime/JRPG crap, overwhelming amount of angst.
Look, I get that these are giant monsters and they're terrifying but you have a trained military force to deal with these things and your soldiers are screaming in fear cowering in corners, bloody openly defying orders from superiors to their face, shooting their own faces off, EVERY CHANCE they're given they're screaming "hopeless" and generally not acting like any trained soldier ever.

Yes I know, no military has ever delt with giant monsters that eat people, bla bla these people are TRAINED to fight them and knew of their existence all their lives. You have these badasses able to do amazing things yet are so melodramatic about crap it's just illogical and irritating. I'm not saying DON'T show fear, but they are beyond showing fear they're a step away from wetting themselves.

Fun fights, cool ideas (though I saw the titan 'secret' coming from a mile away) but overall the angst ruins the show.

I really can't find any overriding desire to watch the series, I get that people love the hell out of this series, but, it looks to me as though it's going to be really repetitive 'monster/titan of the week' bull shit.
