No. No. No.

Fuck sake Julia, this ISN'T FIXING ANYTHING! You're supposed to be catching them, not throwing up firewalls and hoping it stops them while punishing our already-cripped internet!

Argh! Im so moving...

Huh, well I don't watch child porn so I'm guessing this won't affect me too much, I will be pissed if this makes my net slower than it already is.
Personally, I know i should be outraged by the infringement on human rights going on right here but I don't think it will effect me that detrimentally. I mean the only websites I really visit are
here, youtube, facebook, a few webcomics and a few comedic sites like the oatmeal or cracked. I'm pretty certain they're not the main target of this so ... yeah meh.

The irony of this is the sickos will inevitably find a way around it and we normal aussies will be stuck with a slower more difficult to use internet most likely, more so than it already is. Effing wonderful

Thank goodness.

After a while I hope we can get this in the U.S. too so that we can phase out internet pornography and piracy.
ROFL. There would be rioting in the streets. Buildings would burn. People would die.
Governments would fall, continents shift, Pigs would fly, chickens would give kissing lessons.
Cats and dogs living together! Mass hysteria!

believe it or not, similar things are going on in the U.S.

If you're in U.S. and disagrees with internet censorship, please sign the cause.
What the fucking fuck is this fucking shit? Are you absolutely sure this is happening? Are they doing this now? If you can corroborate the existence of this policy with another source then I'm getting my family out of Comcast as soon as possible.

I'm an internet DJ and as such I often need to download many new advertisements to play on my show. I often experience temporary slowdowns which can throw me off of my stream near the time in which I download such files. Granted the problem has been largely alleviated by my actions to optimize my internet over my router system, so I'm unsure if this is the issue.

More on Topic: Isn't it ironic that a country founded by criminals would evolve into this restrictive near-fascist state?

Comparing Australia to China? Please. They are censoring a few child pornography sites to prevent people from stumbling upon them. They aren't going to start censoring whatever the fuck they want, and they aren't going to turn into crazy dictators. All of you are using the slippery slope argument.
You cannot accidentally stumble upon a site with child pornography.
Yes, yes you can. My Father is a UK Police Officer who was worked in child crimes for over 25 years and over sees internet operations every few weeks. I know for a fact you can and many do. Most of it is unknowingly child porn.

Anyway, the rest of your post was just nasty and snidey so I'll just leave that out.
No. Just no.

*faceplam*

People who make child pornography don't go around making it easy to "stumble upon". One doesn't just Google "best ski resorts" and find a kiddy porn ring. In fact, the makers have many legal reasons (being devoid of empathy, the creatures they are) to make it very, very, very hard to find. You think these people make their crap easy to find? That they just set up a forum and start trading? Lol. You better tell all those computer technicians working with the police they aren't needed -- any Joe Blow can just use Google to find it. XD

Go ahead. Google something. I bet you $5000 you will not "stumble upon" anything akin to that. Try it.

Considering the arguments put forward, i disagree with this. I get its to try and crack down on child porn and things, but the means of constricting something designed to be free are not justified by the ends IMHO.

Thank you for taking the entire conversation out of context and proving nothing. Well done.

We were discussing the trade of the crap, not a poorly moderated forum posting here or there. You could post anything right now on this site and say the same thing.

Again: well done.

Fix your title. There's no internet filter. It's not law, only three ISPs have decided to use it.

Other huge ISPs have refused to use it, iiNet(second biggest), Internode, TPG, AAPT, and all the little ISPSs. Personally, I'm with internode.

It just seems like you're sensationalizing with this title, and it doesn't do any good, it just causes people to think Australia is turning into Iran or something.
This.

Guys, chill out. This is not anywhere near the travesty all of you seem to think it is. First off, this isn't compulsory. Only two internet providers are blocking some of the sites ACMA has blacklisted. If you really don't want to have a few child-porn sites blocked, just make sure you're with one of the many providers who have rejected the plan.

Secondly, there are only 500 sites on the list which has been constructed over the course of over a decade. All of the sites blocked are definitely sites that need to be blocked. Don't get all freaked out because you think your favourite porn site will get blocked, unless you're into child porn, you'll be fine. It's not the 'filter' many of you seem to think it is, it's not blocking sites that get caught in a net of vague and ambigious key words.

And finally, this is not the same as the filter Conroy proposed a few years back. That filter has been effectively rejected, since it would never pass through the Senate. This has nothing to do with the current Labor government. There are plenty of reasons to be pissed off with Gillard - this is not one of them. ACMA's decisions are not dictated by the government.

And on a slightly unrelated note: I always knew yanks were pretty cynical about the motives of the government and corporations, but holy shit, this is completely absurd. Some of you need to completely reassess how you pereive the government. They're not out to kill you, jesus christ. Two things that might help you - if a government of a developed, democratic nation does something wrong, it's almost certainly a fuck up. And secondly, if you have to choose between a conspiracy and a fuck up, it's the fuck up.

Telstra is already doing tests of it in my area i think, the internet in our area has gone down to near dialup, so i guess i can't get anything from stream.
Odd, the same thing happened over here. One day the net just started crawling and no one knew what was up. which was odd because we're on an unlimited broadband plan with Dodo (though I'm not sure what the hell that was)

Everyone can say that 'it won't work' and 'they'll just find other ways'...
but what you have to admit is that it sends a message. In that Australia doesn't want any pedo's ruining our country.

If the government had the ability to stop criminals from communicating with each other...
That's a big if. Nothing like this is going to stop professional criminals from communication with each other considering how easy it seems for things to get hacked these days. Professionals will have way more resources then them anyway, I'm sure they will get past it. Unprofessional crime won't be affected by this at all either. Does it really require much internet communication to go kidnap someone off the street? I don't think so. All this is doing is putting is giving the government more control and speaking as an Australian that's the last thing we as a nation want.

I have yet to find a single person who likes our government. Not one, so there is no way giving the government more control will be good for Australia or do anything to prevent crime since they are so completely incompetent.
