Who cares whether Aang is Asian or not? What matters is whether or not the actors can actually act well enough to play each character. If they can, and good actors are given the roles, then who cares what race they are? If they ever made an Eastenders film and had a Brazilian woman play Peggy Mitchell, I wouldn't care. That'll never happen, of course, but all I'd care about is whether the actor could play the role well.

If I were him I would reload the shirts that had no actual reference to Airbender and see viacom try and stop me.

Do the people across the pond even like Avatar? They're probably more iffed at the idea of an Americanized anime to begin with. So, assuming I'm right, would they even care if Aang was white? Would they, going on an extreme limb, even prefer that Aang was white in the movie to emphasize that the show was American to begin with?

For that matter, isn't it just as racist to demand that a perfectly good white actor be replaced by a potentially subpar Asian actor? Not that Asian actors are necessarily bad.

On a slightly different note, why are people getting in an uproar over the casting? They should be in an uproar with this latest trend to make live action movies out of anime. DBZ has already been mentioned.

Being from across the aforementioned pond, I can say yes, we do like Avatar over here, although not me personally, as I'm nearly 30. Pretty much all the anime we get is Americanised, as the dubs are usually done by American voice actors, and no, I don't think that we'd prefer a white actor, certainly not for the reason you suggest anyway.

The 'potentially subpar Asian actor' you're referring to is Dev Patel, star of Slumdog Millionaire. You may have heard of it, it won some awards.

Finally, in the grand scheme of things, movies based on anime really pales in comparison to discrimination in the media.

am I allowed to use the Ion Cannon on Viacom?

{Yes}/{No}
Firing Sequence Activated. Are you Sure about this? Firing sequence cannot be halted after initiation.

{Yes}/{No}

Firing Sequence Initiated: Firing Main Beam.
Direct Hit. Target Eliminated. Fire again to be sure?

{Yes}/{No}
Secondary firing was success. 100% of Viacom building is destroyed. Gamma-Ray fallout has rendered the area uninhabitable. Unfortunately the police have been alerted to the location on the user who pressed the "Yes" key. Have a nice day.

As much as the show took a lot from chinese culture, did Aang ever sound or really even appear asian besides how he dressed and moved?

So... How would you translate that into an asian role?
You'd be going the opposite way to how the Dragonball movie went.

Let's ignore the fact that despite the fact most anime is set in the country of it's origin, that most character appear Westernised anyway...
They're intended to look like people from the western side of the globe, so why can't they be cast as such?

I honestly couldn't picture the majority of roles in Avatar being done well by asian actors, even with thick american accents, It just wouldn't work for me, it's not a racial prejudice of preference It's just the way the show seemed to portray itself while I was watching.

but hell, what we're all forgetting is, no matter what the majority of us think, it's not going to change anything.

Stop expecting everything to change just because you and several others don't agree and perhaps just be glad that they're attempting a movie?
That way, if you're disapointed after seeing it, it'll be JUSTIFIED.

They'll have to make it through my impenetrable wall of baby seals [http://www.mysteryaction.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/flash/anal_seepage_short.swf].
your wall is irrelevant. Have a nice day.

Wait...I'm confused...so doing a quick google image search the character is white. Yes his "nationality" might not be white but considering it looks like a slew of other characters aren't white, so its not like every other anime where every character is white. So why are the shirts saying Aang isn't white when he clearly is?

To me this sounds like snooty anime fans that crawl out of the wood work every time an American company touches an anime because it ruins it "authenticity" or whatnot.
