I'm just going to throw it out there: I hate piracy.
I don't know how many people on this site pirate games, movies, music, etc. but I really can't stand it.
If you like a movie then you buy it.
I don't care if someone has a great quality pirated version while the movie isn't even out yet, I would never dowload that, regardless of the movie.
I really hate getting on the moral high horse, especially when I'm talking about something that's obviously wrong, but I just can't stand it.
but what about movies that had gone out of print?
PS I KNOW that Avatar is still in print but lets say it was out of print and you still want to see it

I wonder just how many copies something has to sell before they stop being so concerned about potential losses however. 10 million...100 million? There's a maximum number of copies you're going to sell in terms of cinema tickets, dvds etc. If you get close to that number, I really don't think piracy (yes, it's still wrong) is affecting your profits too much.

The people who consistently get hurt by piracy, I'd suggest are smaller companies and anyone in the lower rungs of the entertainment industry. Hving said that, if Avatar had made another $100 million, I don't see the lighting guy or key grip getting an extra $100 out of it.

Kickass? Really?

Not that I thought it was bad or anything, but.....really?

Anyway, I'm against Avatar winning ANYTHING, even if it is most pirated copies.

Do you know what I hate even more than piracy? The pretentious people who act like piracy is the downfall of the modern world and take any opportunity to slander it. I'm just putting it out there.

Sure, I don't like piracy that much either, and I'd be pissed if someone pirated my copywrited material, but it isn't OMG DA WORST THING EVVAAHHH.

There are plenty worse things out there which would be a better use of resources, it clearly isn't harming the industry one bit (like those people would've paid to see the movie if a free version wasn't avaliable, if they wanted to pay they would've paid).

It really annoys me that companies spend a crapload of money on annoying DRM (which only seems to punish the legitimate consumer) when murderers and rapists are out free or children are starving in uganda or (insert save the world ideal here).

Chances are these people who downloaded Avatar wouldn't have paid to see the movie even if the pirated version wasn't avaliable. They just had a 'i'll check it out because it isn't going to cost me anything' idea. Not that that's right, but it isn't harming the industry at all. Especially when Charlie Sheen earns more money from a single episode of two and a half men then I will earn in my lifetime.

Also, not going to reply to any responses anyone directs at me. I'm sick of debating this issue. And this is my opinion of the whole thing, which I am entitled to, if you want to disagree with me, then fine, let's agree to disagree.

Something I don't think has come up.

Avatar was so hyped as this amazing use of 3D - you MUST come and see it in the 3D at your local theatre...

Yet it's the most pirated - and therefore biggest 3D failure in history surely?

That many people all decided '3D? Meh, I'll watch it on my PC'.

I really hope the execs picked up on this, tho I doubt it, they'll be to busy buying some more politicians to lock the internet up some more.

Me too, friend.

For the thread at hand: Why can't people shell out a few dollars to see it legally? They worked hard on it and in some cases spent millions of dollars making it, why deprive them of their cash? All those figures of piracy I see could help make a bigger budget for a sequel. I mean come on, you have to at least be interested in the movie to want to pirate it, so something caught your attention. And this isn't just for Avatar, all the other movies on that list that were pirated millions of times. Some of them didn't make a lot of cash and really could have used the help.

(PS: I wonder how people who pirate would feel if they made something popular, only to have it pirated as well. Bet it'd feel pretty bad.)
You do realise what a ridiculous amount of money these people pretty much always make right? The people that actually suffer from piracy are in a very vast majority people who have money literally seeping out of every orifice. See South Park's episode on it really, for 99% people affected by it, it is nothing but greed when they complain they want more.

Also, the pricing on material that's generally pirated is pretty much the same everywhere. So if you live in a developing country, you blow a third of your salary on a single DVD, while if you live in a progressed country, you shell out money made in about an hour of work. And the people that complain about and/or hate piracy are somehow mostly found being the member of the latter group.

There's also the argument that if you can't afford to get something, what's the point of not pirating it? There is no profit difference to the people who made it, either way they don't get your money.

Greed is bad I agree. If you have the money and choose to pirate something just because you can, sure, that's not something I condone. But if you're short on cash and couldn't otherwise afford to enjoy something, why have it denied? What possible purpose does that serve?

You think it's bad for the developers? See Tim Schafer recently remarking how Psychonauts was widely popularized by piracy (something, by the way, that might actually end up in earning him profit when he throws out a sequel). Now that's a small time developer that didn't make a bundle of money on his product and if he's not affected by it to the point of losing extraordinary and very necessary amounts of money, how can you feel sorry for the big budget products who already make profits (that they indeed are very happy to brag about whenever they can)?

And if you want to get into greed, why don't we talk about the fact 3D movies cost extra to see in the movies, a cost they charge extra for no other reason than that they can. It costs more to make? Excuse me, I didn't notice a price difference between seeing a low budget and a high budget movie, so wanna try that again? Not to mention every producer out there and their dog are making exclusive 3D movies or additional shitty 3D productions just to cash in.

While we're at greed, ever notice how those things pirated are generally things you can't really try before you buy? They're very much free by law to sell you a shit, or even a highly dysfunctional (Civilization 5 anyone? or if you want a movie, how about Clash of the Titans' 3D version?) product.

The other day we rented "Inception" and the DVD wouldn't let us skip the previews. Next Chapter, Menu and FF buttons were all disabled. If we didn't have other things to do (put groceries away) we would have ripped the DVD just to be able to skip the previews. All in all I think there was 15-20 mins of previews.

You have all seen that picture of all the steps a non pirate has to go through to watch a movie they paid for while the pirate can just pop the movie in (or click a link) and start watching.

Forced previews or any type of button lockouts are unacceptable.
I think worse than previews are the "DON'T PIRATE" adverts that so many DVDs have before you get to the menu.

Pirates don't have to waste their time watching these shitty 'Piracy=Bad' adverts but people who bought legitimate copies are forced to sit through it? You wanna include Piracy=Bad adverts? Fine. Put them after the credits at the end of the movie. That way I never have to watch them because I can just take the disc out.
