I'm just going to throw it out there: I hate piracy.
Me too, friend.
For the thread at hand: Why can't people shell out a few dollars to see it legally? They worked hard on it and in some cases spent millions of dollars making it, why deprive them of their cash? All those figures of piracy I see could help make a bigger budget for a sequel. I mean come on, you have to at least be interested in the movie to want to pirate it, so something caught your attention. And this isn't just for Avatar, all the other movies on that list that were pirated millions of times. Some of them didn't make a lot of cash and really could have used the help.
(PS: I wonder how people who pirate would feel if they made something popular, only to have it pirated as well. Bet it'd feel pretty bad.)
You do realise what a ridiculous amount of money these people pretty much always make right? The people that actually suffer from piracy are in a very vast majority people who have money literally seeping out of every orifice. See South Park's episode on it really, for 99% people affected by it, it is nothing but greed when they complain they want more.
Also, the pricing on material that's generally pirated is pretty much the same everywhere. So if you live in a developing country, you blow a third of your salary on a single DVD, while if you live in a progressed country, you shell out money made in about an hour of work. And the people that complain about and/or hate piracy are somehow mostly found being the member of the latter group.
There's also the argument that if you can't afford to get something, what's the point of not pirating it? There is no profit difference to the people who made it, either way they don't get your money.
Greed is bad I agree. If you have the money and choose to pirate something just because you can, sure, that's not something I condone. But if you're short on cash and couldn't otherwise afford to enjoy something, why have it denied? What possible purpose does that serve?
You think it's bad for the developers? See Tim Schafer recently remarking how Psychonauts was widely popularized by piracy (something, by the way, that might actually end up in earning him profit when he throws out a sequel). Now that's a small time developer that didn't make a bundle of money on his product and if he's not affected by it to the point of losing extraordinary and very necessary amounts of money, how can you feel sorry for the big budget products who already make profits (that they indeed are very happy to brag about whenever they can)?
And if you want to get into greed, why don't we talk about the fact 3D movies cost extra to see in the movies, a cost they charge extra for no other reason than that they can. It costs more to make? Excuse me, I didn't notice a price difference between seeing a low budget and a high budget movie, so wanna try that again? Not to mention every producer out there and their dog are making exclusive 3D movies or additional shitty 3D productions just to cash in.
While we're at greed, ever notice how those things pirated are generally things you can't really try before you buy? They're very much free by law to sell you a shit, or even a highly dysfunctional (Civilization 5 anyone? or if you want a movie, how about Clash of the Titans' 3D version?) product.
