Condemned 2: Bloodshot
Apparently. the guys at Monolith thought that the best way to make great horror game better was to ruin it.

I liked Condemned 2. Until the end of course. But the first half of the game had some of the best first person gameplay I have ever seen. Completely immersive. You could see your feet, you could talk, you could see yourself in a mirror, the controller shook every time you hit some one (or maybe it didn't; my memory is a bit hazy). I got so sucked into it.

True, the gameplay was infact better than the first in practically every way. It's just that...the plot...

Then the game switched from gruesome, slightly hard to watch melee combat to shooting...then to that super yodel thing.

Also, Ethan in the first game, Criminal Origins, was easily one of the more realistic and relatable video game protagonists. But in the second, he's pretty much a hybrid of post First Blood Rambo and Snake Pliskin with alcoholism and several times the asshole mentality. Okay, I get that Ethan has lost some of his marbles since the first game, but Christ does he really have to be such a (potty mouthed) jerk all the time?

Far Cry 2 doesn't count as Crytek had nothing to do with it. I'd also say Condemned 2 except I refuse to acknowledge its existence.

See, I haven't played the first game, but I loved Ethan Thomas in this game. I rather like that sarcastic asshole mentality in characters (see Travis Touchdown). But it's a matter of personal taste, I guess.

Modern Warfare 2, Bioshock 2, Deus Ex: Invisible War... Yeah, those are the obvious ones.

Modern Warfare 2 felt like the developers were saying "We can release anything we want and it will still sell because it has COD slapped onto the title". And thus we were cock-slapped.

Red Faction 2. The first was a rather simple fps but I enjoyed it. The second was just so ugly, primary color palette ftl. I also absolutely hated the plot line with a passion.

I was also disappointed in the "streamlining" they did to the RPG elements in Mass Effect 2. I liked being able to get new guns and armor, and I wasn't impressed with cutting down on the skill/talent tree. However, the inventory system in Mass Effect was terrible, so they definitely needed to do something about it. I just think they went too far. But overall, I thought Mass Effect 2 was a great game, and having recently replayed the original, I think ME2 plays way better.


Though I am a little worried about Dragon Age 2, and Bioware's decision to make it more like Mass Effect (character wise). But I've never played a Bioware game I haven't really enjoyed, so I'm optimistic that it will probably be a good game.

I have been trying to think, and I have yet to think of one video-game franchise that has a bad first sequel.

This does not include third or fourth or so on games in the series, it is just the second one.

Also, games made by a different company, aka KotOR 2 or Bioshock 2.

So, are there any?

i think bioshock 2 is as good as, if not more fun than bioshock 1.

as for bad sequels... devil may cry 2... it's balls compared to devil may cry 1.

Absolutely. Mass Effect 2 was fantastic.... as good as 1? Perhaps not, but I'm hoping to see a hybrid of the first two games for the 3rd.

the RPG elements in the first game were annoying as hell
all the biotic and tech powers were completely useless compared to the pistol
even if you powered them all the way up
and all the weapons were useless compared to the sniper
and there were enough points available to get all but one tree leveled all the way up
so the RPG element in ME1 was "how fast can i dump all my points into the sniper tree"

they did take out half the content from the first to the second game with the illumination of the explorable planets
but they gave a good reason to play as the biotic tech or mixed classes
in ME 1 the only reason to not be a soldier was to say "Look at me, I don't need heavy armor"
when all you did was snipe enemies from the next town over or run them over in the Mako

Mass Effect 2 was one of the only sequels that ever improved a game to me

Halo 2 and Halo 3 to me are absolutely awful sequels. They have so much potential to be as good as the first but they just fuck it up in so many different ways. I wish they had kept the Arbiter thing as it made the story a lot wholer as it gave the two sides to the story not just the typical human one.
