Do you have some bands that you like that almost nobody has heard of? I've found some good bands that only a few of my friends have actually listened to and they sound good.

Please also post what kind of music it is, here are a few of mine.

Riverside-Progressive rock
Fightstar-hard rock/scream/soft rock (<pulls it off somehow and sounds great)
Ashes Divide-Rock
Tool-Progressive rock
A Perfect Circle-rock
Puscifer-I'm not quiet sure really...

Edit: Yes ok, I get it, Tool is out there. I just don't see many people listening to them where I live.

Tool is hardly overlooked, I think.

Anyway, I'd suggest Placebo, an alternative band, and Big Star and Badfinger, two rock bands from the '70s.

Tarot is one that hardly anyone knows about, and they've been around for over two decades already.

Here's a sample:

Nightwish- which is basically evanescence if evanescence had more than one good song and hard Metalica's guitarist.

This song makes you both feel sophisticated and want to headbang.

Did you just say that "Tool" was overlooked?
How old are you, kid?
If you had been around for the 90's, when Tool was in their prime, you would know. They sold out fucking STADIUMS.

Two bands that I think are rather criminally overlooked are Cynic and God Is An Astronaut. Cynic play a sort of extreme metal/jazz hybrid, while God Is An Astronaut play instrumental rock.

Shpongle!

It's like the ultimate fusion of.....everything! Damn brilliant stuff, and people who actually know about it are very few between.

And, no, I don't think psychoactive substances are strictly necessary to enjoy it...
and I do think it qualifies as a band, in the loosest sense of the term...

Just to let you know, I see Tool everywhere.

OT:
Fear Before the March of Flames (aka Fear Before) - post hardcore/amazing
the lyrics are amazing, and they know how to put just the right amount of enfasis on the instruments, so it doesn't seem like each songs about the band showing how good it is at solo and whatever, that so many metal bands do.

SUGARCULT is a fun band that most people have heard, but don't realize they've heard.

As far as truly overlooked bands: Just Surrender was a fantastic indie rock band out of Canada, but I haven't heard hide nor hair of them since their first album came out.

Kasabian? Overlooked?
That's hard to believe but I'll take your word for it.
Anyway I've yet to meet someone who listens to The Evolutionaries.

Oceansize.

New-prog, Progressive Rock, at times Post-rock and Space rock.

Ignore the laughably bad video.

Gogol Bordello: Very unique sound, best described as Gypsy Punk:
