Well the only band i can think of at the moment that people may overlook is

Volbeat-danish country metal.
Heres a good example

Sybreed, sweet fsm they are awesome, I found them randomly about 2 months ago and have been hooked, yet I know absolutely know one who listens to them and I never hear them mentioned, fustrating!

Enslaved, holy crap, one of the most under rated and overlooked bands EVER, they are absolutely insane yet they get passed over by almost everyone. Severe injustice.

Personally I think there is no overlooked band more than Gojira, you kind of have to get them, but once you do, holy fuck they will blow your mind. Between The Buried And Me are criminally over looked too, both are fantastic bands.

Seriously though, Gojira, you are missing out, seriously. Best metal band in years.

50% of OPs bands are Maynard James Keenan bands. Clearly not an overlooked fellow hwne you consider the following of each of the three.

Shpongle!

It's like the ultimate fusion of.....everything! Damn brilliant stuff, and people who actually know about it are very few between.

And, no, I don't think psychoactive substances are strictly necessary to enjoy it...
and I do think it qualifies as a band, in the loosest sense of the term...
Damn. My entire town loves Shpongle, and coincidentally devours said substances at a freakish rate :p

You guys need Mr. Bungle. Imagine crazy circus metal, with a little bit of polka.

Yay music industry guy in a music thread.

I find it bizarre what many people here consider "overlooked" music, but I admit that I have a somewhat jaundiced view of these things, so I won't single anyone out because that would be mean. Threads like this are good though, it'll broaden a few horizons a little bit I guess.

Keep in mind, forum friends, that some stuff is overlooked for a reason. Part of my job is kind of like a "professional overlooker" and when some nonsense music comes into the office that I really think the world is better off without (which I assure you is the vast majority of it), it goes straight into the "we'll deal with that at some unspecified future date when nothing good is happening" cupboard. If you've ever wondered why your favourite semi-obscure bands never reach past a certain peak in popularity, it's probably because not as many people actually like that stuff as you might think. Or, maybe one really important person doesn't like that stuff. Or maybe important people think the music is okay but someone in the band did something to make themselves not liked by someone else who was given the task of handling their business (boy, it sure pays to be nice to people who work for you in this industry). There are plenty of ways for someone in the industry to stop progress from happening for an up-and-coming artist. Some of the "obscure" bands listed in this thread have had things like this happen to them multiple times for various reasons (not naming names).

Overlooked... Mirrorthrone, they (or really he, its just one guy) got a song in brutal legend, So Frail. That cd is great (gangrene), the other 2 not quite as good. Opeth, very well known but overlooked a lot because of the dedication it takes to listen to one of their cds, especially their older stuff. Not really music you just put on to listen to. Someone mentioned Cynic and i may agree to some extent. Most progmetal fans that lean toward the extreme death side (away from the styles of dreamtheater and their ilk), know of and love Cynic, and many declare Focus to be the best album in progmetal period. But outside of them, i havent seen many people who are aware of them. Vektor is another fairly obscure and overlooked band. They were lumped in with the other retro thrash revival garbage bands, but they play a very different style of thrash from the slayer/metallica/testament crap you heard a lot of. It's more like Death and atheist, with voivod inspired scifi lyrics, with some prog elements thrown in. Black Future is a crazy good album.

Bloc Party (though I think they are fairly big overseas) and Ladytron. Both awesome. I used to think most people know of them, but I often am responded to with a "Who?"

Frank Zappa, he gets passed off a as a dude who wrote funny strange songs, when he wrote intense, rhythmically challenging music, not just for his band, but for orchestras, plus he wrote jazz and classical music. Also, most of his guitar solos were improvised.

Bloc party gets quite a bit of attention in Sydney.

Well, in the states they are pretty low key. But then alot of people here know shit about good music, so good music gets overlooked constantly.

Well I'm a hardcore metal fan (not as in the genre but as in i eat sleep and breath metal) so i am only naming metal bands:
Angel Witch
Queensryche
Anvil
Overkill
Blind Gaurdian
Blitzkrieg
Diamond Head
King Diamond
Mercyful Fate
Budgie(more hard rock but w/e)
Angel Witch - Hells yes, the s/t 25th anniversary edition is an essential NWOBHM record.
Queensryche - I own ALL the albums and have seen them live. Definitely among my all time favourites.
Anvil - Saw them live, have the documentary ordered from ebay. Worth it for their story alone.
Overkill - How can dudes that old thrash that hard? They've just signed a multi album contract FFS! If only they were coming to Perth on their Aus tour.
Blind Guardian - Eh, the best known power metal band. But the general public doesn't know the genre exists.
Blitzkrieg - Fark yes Sir. I have the last three studio albums and the live album. Anything else is studipdly hard to come by on CD. Man, I want the 'A Time of Changes - Phase One' compilation very badly. Oh, and 'Excessive Force' has got to be one of the most METAL songs ever recorded.
Diamond Head - Every serious metal fan knows them. I have several albums and I'm working on the rest.
King Diamond - I'll get into him eventually, but those vocals are an acquired taste even for a Halford fanboy.
Mercyful Fate - Ditto.
Budgie - How can anyone not love Budgie?
awesome...just awesome.
