Battlefield 3 May Not Reach Steam

It may have been a simple oversight but a recently-posted list of Battlefield 3 [http://www.amazon.com/Battlefield-3-Limited-Pc/dp/B002I0HJZO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1310400487&sr=8-3] digital distributors very conspicuously failed to mention Steam.

The GamersGate [http://www.battlefield.com/battlefield3/1/bf3-digital-retailers] will still be carrying the game.

The current 404 status of the list suggests that it might have been a mistake, but that's a little harder to swallow in light of the Crysis 2 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/111041-EA-Gets-Ready-to-Throw-Down-With-Steam-UPDATED] on Steam that went down a few weeks ago. The game disappeared very suddenly from the service, eventually leading to a vague and convoluted explanation about new business terms imposed by Valve that conflict with Crytek's deal with another distribution service; names weren't named but the assumption is that the offending deal is with none other than Origin.

EA's help site [http://support.ea.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5432/session/L3RpbWUvMTMxMDI0NjM1My9zaWQvbXRsUjZBeWs%3D] offers a bit more insight into the behind-the-scenes action that could be causing all the purse-swinging. "When a download service forbids publishers from contacting players with patches, new levels, items and other services - it disrupts our ability to provide the ongoing support players expect from us. At present, this is the case with only one download service," it says. "While EA offers its entire portfolio to this site, they have elected to not post many of our games."

The statement adds that EA hopes to find a "mutually agreeable solution" to the problem soon, but it's not beyond belief that the publisher isn't struggling too mightily to rectify the situation. There's already one high-profile Origin exclusive in the works - The Old Republic [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/110617-The-Old-Republic-Downloads-to-be-Exclusive-to-EAs-Origin-Service] - and Battlefield 3 promises to be big enough to attract a lot of gamers who would have otherwise defaulted to Steam. Whether or not that's a smart move remains to be seen, but it sure is an interesting one.

Eh. Not like I can run it, anyway, as a silly console gamer.

Still...kinda saw it coming with EA.

Well that makes things pretty simple then, doesn't it? I won't buy the game. I will not be forced to use a system I don't want to use. EA is going to shoot themselves in the foot with this one. No mod tools, exclusive pre-order bonuses, and no Steam? Good luck with overthrowing CoD you fuckin' morons.

Was wondering where the BF3 pre-order was on Steam. Ended up ordering a physical copy from Amazon - I can't be arsed with more than one digital distribution client running on my PC.

*shrug*

If Valve can make their own games a DRM exclusive then why can't EA? Only seems fair if they do.

Meh, Steam can suck it. I find their service buggy and flawed. Still, EA can suck it harder. I sure won't buy it from Origins either.

At this point, EA should just take their games library off Steam and onto their own client. Just get the shit over with.

I was talking to my mates about the possibility of this happening as soon as I heard about the deal with Crysis 2.

I really hope EA doesn't start snubbing steam, I know they're trying to promote their own DD, but I don't want to have to sign up to another bloody site.

And as much of a power house as steam is, if EA decide to pull all of their future releases from it, I think steam may be in a spot of trouble. EA is releasing some of the biggest titles.
I highly doubt Valve would be in trouble without EA , especially as they still deal with activision.

And yeah screw that origin thing, saw it on the e3 demos and it looked like eye rape. Plus one DD client is more than enough to deal with .

Plus its not like you can't just by a retail copy and add it to steam via the non steam game option to get the UI overlay to work. And yeah EA might be shooting themselves in the foot by stubbing the biggest DD service especially as many people don't trust EA like they do valve .

EA? Compete with Steam?

HA!

Don't get me wrong, Steam definitely needs a competitor, but I don't think EA will be able to do that well.

Reasons people use Steam: Lots of sales, relatively unobtrusive(well, compared to all other DRM solutions at least), it's easy to use, automatic patching(though this annoys some people. Understandable, especially when Steam downloads 5 patches at once), and a couple of other reasons.

EA will have to do that, and some of it they'll have to do better, if they want to compete with Steam. And judging from their past practices, they've done none of those things. Or at least none of those things well.

Games aren't the be-all-end-all(though they are a big factor) EA, the actual program(in this case Origins) has to be done well as well. Yeah, Steam was a festering pile of ass when it started, now it's pretty good. Lets see if you can do the same, or if you follow the path of Microsoft's GFWL platform. My money's on you going the latter route. Plus, I don't think EA is loved enough for people to download a brand new program JUST for their games.

I will say this though EA, if you can provide sales on par with Steam, make sure Origin is unobtrusive(and/or not having to run when playing a game, that'd be a huge plus), make it easier to use, provide automatic patching, and let me schedule when Origin can download stuff, I'll gladly use it.

Origin, eh?

Pro: Doesn't require client running in the background, you can uninstall the client and run the game.

Con: Some shit about having to pay up extra to download a purchased game six months after making said purchase.

Oh well.

I thought it was because EA was withholding patches from Steam that it was giving to its Origin and that violated a clause in the contract with Steam. I may be very wrong on this though.

Looks like you'll need Origin, regardless of disc or download version.

Its a 40 minute drive for some of us.

OT: Last I checked the latest Dragon Age DLC isn't available on steam either. Between that, Star Wars, Crysis and Battlefield its looking like EA is trying to get a array of exclusives to get people to install origin on their machines.
