Steam is hardly a monopoly. Digital distribution is just that, a method of distribution. Steam competes with everyone who sells PC and Mac games.twm1709 said:As much as I love Steam, a monopoly has never been good for the consumer.
That's true... but the last thing we want is another one on top of Steam. Where does it end? If every publisher starts up their own DD model, and they all stock only there own products, just now you'll end up with more software required to run any given game than there is game! It's bad enough that a bunch of games require GfWL in addition to your DD source programmes, but this is just downright silly.Andy Chalk said:I don't buy digital anyway so I don't really care but if I did, I can't imagine being upset about having to go to Origin instead of Steam. Because let's face it, when I "go to" either one, my ass never leaves my chair. So what's the big deal? (And please don't tell me it's all about not installing unwanted, resource-sucking software on your PC. You installed Steam, right?)
They already released that information? Christ almighty! 7 Gigs of voice overs!? I knew it was supposed to be +100000 hours, but wow... just wow.EverythingIncredible said:Interesting. Think they're trying to kill steam? I don't know.
On the topic of Origin exclusives though, I am fairly certain that The Old Republic is exclusive to Origin because of the massive download size. It's like 40 gigabytes and 7gb of it are voiceovers.
There will be no exclusive maps or anything of the likes. CoD Elite subscribers will just get the DLCs as they're released, and no extra benefits. Basically just the exact same content, but they're paying a monthly fee for that, and a bit extra to use a service which in no way makes the game unfair.SmashLovesTitanQuest said:-SNIP-
Not true. The reason Acivision doesnt have a digital distribution service yet is because they dont give the slightest fuck about the PC platform. In addition, guess what? COD Elite? Heard of it? Heard users of the service, which will be on all 3 platforms, get exclusive maps and such?
steam is more hten just a resource-sucking piece of software, its also a place to get massively good deals and be able to chat while staying in a game if you only have one monitorAndy Chalk said:I don't buy digital anyway so I don't really care but if I did, I can't imagine being upset about having to go to Origin instead of Steam. There is a slight issue with the fact that Steam does business with pretty much the entire world, while Origin, like EA Store, is happy to ignore the existence of a number of countries, making it impossible to actually use the service.Andy Chalk said:I don't buy digital anyway so I don't really care but if I did, I can't imagine being upset about having to go to Origin instead of Steam. Yeah,it's obvious that EA would want to whore out Origin as much as possible,so they pretty much would put all their games on Origin and leave Steam. I still think that EA is stupid for even contriving such an idea at the point in which Steam is a gaming juggernaut and pretty much has a monopoly on this kind of system.Onyx Oblivion said:Eh. Not like I can run it, anyway, as a silly console gamer.
Still...kinda saw it coming with EA.
