Battlefield 3 Will Require Origin

Some people in the last BF3 thread were swearing blind that you wouldnt need Origin.
I asked if they had an official source, but they were strangely silent, so gutted, pwned, told you so, I 0wn j00, and other similar statements to them

This make sense on EA's part really, if they want to get more people to use their service they need to start forcing them.
That is how steam first ended up on my computer when I got Half-Life 2.

I dont think the no steam and having to use Origin will help sales, but I still expect this game to be big.
Heres a rough barometer of UK interest anyway.

I've used EA download manger and it was awful, and I've used Origin and it took me all of 1 download to realize it's just a reskinned version of EADM. So they've lost me as a customer.

It doesn't change the fact that the console version will be severely cut down compared to the PC one. If you're fine with that, then fine, enjoy it. I'm not going to pay 60 dollars for the console version for less than the PC one.

It's not really a huge shock, given the online-focused nature of the game, but another client running in the background, sucking up CPU cycles and RAM, is not something that's likely to make gamers very happy. A lot of people have declared, sincerely or otherwise, that if they can't buy Battlefield 3 on Steam they won't buy it at all, and I wouldn't be too surprised if this has a similar impact.

Origin only has to be running when you install the game, other than that it leaves you alone. It doesn't have to be running to launch titles, so there really is not wasted CPU cycles or RAM.

I love all the shit fits being thrown around. You the gamer brought this on yourself when you accepted steam. Steam was shit at first and yes has gotten better, but still don't get pissed at EA for trying to get a piece of the pie that Valve has been taking for years. They are just providing what the customers seem to want and they yank their products from steam to help launch their platform. Simple business 101, if your product is already offered somewhere else on a medium customers already have setup then simply introducing your own is just redundant because no one will install another redundant program. So enjoy the future of gaming you have so graciously ushered in to your HD's.

I was planning on buying this for my 360 anyway ^_^
Steam already ruined Dawn of War 2 so there is no way in hell I am letting EA of all half baked, barely functional software put a Steam like program on my PC.

They can't even put out patches to fix their half finished games, do they really think I am trusting them with my bank details and giving them access to my rigs deepest regions?

Activision might be C**ts in the purest form but they have the decency to NOT force this crap on us and in all fairness their software isn't nearly as broken as EA's is.

Okay, when I saw BF3 was coming out, I was like "cool, should be pretty good. Maybe I'll pick it up a few months after release when the prices have gone down".

Then, I saw it had been developed on PC, and I thought "perhaps I'll buy it on release; pay a few extra quid to show I approve".

Then I saw the screenshots and gameplay footage, and I decided "blimey, okay I'm pre-ordering this as soon as pay day comes around!"

Then I saw they were cutting it from Steam.
"Fair play," I thought, "I don't blame them for not wanting to put free cash in the pockets of one of their biggest rivals, although it would have been nice if they'd just admitted to that being the reason rather than invent this crap about Steam not being supportive enough".

Then I saw that it would require Origin. A dick move on EA's part, but unsurprising. Again, I was only very slightly put off - not enough to rethink pre-ordering the game.
"So what if EA want something to kickstart their new online service. They certainly need something to compete with Valve's behemoth of an equivalent! Besides, the competition could possibly drive down the prices of Steam games now that it has something similar to compete with... so if Origin has competitive game prices and is as functional as Steam, then why not try it?"

Then I saw the introduction price for BF3 on Origin. £40 for the standard edition. The Limited edition (which I think is £10 on top of that price on Origin) is over a tenner cheaper than that standard edition, on Amazon. At this point, I slapped myself for ever even thinking about giving EA another chance. On several occasions they've let us down: not patching far too many of their games to any standard quick enough (ie. BF2 was unplayable between patch 1.2 and 1.4, with a gap of several months between each; also the PC issues for Dead Space 1 haven't been fixed though they've obviously been identified because they are absent from Dead Space 2, etc, etc.)... and those ridiculous advertising campaigns (covered here: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/extra-credits/2794-An-Open-Letter-to-EA-Marketing ), to name a couple of those occasions.
I don't like EA. I never have. I don't like their marketing and business strategies. I don't like their approach to both the consumer and the competition, as well as the medium in which they create. This is just yet another thing to hold against them, in my opinion, and if it means I don't buy BF3 - at least not until it comes down in price as a physical copy - then that's my loss and EA's.

This approach didn't work particularly well for Rockstar, or Games For Windows Live; I'm genuinely curious why EA thinks it's going to be the exception. Because it's bigger, and can't be ignored? Because taking its toys away from Steam and going home in a snit is an expression of its authority in some executive's mind?

Is there any word on if this even requires a separate install on top of installing Battlefield 3, or are we simply logged into their servers? If it turns out to be the latter then it's no different from what we do already in games like Bad Company 2. If it requires installing any software specifically for Origin in addition to the game, then I'll pass. I don't feel like putting up with a potential resource hog and Origins inevitable growing pains.

Another thing I'd like to know is if a connection is required to play single player? If that's the case then I'll happily not buy anymore EA games (not that many were worth buying anyway). If not then we can at least be thankful for that much.

I think we need to learn a bit more about what requiring a connection to Origin entails before damning them completely.

I can appreciate that Steam once did the same thing to garner support for itself as a digital distribution service. But EA are gambling heavily if they think that forcing people to use your service in the hopes of luring people to adopt it as their primary digital distribution service is something that's going to work in a market where there are already several competing download systems, as it's more likely to be interpreted as simply an additional headache. People don't need to be introduced to the wonders of digital distribution anymore, as Steam did, however heavy-handedly several years ago. What EA should be doing is offering a MORE user friendly experience than Valve.

And while they're at it, they should turn down the thermostat in hell...

I wasn't going to buy it anyway, but I don't see what the big deal is with EA wanting to run their own client software.

As several people have stated before me, Valve does exactly the same thing with Steam - what makes them so special? EA don't have as good a standing within the gaming community as Valve, sure, but that doesn't mean they are incapable of providing an efficient online service.

Also, if your computer can run BF3, it can run Origin just fine. Deal with it.

Ugh does this mean i will need it for mass effect 3? I really don't want to install it just so i can play a game, at least with EA download manager you can choose to not install it during setup.

I may have more than enough power to run all modern games on high but i've always liked my computer running as little as possible in the background (and i know alot of PC gamers are like this even if they have top of the line hardware), for example i only have iplayer, steam and coretemp running in the background which aren't nesscary for my system to run.
