I could ask the thing about Killzone 2, Infamous, Dragon Age Origins and so on..
I have to say, I love your avatar.

It's all how each person perceives it. You don't like some ppluar titles as you stated, I like one of them.

Everyone is different, which is why it annoys me when someone says something just sucks outright.

People need to stop stating opinion/preference as solid fact.
This avatar has given me alot of trouble on these forums...but it's too awesome to change.
I don't mind if someone doesn't like the game. But atleast give reasons why instead of saying "It suxorz!"
It's given you trouble? Oh well. I think it's awesome!

Yeah, those are the worst. When someone cannot back up a statement with any substance it annoys the heck out of me.

From what I have gathered playing the game... she's sexy in a direct in your face campy balls to the walls hello nurse sort of way. Some people don't like that, other people find it to be campy, like a burlesque show. I look at it like that. It's -rediculous.- They're not trying to subtly suggest she's a sex object, they're blatantly wallowing in it, almost to the point of satire.

See, that's the point that it starts working... is when it stops taking itself seriously (and really, it doesn't, the first time you fight a Joy is a perfect example...) and it's just supposed to mindblow you with the awesome and the style of it.

Plus, it's good to see a sexual image of a woman that isn't 'look at large breasts'... in terms of her proportions she's there to accentuate other aspects of femininity that isn't just Gainax effect (hips and legs and lips)

Given it's extremely positive reviews and my having money to burn I decided to buy it.

It's strong to say I'm not enjoying it, it's okay, not the best game I've bought, but not the worst. however, I do feel that some of the reviews are glowing more because of the references to gaming nostalgia and the generally crazy style.

Personally, I agree with the OP, the game is visually and audibly unbalanced it throws far too much at your senses and with a lack of defined controls it's certainly difficult to get the sounds to a level where you can hear everything clearly without just turning the music off, where you're still left with a multitude of same level sound effects fighting for your concentration and visuals that you'd have to be a humming bird to comprehend what is happening in a typical fight. It's not vastly challenging and can be button bashed, though I haven't finished it yet, busy life and all that.

However, that's not my main complaint, I can get by with that because it's a growing trend in games and something that few get right (MW and MW2 being something that is well balanced, largely helped by Hans Zimmer). My main issue is its gratuitous overuse of sexuality, I'm 26 and it comes across as a little immature some of the things the designers have made her do or say. I can imagine the voice actor reading the lines and thinking 'are they serious?'

But, everything has its audience and opinions are like arseholes (everyone has one) so I don't begrudge people who love it, much the same as I don't begrudge Halo fans or MW haters.

Watching the escapist's review of Bayonetta today compelled me to play a demo of it that I had from an xbox magazine demo disk. I hadn't tried it so far because, frankly, I wasn't interested, but the positive review it got here combined with its metacritic score of 90, made me want to try it.

It was, to put it bluntly, terrible. I never understood how exactly the main character was supposed to be attractive with her odd proportions and preposterous outfit/hairdo, and seeing her in action only made it worse. The combat was completely clusterfucky, and the music was so bad that I had to turn it off. I played both levels of the demo and was completely unimpressed.

My question is this. Why does everybody like it so much? A few of my friends tried the demo before me and didn't like it either, and the almost universal acclaim it's had is utterly baffling to me? Am I looking at it the wrong way, or is it just not aimed at me?
It kind of sounds like you may have been biased against the game partly due to your expectation that the protagonist was supposed to be attractive to you. Not everyone is turned on by pretty boys who don't wear shirts under their red leather jackets like Dante, either, or scarred sides of beef like Jack Cayman/Kratos/War/Marcus Fenix but that isn't a deal breaker for their games. In the future, you would do well to put the looks of female characters out of you mind the same way you might for male characters.

There's also the whole phenomena of Hype Aversion to deal with, as well. I'm sure you've seen it plenty on this site with all of the heaping helpings of Halo hate.

That said, perhaps the demo doesn't do enough to get across the point that you should not take any of it seriously, either, if it wasn't enough of a hint to look at what crew made it.

Then again, if you didn't care for the likes of Mad World or Devil May Cry, even if the demo had started with the EggMan's funeral or the highway battle that all takes place in hyper-time, you wouldn't get into it.

Just because someone finds combat shit, does not mean they are shit.
In a game based almost entirely on personal skill, finding the combat "clusterfucky" generally means that the player hasn't been able to take control of the battle.

Which, yes, means they are shit at it.

Bayonetta requires you to take control of the enemies in order to succeed, using your range of moves and using Witch Time. When you can read the combat effectively, which if you are finding it "clusterfucky" you are evidently not doing and take control of it, then you can have an opinion on whether it's any good or not.

I kinda liked DMC. It was frustratingly hard though. But I could go through that again with a hot chick.

If you think the sexuality of the game is uncalled for, perhaps Muscle March on the wii might be your thing.

The gameplay is supposed to be a button masher, cool things going on, with madness and chaos, that's the point. Its not a flaw.

I'm too busy with the pulse pounding action to care about Bayonetta's appearance.

I dunno. I didn't think the game was that appealing either. I might rent it for the heck of it, but we shall see what the future holds

I have the game at home via GF, and while it can be quite fun and intense at times, it can very quickly turn into cluster-fuck mode. It's very easy to lose track of what's going on, not to mention the attacks enemies use seem to reduce a decent chunk of health. Also, the story and cinematics are INSUFFERABLE. They honestly remind me of MGS4, but unlike MGS4 which had (in my opinion) decent writing and a story that I gave a shit about, everything is DRAGGED out and unnecessary and rather convoluted, as if the developers were under some rule that they had to fill the disc with as much data as possible. It's definitely a game worth playing, but I'm not ready to rescind the title from God of War just yet. I do need to get back into the game though, because I need to clear out my queue in time for No More Heroes 2.

I actually quite like the music on Bayonetta.

Other than that its the first game in, er, about a year that I've actually enjoyed enough to pay for.

Also, you're either supposed to find Bayonetta attractive, or laugh at how hard she's trying to seduce the player. You're taking the game too seriously from what I'm guessing.
Yeah, Bayonetta is so balls to the wall silly with the whole "sex in your face" thing that it actually works pretty well with the really overdone and quite camp fight sequences.

Bayonetta is very much like it's sibling but with a sex change.

I haven't played it but my fiancé was about to rush out to get it when LoveFilm saved us the £40 cost by mailing it to us from the rental list. He enjoyed the Devil May Cry games whilst I did not, however I felt compelled to at least watch how it plays out.

Before you ask or even point fingers screaming at me like the devil has possessed me NO being female doesn't make me dislike this game. I infact found Bayonetta rather amusing with her insane and unreal body shape, never did I feel the need to scream "oh my god this is sexist" or the likes.

Anyway I found parts of the game rather funny. When I saw her first use her climax move we both looked shocked for a moment before bursting into laughter. I mean come on she gets naked and no one around gives a damn? Brilliant. Even the little kid who hangs out with you isn't shocked by her sexual moves and nudity. One time my partner did the taunt where she gets on the floor with her legs wide open and by accident the girl was between her legs. I couldn't stop laughing it was just mad!

If you like how Devil May Cry plays and how it somewhat laughs at itself for being so crazy then this you most certainly will enjoy. Oh and of course don't expect some deeply thought out storyline. I figured out what would happen fairly quickly. My partner also found it rather hard and embarrassed at his scores when he first played through it, but didn't stop him enjoying it.

If DMC wasn't your style of gaming or you disliked it for whatever reason then this game probably won't suit you. Also won't suit people who are easily shocked by sexual things. For example whenever you need to use something pole-like to turn something she'll wrap herself around it and pole dance, not simply turn it, she'll do whatever she can to show off her sexy moves and grooves. Again not you're thing? Don't touch this game.

Maybe the game just isn't for you. I don't care for that type of game either, but I keep my mouth shut since I have nothing good to say.
Not all games are one size fit all...there is a reason I hate Halo and half a billion 7 year olds love it. We have different tastes.
Wow. A sane person.

...and WE DON'T LIKE YOUR KIND IN HERE.

It's just not aimed at you. Did you like other beat-em-ups like God of War or Devil May Cry? If you did, then I dunno what to say.

It's called: Marketing.
It doesn't matter if the game is bad- they still want you to buy it!
Speaking of Marketing although I couldn't get myself interested in playing Bayonetta the TV advert works a treat.

Though that's not the UK one I ever saw. It has a review by Nuts magazine which use to make me laugh. Guess it's their audience ;)

And just think, you haven't even experienced the revolting dialoge or the ridiculous Italian and black stereotypes.

Bayonetta was disappointing. And it was from Platinum games. And they made the excellent Madworld. So I'm saying, "They made this game!?" Madworld was far better.

I think that post sums up the point of the thread, which is: no accounting for taste. Madworld had me bored to tears within 2 levels, and I only played that far to see if the game would ever switch things up. I personally found my time with Bayonetta to be quite enjoyable, which was something of a surprise after being so turned off by Devil May Cry 2 and 3. Bayonetta strikes me as a rather well-polished, fun little title with a few tweaks of innovation (everyone loved the zero-g parts in Dead Space, but no one seems to talk about the "witch-walk" fights in Bayonetta...seems odd to me) on a well-tread genre, while Madworld just seemed like a failure to execute a simple concept. A failure with a very appealing aesthetic wrapped around it, but a failure nonetheless.

As countless people have already said, people simply like different things.
