As for computer games, I'd say Nethack. It's about the only one I do get back to every few years (even though I suck way too much to ever have ascended).

And boardgames, Diplomacy. Too bad it takes so long to play.

Anyone that said FF7 is wrong. Not only is it not even REMOTELY the best final fantasy game(6 is, even though I prefer 4,) it has not aged well, at, all. Everything up to and including 6 aged very well, they are what they are, but 7's polygon thing? Yeah, didn't age well. 8+ aged reasonably well.

Now that that is out of the way, The best game ever, hands down, has to be Chrono Trigger. Music, atmosphere, a time traveling game that doesn't suck, old school JRPG style combat, brilliant characters, Dinosaurs, robots. It just did everything right for a JRPG.

These things are my opinion, and I will probably stick with them. I don't hate 7, but to call it the best game ever just doesn't make any sense to me.

I don't mean the actual meaning, I meant how can a game be perfect (in general)? Because as far as I'm concerned, there is no such thing and so is completely pointless to bring up in the first place if this can not be answered.

To find a game with the least amount of flaws as closest to perfect is missing the point I find when looking for the best. I reckon looking for the strengths would be more effective.

Personally I'd say Portal. As far as the game I think is the most influential, like what had the most impact? Probably either Super Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time. I definitely think they defined the standards for 3D gaming, and look, others would have done it later, but they did it first, and arguably, did it best.

But yeah, personally I'd say Portal. Maaaaybe Half-Life 2 but that ages worse every year I've found.

It's not really a game.

And before you tell me "ohhh it is a game it is" keep in mind this is what makes it so great. It is literally a sandbox, and that's what makes it so good. It's also what makes it not a game. There aren't any rules or goals beyond player-defined ones and while it does have gameplay, it is, in the end, a construction set. Digital LEGO. You wouldn't call Second Life a "game," you wouldn't call Minecraft a game, but their genius lies within that. ...well. Minecraft's lie within that, anyway.

Dark Souls. It took the best qualities of all the best games ever made, and took them to a whole new level. Plus, I've never played a game I felt was more rewarding.

I would want to say Bioshock too... maybe. But the game had too many problems, and way too easy.
