Half Life 2 isn't even the best Half Life, so how could it be the best game ever?
Pffft. HL had the better story but the design, atmosphere, weapons, game play and challenges are improved in HL2.

The original or the remake? Or both?
Original.
The remake was utter crap and had lost all its charm.
Agreed. It's funny how they took down the contrast in the remake and now it looks kinda grey in some areas.

Then when they brightened up OoT on DS it looks too cartoony and the mood in a lot of the game is screwed with the amatuar lighting.

You guys sure have a funny way of pronouncing Devil May Cry 3.
Someone always makes that joke in these threads and I still find it funny.

I haven't played any of them yet, should I start with 3 or the beginning. I want a good intro to the series.

Eh... I think you do. SotC is a good game, but it's completely understandable why many people out there wouldn't enjoy the experience at all. So, please, elaborate.

Original is amazing enough. It is certainly one of the best, if not the best 2D platformers of all time.

You either answer:
A.Half Life 2
B.Planescape Torment
C.Deus Ex
Indeed, I was just going to say "either Deus Ex or Planescape Torment, even though they look like shit."

3 would be perfect, as it's a prequel. You can buy the first 3 in a nice HD collection. They are all awesome. 2 gets a bit of flak for being a pretty uninspired sequel, but I enjoyed it well enough.

EDIT: "A bit of flak" is an understatement.

I'm guessing he meant because of all the praise it got before and how often it's still mentioned that everyone would know any way.

I agree though. I reckon it's a great game but there are a few things that stop it becoming the greatest experience for me. Everyone bangs on about pulling down that giant snake thing, but I didn't find that challenging at all, I don't know if it even attacks. And the last 2 colossi are rediculous when it comes to reaching weak spots.

Might try to play it again, since it's been so long and I've almost forgotten it all.

Have you ever played Super Metroid? Because if you love 2D games then I strongly recommend it.

Good to hear. I love it when they come in HD collections, it makes my shelf look neat and I save time and money usually :)

Propably not count as a real game but; Katawa Shoujo.
Never had such an emotional rollercoaster anywhere, not in life, nor in other games.

As for 'real' games umm... Mass Effect as a whole series (yes even ME3 for all you haters).

Hands down, Deadly Premonition.
It has everything you could ever want.

Weird ass story? Check.
Bad controls? Check.
Poorly chosen audio? Definitely
Wacky characters? Yessir
Hours of laughter and tears? You bet!
I hope they don't ruin all that with the remake.

Actually, my favorite is Super Mario RPG Seven Stars.
But Deadly Premonition is a close second =P

Really? It was the start up that sucked me in.

Nothing seemed clever about it all?

I guess I should ask people what type of game interests them before recommending.

The problem with this old chestnut is whether you take the date of the game into account or not. If you do then my answer would possibly be System Shock 2 (yes I was one of the handful of people who actually bought it at release thank you very much) although it did have respawning enemies which is a "feature" I've always hated. If we're not taking date into account then it would be something recent, because games have IMO gotten a lot better over the years, so probably Dishonored for me. I just love that game.

It's clearly Grim Fandango, it has the best story line of any game ever, best written dialogue, best characters, best soundtrack, best visuals, best atmosphere, best setting... I could go on forever.

Oh well played sir. I love Grim Fandango.
I don't think there's a "best" game but yes, Grim Fandango *is* fantabulous :D When you say "best visuals", while the design and aesthetic are (near enough) second-to-none, the 3D graphics themselves haven't really held up that well... Don't get me wrong, they don't detract from the game - and I have quite nostalgic feelings regarding them - but they might put off new players a little, which is a shame. A lot of "early-days 3D" games are similar :/

Haven't played Planescape: torment, but I can confirm that Deus Ex looks like ass and hasn't especially aged well. Yes it's got lots of cool qualities, but keeping up with the times is not one of them.

Either Tabletop D&D or Warhammer 40k. I personally like the combat system in 40k better, but D&D is easier to understand, not to mention is a lot more recognizable. Although the setting in 40k is a lot more in-depth and complex. Actually, yeah, I think I'd have to go with Warhammer 40k Tabletop Roleplay. What? I didn't hear anyone say it had to be a video game, and Tabletop games are legitimately awesome. Completely wide open sandbox, hundreds of hours of playability, not to mention that you can do literally anything reasonable for your character, so there's no issues with limitations of controls. I mean, in my first ever Dark Heresy Warhammer 40k Campaign, I started out as a lowly guardsmen from a feral world that was kidnapped, given a gun, and expected to fight; and by the end I had a flying Motorcycle, Giant Las-Cannons and Machine Rocket launchers, chainswords, psyblades, and so on. not to mention that I was strong enough to throw an elephant at people as a legitimate attack.

Throughout that one campaign I did everything from Jumping of cliffs hundreds of feet high after shooting off a man's leg from 100 meters away, Helped with orbital bombardment on a planet, opened a door with a gunhammer (killing 3 people in the process), coming back from a successful suicide mission via flying motorcycle, pulling out a pair of sunglasses from the warp in order to look cooler while coming back from said suicide mission, killing a fighter drone with a flintlock pistol while attempting to get back from a certain suicide mission, lassoing a servitor with some rope I happened to have on me while I was flying through space after a suicide mission. (It was a busy day for me) There was even some slower economic based challenges like building a factory to provide supplies and profit, rallying a city to come to our aid, and even building a combination hotel/casino/restaurant/massage parlor/something else. Hell, there was even a stealth element to it. Despite my large stature and heavily armed nature, I snuck into a fancy dinner party completely inconspicuously. I simply learned how to cook some basic meals in the weeks leading up to the party. Then I caught a massive shark that the DM might've expected me to use as a signature dish, which I did, but I also used it to smuggle in a lot of my weapons, and even one of my teammates as well. And I never once broke the rules of the game.

I'll admit that the single-player is non-existant, and you usually want a group of at least 4 people to play with, but I got almost 200 hours out of that single campaign, and there wasn't any farming or grinding, or any other repetitive annoying stuff. Oh, and at one point I built a gun that fired Shurikens and Lightning. Then I mounted it to Flaming Chainsaw Gun-chucks.

Very well, I dont want to get another warning for a low content post. Just about every element of SOTC is perfect, the graphics arent the best but this is the PS2 we are talking about here. But still, the art direction more than makes up for it, the game world is a character unto itself. Even without a day/night cycle, towns and villages and tons of NPCs and quests, its a place that is a joy to explore. I especially like the desert areas, they are by far the best looking deserts Ive seen in a videogame. Just as the narrow mountain passes look cold and damp from lack of sunlight, the desert appears to be extremely hot. The design of the ruins are spectacular, they feel ancient and forbidden just as the whole land does. The lack of any living thing other than lizards and birds speak volumes about the cursed nature of the place. A primeval, cursed land that looks as if it wavers between the real world and wherever we go when we dream.

Also, SOTC without very little dialog creates an emotional resonance that is unmatched by even the most verbose of RPGs. And thats not even touching on the utterly unique combat sequences or the incredible music.

It's the complete opposite for me, Hl2 had the better story but Hl had much better gameplay.
