for me it's ocarina of time. I was a wee lad (11) when it came out, I got it for Christmas and just remember abandoning my mountain of toys to play it. the sense of wonder I got when I finally made it onto hyrule field will stay with me forever. the subsequent scrapping of my pants when it got dark and the skeletons coming out of the ground will stay with me for awhile as well :-/

honourable mentions:
dishonored
minecraft
eve online
zelda: alttp
morrowind
portal 2 (merchant FTW)
BG2
BF2
dark/demon souls
FF8
resi 1 gcube remake

I'm sure ill think of more

Dark Souls for sure. They basically deconstructed the genre of third-person action rpgs, cut out all the bad stuff, and then perfected and polished what mattered, and cranked the difficulty up to 11.

So, fellow escapists, what in your opinion is the best game ever?
Xenogears.

The story, the music, the characters, and the setting are just... amazing. The amount of research and true genius that went into the game is staggering.

I could elaborate, but others have been there and done it better before me. Ask if ye desire a link.

I'm going with Minecraft.

There are a million different ways to play it and all of them are equally fun.

The best game ever is Starcraft.

Strategy games are probably my weakest area of gaming next to fighters but god damn it I always have fun with Starcraft.

I always thought that Ocarina of Time was the best game I ever played. It's probably not perfect but I found the dungeon design and gameplay to be consistently endorphin producing levels of enjoyable.

No you shut up.

I will never leave this game alone!
Oooh, this is a close second for me. I still maintain it is the best platformer ever made.

No one has mentioned Hunter which means that no one has answered the question correctly and I win!

Released on the Amiga in 1991 it was a sand box game, in 3D and had some pretty special AI, every time you played it was different game. I have many fond memories of driving over cows in tanks or swimming away from a shark in mad panic, often seconds later.

If you're not old enough to have played his game you can't answer the topic as far as I'm concerned.

Two pages... and only one person said Skyrim...

considering that almost one year ago, the Escapist overwhelmingly voted Skyrim the GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME.

Maybe that had something to do with the game being released two weeks prior, and people were voting in between sessions of playing... I dunno.

And yes, for those that know me, I will bring this up every single time.

OT: I would say for me it is either Tactics Ogre or Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
Ah yes, I remember you calling that back then. :D

OT: Personally, I'd have to say probably Final Fantasy IX or Okami.

Such a game has yet to be made.

Seriously, every game I'd like to give that distinction to is marred by something that just falls short of my probably too high expectations.

But those that come close (in my humble opinion) are:

"Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind" once all the patches to improve the combat, fix the journaling and eliminate those damn Cliff Racers have been applied.

"Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" probably because of the nostalgia factor. I grew up in the 80's and spent time in Miami. Plus it was a great balance of action and RPG elements and was just a blast to play.

"Assassin's Creed II" is also a wonderful blend of action and RPG, plus the immersive graphics and soundtrack just make me FEEL like I'm in Renaissance Italy.

All three of these are games I can just play over and over again...

Has not been made yet but the best one in existence for me is FFVII without a doubt its still the only game to completely change my mind on an entire genre (RPG) and go back to games I had dismissed as rubbish (especially earlier FF games) and reappraise them. Without this game I would probably still dislike RPGs Japanese or western. Its also one of the very few RPGs I can play more than once and still enjoy, or in my case 11 times and still enjoy it so far.

Crash Team Racing (best kart racing game ever)*snip*
I agree completely I have been telling people that for years but they dont want to see the light well some of them dont. I absolutely love that game and still play it with friends to this day, Mario may have beaten Crash when it comes to platforming but when it comes to karting Crash has his number. I Just wish there was a sequel. (no there are no sequels you are mistaken)

Obviously people are going to disagree with me because everyone has their own opinion but my answer is Skyrim.

Silly Escapist.

The thing is you're thinking about this on personal preference and your favorite game. My favorite game of all time is TES: IV but i know it isnt the best ever. The best game ever from a design stand point is Yoshi's Island for the SNES.

Prove me wrong.

Edit: anyone else noticing way more "I have no avatar" avatars around. Is this a glitch or something?

To me it comes down to Persona 4, Dark Souls, and Deus Ex: HR.

These 3 games have this "It" factor that no other games I've played have nowadays. They brought out emotions other than "fun/happiness" which is very hard to pull off. In other words they're more deserving of the title of "experiences" then to be labeled as "video games".

Plus in all my time playing these games I have yet to come across a single glitch, so I guess the tie breaker will be which one has a glitch first. :)

Company of Heroes.

Not only was it's PC gamer's GOTY 2006, It has aged excellently. It's still incredibly beautiful and the gameplay is still as smooth and fun as it was 2006.
Apart from the huge path finding issue it still is pretty amazing (i was very excited when they announced CoH 2)

For me the best game ever made would be Metal Gear Solid 3. It has an amazing story filled with twists, action and emotions. But the gameplay was also very interesting with it's wannabe survival approach and the bigger emphasis on "stealth".
