Has not been made yet but the best one in existence for me is FFVII without a doubt its still the only game to completely change my mind on an entire genre (RPG) and go back to games I had dismissed as rubbish (especially earlier FF games) and reappraise them. Without this game I would probably still dislike RPGs Japanese or western. Its also one of the very few RPGs I can play more than once and still enjoy, or in my case 11 times and still enjoy it so far.

I agree completely I have been telling people that for years but they dont want to see the light well some of them dont. I absolutely love that game and still play it with friends to this day, Mario may have beaten Crash when it comes to platforming but when it comes to karting Crash has his number. I Just wish there was a sequel. (no there are no sequels you are mistaken)

Obviously people are going to disagree with me because everyone has their own opinion but my answer is Skyrim.

Silly Escapist.

The thing is you're thinking about this on personal preference and your favorite game. My favorite game of all time is TES: IV but i know it isnt the best ever. The best game ever from a design stand point is Yoshi's Island for the SNES.

Prove me wrong.

Edit: anyone else noticing way more "I have no avatar" avatars around. Is this a glitch or something?

To me it comes down to Persona 4, Dark Souls, and Deus Ex: HR.

These 3 games have this "It" factor that no other games I've played have nowadays. They brought out emotions other than "fun/happiness" which is very hard to pull off. In other words they're more deserving of the title of "experiences" then to be labeled as "video games".

Plus in all my time playing these games I have yet to come across a single glitch, so I guess the tie breaker will be which one has a glitch first. :)

Company of Heroes.

Not only was it's PC gamer's GOTY 2006, It has aged excellently. It's still incredibly beautiful and the gameplay is still as smooth and fun as it was 2006.
Apart from the huge path finding issue it still is pretty amazing (i was very excited when they announced CoH 2)

For me the best game ever made would be Metal Gear Solid 3. It has an amazing story filled with twists, action and emotions. But the gameplay was also very interesting with it's wannabe survival approach and the bigger emphasis on "stealth".

Zelda 2 Adventure of Link - this game kicked my ass all up and down my teenage years. holy crap.
Crusader (both no remorse and no regret), these games will be missed
Descent - my very first FPS (before that I played Quest for glory 1)
Terra Nova - was hard as fuck till you got the tesla cannon then is was like cutting butter with a T-Rex on fire

OT: these my favorite games (not al of them) and I am just giving brief issues with them that I miss.

EDIT: I am going to be ripped to shred for this, but WTF is minecraft?

To me, there's one that still holds up after decades. It's so underrated and unknown that I consider it my secret little diamond.

Little Samson (NES)

It has a simple storyline, great atmosphere, reasonable difficulty curve, it was one of the first games that forced you to choose a character wisely, you could choose your own path to reach your goal AND it was a platformer. Plus, the characters are fun and balanced when compared to each other. Take one of the four characters out and your team will be severely crippled.
And great music too.

Just go to youtube and check it out yourself. Do it, go on.

OMG! You choose Skyrim! What the fuck is wrong with you? Bloody oath! My grandmother could of made a better choice and she doesn't even like video games. BLLLAAARGGGGWWWAAAAAARRRRBBBbbbbbblllllllleeeeeecay nuff nuff

Any way, opinions will always be just opinions until someone explains them or backs them up. C'mon, tell us why you choose Skyrim.

Honestly, I thought it was great at the beginning and I loved the detailed crystal cave part, but unfortunately it was easy to trick the computer opponents, and I found it disappointing that I could easily create over-powered armour and get over-powered skills. I'd still be playing it if it wasn't for that which is a shame.

You shouldn't make assumptions why people pick certain games, even if they say it's their favourite there maybe a very damn good reason for that. Have some faith in people, not everyone is ignorant in every way that they can't have a legit reasons for their choices.

As for Yoshi's Island, it's a great game and not only for design either. However, I picked games like Metroid Prime and Half-Life 2 not only because they have amazing design, game play, and what not, but because the challenges in them are the equivalent to awesome expensive action movies. Whether it's pulling down battle ships from the sky with big guns, racing through rough terrain and avoiding falling structures with big explosions, and of course encountering interesting scenarios such as trying to avoid stepping on the ground so you don't awaken the monsters below or searching through new territory to find everyone's been killed by a new powerful enemy. They just make the whole experience more interesting. Of course the quality of those events are usually determined on how much freedom you have and the special effects, which you get plenty of in HL2 and MP.

I agree that HL2 is one of the best games ever. However it seems like most of the decisions here are based on what games people loved the most, obviously that's a big aspect of games but when asked what the best is you have to be a bit more objective. Even I gave into that bias, its impossible to pick the best of so many genres so I just picked the game I loved the most which I feel is perfect design wise.

In my opinion the best game ever made is Super Metroid. Everything about that game is just perfect. The atmosphere, music, exploration, world design, combat, controls and graphics are simply fantastic, and it is still just as good to playthrough today as it was 18 years ago. Truly a game that will withstand the test of time forever.

So, fellow escapists, what in your opinion is the best game ever?

Edit: Should have wrote this earlier. I'm curious as to your personal best experience of a game ever. Not, the must be best game by default due to factors ect'.
You know what's funny is years ago when that first came out I wouldn't even try it. I didn't like the name. I thought adding, 'super' to the name was silly and so for a few years I ignored it. Then one day, I forget where I was but I played it for the first time. I was just like.. wow.. and I have to agree, I've never quite felt that way toward any other game since (except maybe SoTN). I even went back and played it a year ago and it still looks great and feels fun to me.

I would have to give the vote to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night however. It's basically the same type of game although I prefer a creepy castle with great graphics and music over a creepy planet with great graphics and music. It really just comes down to personal preference for me honestly. (that and I was just playing it a day ago.)

You're always going to get most people just yelling a name or reviews saying the story is good (literally, that's all some reviews say, even Yahtzee goes into more detail than that!), but this isn't a serious thread at all.

Meh, I don't find it impossible. I just pick the games that covers all important aspects well (game play, design, etc.) and has the most exciting challenges to go with it. Well, it takes a lot longer than that. Of course, I can't prove of that beyond a shadow of a doubt. I'm just not that good at explaining, but I'm confident in my choices. I feel I should play some more of the popular titles before declaring the winner though. Persona 4 and Baldurs Gate 2 are next on my list.

I doubt my post is going to change your mind I mean it really is just an opinion. I don't think you can objectively call a game the best ever.

I chose Skyrim because its world is incredibly immersive. I love that you can do pretty much anything you want. It's a very replaybable game if you like to rp like I do. Then of course there are the mods. They add even more replay value and though I don't personally use very many of them, they still add to the game. The combat is decent for melee (I really don't mind it. It feels weighty and gritty to me). The combat is good for mages. The combat is really fun (although op) for assassins. The world is beautiful and I like the low fantasy style. I feel like I'm playing an open world lOTRO game. Keep in mind that this is all my opinion and yours will probably differ somewhere along there (or maybe everywhere).

Mate, the point here is not to convince any one, it's too express ourselves, so let loose like me.

I can never agree with in full, NEVER WITH ANYONE! It's just impossible since there are so many parts to these games some of us think are perfect while others think they could be improved in some way.

I agree that Skyrims world was incredably immersive while still challenging, it does allow more freedom than most games, plus replayable as long as it's challenging, mods are always awesome and should be allowed for all games and I did like the combat but I think it and the computers need a little more work. Not too far off, 'ey.

I don't think it's impossible to pick a best whatever as long as we know what it's the best of. This clearly isn't the place to do that, but there are many hardcore debates always going on about these things and you'll be quite surprise how convincing they actually are.
