metroid prime had god awful arthritis-inducing controls. Would have been almost a contender for one of the greatest if only it had a traditional first person control scheme. Super Metroid on the other hand is one of a handful of perfect games.

That is so unbelievably hard for me.

There is no perfect game, and any time I try to name one I come up with so many complaints.

Fallout 3 comes the closest for me. I guess because every fault I come up with is because of something I love about the game.

The story is lame, but it isn't about the story.
Glitches, the game is huge glitches are bound to be there.

I honestly think for now it holds my number one spot.

Half-Life 2. That's it, end of discussion, we're done here, everyone leave the thread immediately because there is no further purpose to this discussion. Go ahead and shut the site down too, because we really are just done here to THAT extent. Might as well close down the entire internet while you're at it.

In all seriousness, yeah, HL2. It gets everything right and nothing wrong. Perfect game.
Well there is one thing wrong with HL2. It is unfinished in the most literal sense of the word. Okay maybe that isn't the games fault but it is certainly the developers fault.

Here's how I think about these things: The best is pretty much the same as my favorite. Since this stuff is all subjective, I don't think there exists a game that is actually "better" than all other games, if you catch my drift.

"The greatest" on the other hand I think is something that you can have an actual discussion on. The greatest, to me, means the most influential, the most important and frankly, it would also have to be immensely popular. For example, in popular music, the Beatles is the greatest band of all time, because it JUST IS. They were the most important in terms of influence of popular culture and other bands, they were the biggest phenomenon in the history of popular music by a huge margin (even Elvis couldn't touch the beatles in terms of popularity) and they wrote about 50 indisputable rock classics in a space of 10 years, and I don't mean they wrote some good songs. I mean they wrote 50 songs that no one can deny are absolute classics.

Greatest game ever? I couldn't even guess.

But all of that pointless ranting aside, the best game, or my favorite, would probably have to be Morrowind, Skyrim or Portal 2. There are plenty of games from the nineties like Ocarina of Time that I still think kick ass, but I can't deny that they have aged. Morrowind has aged as well, albeit not quite so badly. I liked Skyrim more in every quantifiable way, but I guess the reason why I still place morrowind so high on the list is because the atmosphere rules so goddamn hard.

As for Portal 2, I know I am in such a tiny minority in preferring it to the original but here is my explanation: I couldn't think of anything wrong with the first one, whereas the second one did have some flaws. However, the stuff that was great in the first one was even better in the second one, so for me, that is enough to tip the balance in favor of the second game. I just thought it was even funnier.

EDIT: If we're talking most widely known/influential game, I'd have to give the title to Pac Man. Before Donkey Kong hit the scene, Pac Man WAS video gaming.

There are too many genres to pick a "best" game, though if I had to boil down replayability, hours invested, and "wow" factor my PERSONAL picks would be:

Minecraft
Guitar Hero
Super Smash Bros.

I'll always find myself coming back to Minecraft or Guitar Hero (or more specifically, Frontman aka Guitar Zero (runs much better than Frets of Fire, but without the bells and whistles)), and my friends and I played the shit out of Smash Bros. and Smash Bros. Melee in high school.

Other games that are just plain brilliant but lack the intense addictivity of the previous three would be:

Super Mario Bros. 3
Battletoads
Super Metroid (deserves another mention)
Banjo Kazooie
Lylat Wars (aka Starfox 64)
Majora's Mask
Symphony of the Night
Shadow of the Colossus
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
F-Zero GX
Dokapon Kingdom
Portal

... and Space Cadet Pinball :p

I suppose I have to agree with you there. There's definately more content that could've been stuffed in, like Bullsquids and a free-to-use Tau Cannon. But HL2 still does technically have all it's bases rounded off.

Half Life 2 isn't even the best Half Life, so how could it be the best game ever?
Why do I seem to be hearing this as a foregone conclusion so much lately? Half Life had a great, consistent atmosphere (and HL2 was way less consistent) but the idea of aliens giving a small class of human police bitchin' technology and letting them go all Stanford Prison Experiment on the general populous stuck with me way longer than the story of HL. HL2 reached higher, and missed more frequently, but when it succeeded it was pure gold.

On topic... I generally think of the latest Elder Scroll game (since Morrowind) as the pinnacle of gaming. Not because of the vanilla product, but because the ease of designing and implementing mods gives the game theoretically infinite content. And without fail, a few months after the release of the dev kit for each of those games, the mod community manages to refine the game into something that would be impossible to create with a single team.

I wouldn't say any of the Elder Scrolls games were "the best game ever" right out of the package. But what we have is a series of games that the collective intelligence of the internet descends upon and improves every aspect of. Which. Is. Amazing.

Come to think of it, Fallout 3 and New Vegas probably have similar communities.

for me it's ocarina of time. I was a wee lad (11) when it came out, I got it for Christmas and just remember abandoning my mountain of toys to play it. the sense of wonder I got when I finally made it onto hyrule field will stay with me forever. the subsequent scrapping of my pants when it got dark and the skeletons coming out of the ground will stay with me for awhile as well :-/

honourable mentions:
dishonored
minecraft
eve online
zelda: alttp
morrowind
portal 2 (merchant FTW)
BG2
BF2
dark/demon souls
FF8
resi 1 gcube remake

I'm sure ill think of more

Dark Souls for sure. They basically deconstructed the genre of third-person action rpgs, cut out all the bad stuff, and then perfected and polished what mattered, and cranked the difficulty up to 11.

So, fellow escapists, what in your opinion is the best game ever?
Xenogears.

The story, the music, the characters, and the setting are just... amazing. The amount of research and true genius that went into the game is staggering.

I could elaborate, but others have been there and done it better before me. Ask if ye desire a link.

I'm going with Minecraft.

There are a million different ways to play it and all of them are equally fun.

The best game ever is Starcraft.

Strategy games are probably my weakest area of gaming next to fighters but god damn it I always have fun with Starcraft.

I always thought that Ocarina of Time was the best game I ever played. It's probably not perfect but I found the dungeon design and gameplay to be consistently endorphin producing levels of enjoyable.

Oooh, this is a close second for me. I still maintain it is the best platformer ever made.

No one has mentioned Hunter which means that no one has answered the question correctly and I win!

Released on the Amiga in 1991 it was a sand box game, in 3D and had some pretty special AI, every time you played it was different game. I have many fond memories of driving over cows in tanks or swimming away from a shark in mad panic, often seconds later.

If you're not old enough to have played his game you can't answer the topic as far as I'm concerned.

Two pages... and only one person said Skyrim...

considering that almost one year ago, the Escapist overwhelmingly voted Skyrim the GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME.

Maybe that had something to do with the game being released two weeks prior, and people were voting in between sessions of playing... I dunno.

And yes, for those that know me, I will bring this up every single time.

OT: I would say for me it is either Tactics Ogre or Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
Ah yes, I remember you calling that back then. :D

OT: Personally, I'd have to say probably Final Fantasy IX or Okami.

Such a game has yet to be made.

Seriously, every game I'd like to give that distinction to is marred by something that just falls short of my probably too high expectations.

But those that come close (in my humble opinion) are:

"Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind" once all the patches to improve the combat, fix the journaling and eliminate those damn Cliff Racers have been applied.

"Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" probably because of the nostalgia factor. I grew up in the 80's and spent time in Miami. Plus it was a great balance of action and RPG elements and was just a blast to play.

"Assassin's Creed II" is also a wonderful blend of action and RPG, plus the immersive graphics and soundtrack just make me FEEL like I'm in Renaissance Italy.

All three of these are games I can just play over and over again...
