I liked how the entirety of the first Golden Sun was mind blowingly generic, but they turned the whole thing on its head in the sequel.

Fatal Frame 2. While I LOVE all 3 games, there was something so compelling about the story in 2. I really felt for Mio and Mayu, and for Sae. The story was well presented and beautiful, albeit tragic (especially when you get the "true" ending).

Oh, cant forget FFX. Yeah, it could be considered the "easy" answer, being final fantasy and all...but the story was fantastic (in my opinion). I cried like a little girl at the end.

Broken Sword: Knights Templer
Grim Fandango
Discworld Noir
Sanitarium (I CANNOT EMPHASIS ENOUGH HOW EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU SHOULD PLAY THIS GAME!)
Still Life
Silent hill 2 & 3
Full Throttle
Metal Gear Solid (NOT the sequels. Damn, what rubbish!)
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (GASP! A 2D platformer? Wait towards the end of the game)
Final Fantasy VII
Panzer Dragon Saga
Ico & Shadow of the Colossus
Resident Evil (original) - in a cute, cheesy way.
Final Fantasy Tactics
Psychonauts
Max Payne 1 & 2

You might find a few on this list weird i.e. Ico. However, I'm a great believer in that, in storytelling, the plot is told just as much in visuals and words, and arguably there's more skill in the former.

P.S. I spit on Final Fantasy X. What a load of cheesy, self-indulgent tosh.

God guys, some of you are giving me a coronary.
HALO??!?!?
What, like we haven't had enough of Space Marines flying into space and killing everything in sight? Ever seen Starship Troopers, or heard of Warhammer 40K?
*sigh*, I guess there's no account for taste.

And nobody's mentioned FFVII?! By far the story that has really sucked me in, mainly for its characters (not because I'm really some eco-freak that wants to save the planet).
And, for crying out loud, they
killed Aeris! A main character!

Also, I found (suprisingly) Condemned to be good, although I can't be sure if it was the story (aside from the fact that it goes all Xfiles on you in the end), but I would guess that the story had something to do with it.

I was going to agree with you, but then you had to pull out an RPG starring emotionally unstable main character #25 and his group of colorful friends trying to defeat bland gothic emotionally unbalanced bad guy with big sword #3.

I'm going for the Half-Life series, because there aren't many shooters that make me even come anywhere near remotely liking the NPC, but Half-Life made me love some of them.

Portal has almost no plot. Yet it manages to suck you in anyway. So nomination there.

Same with Half-Life. God damn the G-Man and his incomprehensible goals. I'm still analysing his opening speech in HL2. Also kudos for making you love every single random NPC you come across (especially Griggs and Sheckley).

Portal and Half Life have no plot? WTF? The game is entirely about the plot, it just takes a lot of effort to uncover it and keep track of what is going on because the plot started with Half Life, was further developed through intricacies in Blue Shift and Opposing Force, had a new twist thrown onto it with Half Life 2 and the episodes while Portal contributed another aspect. Half Life is THE plot driven game.

FF7 post was obviously a joke. The user has one post and he went haywire on the "spoiler" everyone knows with the entire reasoning of "they did it to a main character instead of an NPC."

Since we are apparently on jokes...I vote Earthworm Jim. Who really expected that cow you launched would come into play at the end?

Half Life 2. I had heard good things about it, so I got the Orange Box. Despite it straining my laptop (which is not designed for gaming), I had a blast.

My personal favs are:
1) Silent Hill 2 (the whole thing was a massive mind-fvck)
2) Bioshock (I got a lot more out of it the second time through; brilliant)
3) KotOR (one of the first games where the twist had me collecting my jaw up off the floor)

I think the Halo series would have a great story IF you have played all the games, read all the books and comics, etc. If you were to just go on the games the story is a tad disjointed.

FF6, Chrono Trigger and Majora's Mask really stand out for me. You really got to know the characters if you cared enough to do a few extra missions. The stories in all of them were also amazing. FF6, classic evil empire rebellion, with a few parts that made me shed a few tears. Chrono Trigger combined every time-period a game could take you to. They really nailed them too. Not only that, but they managed to combine Technology with Magic. Majora's Mask had been said already, but the first time I got to the pre-clock tower hours, it really saddened me to see this town, with it's workers and citizens lose everything. The guards I really felt sorry for because they had to stay. Man, I wish I could get my hands on them again.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

It plays out like a novel, and if you're curious enough about the games history, you become part of it. I have never seen a game come close to the scale of Morrowind: in terms of politics, sociology, history, rumor, and sheer scope. It's every bit as detailed as the real world.

Xenogears always had me going from start to finish.

I also really enjoyed the original Dawn of War. Just somethin' about them Blood Ravens that kept me going.

Half Life 2, and it's episodes, have also done a really great job of keeping my attention. I don't regret buying the Orange Box at all.
