I enjoyed them all for different reason.
1st gen because it was like a live MMO in the school yard.
2nd gen because it was just an amazing upgrade with tons of new features.
4th gen because I learned how to properly play.
Even though I went far out of my way to get 3rd gen I didn't really like it as they removed a lot of things I enjoyed from 2nd and I have yet to pick up 5th gen. Trying to avoid picking it up actually.
Why are you trying to avoid it? is it incase it ruins pokemon for you or something?
I put ~400 hours in pearl once I learned how to properly IV/Move breed and EV train trying to get a team I was proud of.
I just don't feel like going through the grind again. Since I've played Pokemon from Gen 1 I have a clear idea of EXACTLY how a Pokemon game plays out and I just don't think it's worth my time. I know that there are some slight changes and such but at it's core it's still the same game i've been playing since 1998.
But believe me I really want to pick it up, a bunch of guys at the office have it and the temptation is definitely there.
I'd rather spend my money and more importantly my time on a new experience. I could take Bass lessons, learn how to make chiptune music, continue making clay models, read comics, draw more.
If I want to play Pokemon i'll just hop on Shoddy Battle and get my PvP fix without the need for the grind.
Still though, I can talk my ass off about Pokemon and it's intricacies due to it being an extremely guilty pleasure of mine.
