Halo. Hands down. The story may not be 100% original, but it is masterfully told and very intricate. Add to that some of the most balanced and fun multiplayer that gaming has to offer and viola. Best series Ever.
I would have to only partially agree with you. My relationship with Halo series is nearly the same as Star Wars. I love the original trilogy with all my heart and revisit them from time-to-time. However, once we get into the prequels, my enjoyment started to fade quickly and more or less diminish as the last one came out. For Halo, it was because of how lackluster the single-player experience started to get and the hardcore fans becoming obsessive and ruining the mutliplayer. For Star Wars... well I think we all know what happened with Star Wars

I have 3.

Zelda, why? It's Zelda, that's why.

Pokemon, why? Everywhere I go, I see Pokemon. Probably the series that have the most impact on the world.

Castlevania, why? A very similar reason to Pokemon, I think this series have mush effect on the vampire genre. Well, not really, but, if you know Hellsing and Rosario to Vampire you probably know what I mean.

Well, despite only being two games long, with a third on the way, I'm gonna have to go with Mass Effect. It just felt like someone asked for everything I wanted in videogames, stuck it all in, and then put icing and sprinkles on it.

Also, Assassin's Creed games are quite enjoyable.

Probably the Professor Layton games. The ending of the Lost Future storyline nearly made me tear up. The other main Nintendo series' are really good as well though. Love them all mainly for the plots.

This long noone mentioned fallout? I'm... in disgrace... Sorry, but fallout is the best, hands down!

Just pick pretty much any BioWare or Nintendo developed series.
I'd say companies listed above with Square any of the Square RPG series added to it.

Battlefield series. I loved 1942 & Desert Combat, only played a bit of Vietnam, Fricken loved BF2, and was one of the few who also loved 2142. Missed out a bit with Bad Company, but have been enjoying BC2... And I wait with eager anticipation for BF3.

Why? Playing BF2 was the most fun I ever had on a computer. There is just nothing like playing on a 64 player map with entire teams of armour rolling past, jets in the sky, gunships dueling it out over head, and working with a 6 man team to achieve the objective. In a nutshell, I have also just described why it is better than COD in everyway.

I'd have to say Fallout is my favourite just for the setting and even though the gameplay style changes in the newer ones I love each game as much as the others.

Mass Effect comes pretty close though because the games actually feel like a series, your action in one game will affect the events of later games. Dragon Age came close but proceeded to forget itself in the DA2

Tales series. When it comes to total playtime, those games seem to be the ones that always manage to drain 180+ hours out of me.

Castlevania, Final Fantasy, Diablo... but they all have little exceptions from the series.

Baldur's Gate.

Because it was exceptionally good; had some of the best stories and characters I've ever seen in games; breathed new life into the western RPG, with the sequel being judged one of the best RPGs ever made; they still hold up well today; and, last but not least, because it knew when to end.
Pretty much this. And the NPC line's were pure gold, 'Evil meet my sword! Sword, MEET EVIL!', 'Heya! tis' me, Imoen.'

Not really sure, there are so many good series:

Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Prince of Persia, GTA (before IV), Assassin's Creed, Fallout, Total War, Half-Life, Call of Duty (yes!), Katamari, Armored Core...

I think overall MGS is my favorite. Epic story and not a single game has let me down.
