Honestly, I can't think of a stand-alone game I've played for this generation that was actually really good.

Now if we didn't limit it to THIS generation, I would have to say these 3:

Freelancer
Raptor: Call of the Shadows
Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy

EDIT: I take it back. Prototype.

Most games that are good, also get a SEQUEL.

The best 'stand-alone' game will be mediocre a best. Hell, even mediocre games get sequels.

I haven't invested much thought into it, but I want to say Prince of Persia 2008- now before you go jumping on me about it's a franchise, I'd like to point a few things out. It's a radically different game from it's predecessors, and other than having an otherwise unnamed "Prince," it had almost nothing else in common with the Sands of Time series of games.
Okay, I will give you that. To the point of putting it in the OP.

Might be World in Conflict. A genuinely top notch RTS and I'm pretty sure it hasn't had a sequel (an expansion, though)
This. So much this.

And damn you for reminding me that I will never get another game from Massive. It's been 4 long years and according to their website they're helping Ubisoft to port Far Cry 3 and AssCreed: Revelations to the PC. Massive Entertainment. Porting console games for the most despicable, lazy and PC hating company in the business. I feel like weeping blood just thinking of it.

Would Demon's Souls count? Dark Souls is a spiritual successor, so I can't quite tell if that throws it out of consideration.
Well, Dark Souls isn't out yet and as a spiritual successor I'd say it's not a franchise. Demon's Souls itself is a spiritual successor to the King's Field games. To me, it's stand alone. And as my favorite PS3 game it gets my vote.

What?

BEFORE any of you bring up the do it again do it again do it again style of death, try again instanly

there is no way this won't make me sound like a dick

It's quite funny how I read the title and thought "hmm, The World Ends With You?" and then I read your post.

I'm not actually sure to be honest.
Minecraft is definetaly up there though.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, 2010's answer to Uncharted, with excellent character and an affecting if slightly mental ending.

Angry Birds - It's genuinely fun in a casual way and almost universally loved by most age groups.
There was a flash game that came out years before Angry Birds that was the EXACT same thing called Crush the Castle. But then again this kind of thing happens to flash game all the time.
I've heard that as well, but to my understanding Angry Birds is still a stand-alone product. Even if it is a facelift from a prior title I've not played.

Also, if it is as identical as people claim, have the makers of Crush the Castle sued Angry Birds yet? I mean there would be a ton of money to make there.

Oblivion for me.
Dude. And everyone. I'm only going to say this one more time.

Oblivion is part of the 'Elder Scrolls' series, along with Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind and Skyrim. As such, it's not 'standalone' by this thread's definition.
Sorry about that. Didn't think stand-alone. Though I blame the fact that I consider it sort of a wierd question. There's no reason to distinguish a game that's part of a series that would hold on it's own and a stand-alone game.

Oni.
Serious, it's ridiculous that they didn't made a sequel.
Same time period: Shogo Mobile Armor Division.
Shooting, mechs, it just needed some fine-tuning and bug fixing (like Oni and everything else in it's day)

Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Never have I shit myself more, or enjoyed it quite as much.

Wait. That came out wrong.

(Also, I know it's a spiritual successor to Penumbra, but I don't think they really tie together in any way.)

I'm gonna both annoy and elate thousands of escapists by saying Minecraft. It has very little flaws compared to other games, and as it's stand alone, and constantly improving upon itself, I guess it has infinite possibility thus far.

The graphics are perfect for the style, has an awesome fan base, pro mods, infinite replay value, infinite awe value.

When you boil it down, it trumps any other game this generation.
Well one, it hasn't been released officially yet, and two, the game has many flaws. Now, I won't argue with the fact that it is an completely awesome game, but as it stands Minecraft has a lot of flaws. For one, there isn't an in-game tutorial. In-game tutorials make or break a game on the "flaws" spectrum because of how essential it is. Beyond that because of the updates it has many bugs and a lot of the items in the game either don't make sense or have yet to be assigned a use.

Also, because of the complete directionless and openness format of the game, you really have to have an acquired taste for its gameplay. A lot of people don't know the point until they've wondered around the wiki for an hour or so.

Still, Minecraft is awesome and if it would be finally released already I would put it on here.
It's in Beta. You can pay for it, and play it, it's essentially in the final stages. So it's still a game. If it where in Alpha, I'd agree with you. As for official release, it's in a few weeks. So not long.

would say deus ex, but that's the second game in the series (and one hell of a prequel to the original. cant wait to see where they go but i digress)
Deus Ex HR is the third game in the series. You missed out the lacklustre Invisible war.

It's amazing how many people have put games that are sequels or have sequels in this thread and I am assuming we are talking about the generation as in Xbox360, PS3 and Wii? Seeing alot of PS2 titles in here.

OT: Heavy Rain, Bayonetta and Vanquish have already been said but those are the only notable ones that come to mind.

the issue is this generation everything has had sequels unless it was shitty

Here's a list of prime xbox/microsoft originals when they came out that is

Saints row
Gears of war
Bioshock
Mass Effect
Lost planet
Overlord

these games eventually sold out as much to sequels as to other platforms they can't be named in this thread

edit : alan wake... oh wait they're doign a sequel for that too
