The best weapon in New Vegas? That would be between the anti-material rifle and the tesla-beaton prototype. The former being a incredibly power rifle capable of killing a Deathclaw in one well placed shot. The latter being essentailly an energy cannon which is self explainitory.

The Holy Hand Grenades.

You need Wild Wild Wasteland, and youll find them at the nuked/poisoned NCR camp if I remember rightly...

Look around Charleston Cave. When you see it, you'll know how I beat the game with a Melee Character.
Keep in mind, you'll need to be really Beefy to use it properly.

Well i would say that the SMMG from Lonesome Road or the Red Glare from the same DLC are the best. Common ammo (10mm for SMMG and at a work bench you turn missiles into rockets), High DPS, and they just look amazing.

The All-American is my favorite rifle because it's powerful, fast, and ammo is very easy to come by. The main reason it's my favorite gun though is because it literally saved my ass when I was trying to get the Remnants Power Armor. I was able to take out like six Deathclaws in about a minute with the All-American.

A good shotgun I believe is the Riot Shotgun. Large magazine, good amount of power, and fairly quick reload makes it pretty good to have in a close quarters situation with lots of enemies.

I would try to suggest more weapons, but it's been close to a year since the last time I played New Vegas and it will take me a while to go through the [a href="http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout:_New_Vegas_weapons"]Fallout wiki[/a].

The problem with those is that you only get like three of them. Unless, of course, you use console commands if you're playing on the PC.

Personally my favorite weapon is "This Machine". Still have to get the DLC's but it's a nice powerful rifle with enough bullets in a (I don't think it's a mag...you know what it is) plus a quick reload. Some sort of NCR ranger armour and a 9mm pistol secondary when I'm feeling World War 2-ey. Wish I had some WW2 era combat fatigues to go with it though. Best weapon though?...Fat Man portable mini nuke launcher I guess.

Hunting Shotgun

Because I never get tired of pump-action shotguns, and the absence of one was probably my main gripe with Fallout 3.
So much this. Also along with Anti Material Rifle for Deathclaws, the All American and the unique spiked knuckles and I'm set.
What is this AMR nonsense? 00 buckshot for anything not a Deathclaw or robot, slugs for anything that is.

I love my Unarmed Legion character, so I'm going to go with the GRA Two-Step Goodbye.

It's a glove. With a cannon on it. So when you punch things, they blow up.

AND you can get it into casinos.

I decided to take a break from attempting to complete the game and find some good weapons. Any suggestions?
From my personal expierence (based off of two characters I made, once male with 8 strength and one female with only 5 strength started with 4.):

For the male character, I used:
-.44 magnum with frame mod and no scope
-Hunting Shotgun with both mods
-Assault Carbine (GRA) with all mods
-All-American
-AM rifle (GRA) with all mods
-LMG with no mods
-Grenade Launcher (the pump-action)
-Shovel (didnt use it for much than digging graves... and hitting the occasional deathclaw with 6 hp left, funny as hell)

For the female, as I pourposely gave her reduced str. at first, and only uped her str. with the implant from the clinic, had had fewer weapons to carry and use:
-9 mm pistol with both mods
-Hunting Shotgun with both mods
-Assault Carbine (GRA) with all mods
-Hunting Rifle with scope and action mods
-Grenades/Dynamite

I personally dont care for special weapons in this game.

Its true, its so fucking true. You buy this guy a AM rifle, and you dont even need you own guns...

Due to the utterly retarded Damage Threshold system, just take the highest damage, most accurate weapon you can find. Convenient link to a list of weapons [http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout:_New_Vegas_weapons]

Personally I'd reject anything with less than 30 damage per shot. Except if it used a different ammo than my main gun, then I'd use it on weak mobs to conserve my main gun's ammo.

That Gun is probably one of the better weapons in the game statistically. Sure it can only take 5 bullets at a time but it has a 2.5 crit multiplier which is massive. That means that if you have 10 luck, boone's hat, finesse and built to destroy you have 57.5% chance to crit on a regular hit. There are other ways to increase that ( like the elite riot gear from Lonesome Road that rings it up to 70%) but the ones I listed are the easiest. Oh, and it's technically a revolver so its affected by the cowboy perk giving it 25% increase to damage. It takes 5.57mm ammo which is extremely common and (aside from its common variant the 5.57mm pistol from the GRA DLC) its the only pistol that can use armor peiring rounds. If you get better criticals and the professional it gets a significant boost to its crit damage too.

So basically its not only extremely powerful but also reliable. You can use it forever without it being a problem.
I always go high luck characters, so I can break all the casinos, so I usually use That Gun a lot.
Special mention for lucky which just looks completely badass.

For pistols "That gun" is pretty good but I mostly use energy weapons so I lean towards the YCS/186 Gauss rifle. Also for melee the "Oh, Baby!" is good. Also on the not of NV can anyone tell me if the DLC is worth it? Also how big is the file because it takes a while to Download stuff at my house?
Not sure about filesizes but I'd say the DLCs are worth a look. Old World Blues is easily the best and I highly recommend it. Dead Money and Honest Hearts were okay in my opinion but you may want to give them a miss, they weren't anything special. Lonesome Road I haven't actually finished but what I've played of it seems good. GRA adds a bunch of new weapons and challenges and is actually pretty damn cool.
Courier's stash just gives you a bunch of decent gear right at the start of the game which kind of breaks it.

Go buy every weapon mod for the hunting rifle equip them all with 1st recon beret. You are now a soulless killing machine. I literallu got 1000 rounds of ammo for the thing and beyond the occasional repair, it carried me through the entire game. Got to the point I could one shot deathclaws from a mile off. Killed everyone in ceasars camp with it too.

Anti-Material Rifle with a fully optimized character going for VATS-mode headshots will have an average damage per second of a couple thousand...
