No it couldn't work, in the same way Fallout 2 and tactics weren't triple A titles in their own time. Take off the nostalgia glasses and face the facts. You love the old Fallout games, the vast majority of the market does not, the market loves Fallout 3, you do not, and thus the developers ignore you.
Not every game needs to be a big-budget AAA title appealing to the lowest common denominator, you know?

I hope this kills the fallout MMO once and for all. I think the fallout series is too good to be dumbed down into an MMO. Do we really need BoS dailies to collect laser pistol drops from the nearby raider camp? Or water delivery jobs?

i just dont see an MMO having the same impact story-wise as a single player game can, nor does it sound like the proper atmosphere/quality would be present (judging from the popular MMO's ive had experience with)
Personally speaking, I hope not. A Fallout MMO would be kickass, and maybe if Bethesda wins this suit they'll have the right to make an MMO themselves. Ah, if only...

Interplay failed. In a whole lot of ways. They sold the rights to Bethesda (IE, they were paid, by Bethesda with an agreement saying "We won't make anymore Fallout games, and you can do what you want with the license."). They did that because as far as Interplay was concerned, Fallout was dead weight that they weren't doing anything with.

Bethesda goes on to say "Ok Interplay, we're not particularly interested in making a Multiplayer Fallout Game, so give us some money, and if you can prove to us that you can actually make a Fallout MMO, then you can make it." Interplay sits on that, doesn't do much with it. Then Bethesda makes one of the most successful games of the year with the Fallout Franchise.

Suddenly Interplay decides "Shit! Fallout is Hot again! Let's get this MMO cracking!".. They start getting cracking on the MMO, but they haven't put any real work on it, and the clock for their contract with Bethesda is counting down.

They bark up "Give us more time!" Bethesda says "Alright, you have a few more months to prove to us that you can bring a viable Fallout MMO to the market." A few months pass, and I'm sure Interplay is working hard to meet that demand. But they can't. They bring it to Bethesda and Bethesda says "What is this shit? Your time is up. The Contract's Null and Void."

A week or so ago, Interplay announces plans to covertly (lol) produce and they're holding out hopes, release, a Fallout MMO.

Bethesda steps up, cries foul, and sues.

Fallout 1/2 fans step up and say "Nice fucking job Bethesda, let the company make the games they invented, greedy you asspricks!"
Well put.

Fuck. You. Bethesda. You didn't even create the franchise... you just made an okay version of it. /angry Interplay Studio's fanboy rant
You're forgetting that Bethesda bought the franchise. They have all rights to it, and so Interplay shouldn't be making a game about it.
Actually, if I remember right, Interplay has the rights to make mulitplayer Fallout games, while Bethesda has the rights to make single player games. Since Interplay is making an MMO, not a singleplayer, as the contract agreed, then this whole law suit shouldn't be happening.
Nope.

Bethesda owns the Fallout IP in whole. They contracted Interplay out one last time to make the FOMMO, and they failed, so now it looks like Interplay is going away for good.

Oh, and Interplay sold Fallout games they didn't have the right to as well, as sucks for them.

It was unique and intriguing, unlike the repetitive WoW-fest we get now.

A Fallout MMO is a terrible idea. Make something else.
I second that. I can't really see the Fallout universe working as an MMO...I mean putting VATS in pvp?
I third that. Besides, how are they going to make a game, which most likely millions of people will play, about a post-apocalyptic world where most people were killed off in a nuclear war. I thought that was an attraction of Fallout 3, that you could roam a wasteland mostly devoid of people.

blasphemy!

did the first two fallout games use V.A.T.S.?

no.

make it more in the vein of the first two, with the updated graphics and physics and whatnot, add in a few crazy locations, maybe let the player join factions, and presto! you've got an insanely cool game.

FUCK BETHESDA. alos no one hear seems to have read the suit. they're suing over statue 15:1114 Trademark Infringement. that's right Bethesda is suing interplay for using fallout as the setting of the MMO. so either interplay is full of morons who can't read contracts (which I highly doubt because FALLOUT) or Bethesda is full of ass holes trying to pull a Sony [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bleem!#Sony_lawsuit] because they're cunts (which I highly believe because FALLOUT 3)
two words: grammar school.

also, three more words: huked on fonix.

The very same.

interplay didn't make fallout, they only published it
What? Interplay did make Fallout. Of course, it wasn't the same Interplay as today, aside from Chris Taylor, but they very much did. You obviously have no idea what you're talking about.
No, Black Isle studios made the fallout games, Interplay published it. Saying otherwise is like saying that EA made Left 4 Dead because they were the publisher of the retail version.

OT: Interplay is for all intents and purposes a defunct company. They made a lot of mistakes, and now they have to deal with the consequences (again). Honestly, I wouldn't have held out much hope for a Fallout MMO from them, since almost all of the original developers have left to other companies. We'd end up with a game that would make F1 and F2 fans and F3 fans unhappy. I'm pretty sure there's a fan project that is pretty far along in making fallout 2 multiplayer, and adding new missions and crafting and whatnot.

Am I the only one who thinks Fallout MMO would be a smashing idea?

Shame we may never get it, but I pity the lost game not the company. Interplay fucked up, fair enough. They messed their contract so Interplay desrve what's coming.

But I still think that this idea could have worked so well.....

If that is Ausir, I'm fairly certain he's right, and you're wrong.

Sigh, how many times do I have to explain it?

First of all, Black Isle was never an independent entity, but simply Interplay's RPG division. So if a game was made by Black Isle, it was also made by Interplay, since Black Isle was always part of Interplay, and not an independent company or even a subsidiary.

Second, Black Isle didn't even exist by that name during the development of Fallout 1. You won't find the name "Black Isle" in Fallout 1, just Interplay. The name was made up only during the development of Fallout 2.

So saying that "Interplay didn't make Fallout, Black Isle did" is like saying that "Blizzard didn't make Diablo, Blizzard North did!". And Blizzard North was actually more separate from Blizzard than Black Isle ever was from Interplay, given that Black Isle was never an independent company (while Blizzard North started as one before being bought out by Blizzard).

Wow just wow I don't care if he is AUSIR or JESUS but Liverandbacon is right fallout 1 and 2 were made by Black Isle studios!!! Helloooo the legendary RPG-makers ever heard of Planescape: torment or Icewind dale (and co-makers of Baldurs gates). I know that the western rpg era is long gone but try to learn about gaming history before you post such nonesense.
Fallout 2 was undoubtedly made by Black Isle studios. But it was also made by Interplay because of the very fact that Black Isle was always a part of Interplay. Fallout 1, on the other hand, was developed before Interplay's RPG division even got a name, and several key members of the original team left Interplay before it did. So technically it wasn't even made by Black Isle as such, although it is still mostly regarded as a Black Isle game, partly because it led to the creation of it as a somewhat (but not entirely) separate studio.
