Your client, while he didn't commit the murder himself, DID hire the assassin who brought the victim down. He is actually GUILTY. ~ Phoenix Wright, Justice for All

^Probably not the biggest but still a neat one.

This this this, and this. That just came out of nowhere, except it didn't, it dropped clues for you. That was, in my opinion, the perfect way to do something like that.

OT: Hard to think of one... Bioshock has been taken so...

Oh! I'm not sure if this counts, but I like how in Halo the Sangheili find out about the Prophet's lies. That had to be a twist for them.
Huh, never thought about that twist from Halo. They must think its the biggest plots twist eh?

OT: Bioshock still gets my vote, nuff said right?

I think Kotor takes it. Out of all revelations that one made me WTF the most. Just such a good devise/explanation. There was plenty of allusions to it before hand so it made it plausible. Well played. That is one of those things I WISH I could unknow so I could experience it again.

KOTOR does take the crown. There's no point in dancing around it and trying to figure out what could beat that twist.

I was trying to be awesome and original and think of something else, but damn....thats the best. Oh Star Wars, I wish I didnt watch the movies throughout childhood to get a fresh "Luke I am your father twist."

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and Silent Hill 2 tie together in my mind.
They both expertly hide the truth, even at the last minute they don't let you have an easy guess.

While I was genuinely impressed and touched with 2's twist, Shattered Memories had me crying. It was, in my opinion, more impacting due to how long the twist was hidden (You find out the truth at the end). Silent Hill never fails when manipulating your emotions.

Holy shit. How didn't I think of SH2?!
Also, thanks for reminding me that I really, really need to plug my PS2 back in and finish Shattered Memories. And FF X. And Sphinx. And Silent Hill 4.
I'm going to have to third Silent Hill 2. Perhaps the effect has worn off by now, but going into that plot-twist blind was the single most emotional moment I've ever had because of a video game.

I wouldnt say bioshock was best twist. Its basically, your friend was really bad the whole time! Which is way overdone in games. It WAS however the best executed of that basic plot I have ever seen. The writing for that and the phrase were superb.

This might say more about myself than the actual game, but I thought Jade Empire was exceedingly successful in this area.

KOTOR was pretty brilliant, yes, but i'm going with Jade Empire. that whole game was a lineup of masterfully thought up, redicolously well laid out gambits. if you played it, you know exactly what i'm refering to. if not, then go and do it! now! i'm friggin serious!
Oh hey, someone agrees!

I actually just experienced a pretty big one today!

Crono's death in Chrono Trigger. I just couldn't believe that the character whose name is a homophone for half the title, the character who you cannot remove from your party at any time, dies. I haven't played very far past it yet, and I know he'll probably come back at some point (seeing as it is a game about time travel, they'll be able to pull that off in a way that isn't contrived), but still, that threw me for a loop.

Oh I know exactly what you're talking about, and when it happened, I was in shock. I just recently got the game again off of amazon, and I totally forgot about that twist, so when it happened, I was like O_O
yeah, this old bioware stuff kicks everythings ass, storytellingwise. anyone who played kotor for instance could not keep a straight face when calling something from assassins creed a "plot twist" :D
actually i could. sorry but bio ware games are good story wise, and i love me some kotor more than anything but assassins creed does have a pretty good one. still not bioware level though.

as anybody mentioned mass effect 1 where sovereign is more than just a big ship? or me2 with what their DOING to the humans...yeah chills with both of them.

The "Kessler Reveal" from Infamous 1. It's like Sucker Punch was trying to make fun of Infinite Crisis, but it still hit me hard.

Fears are one of those games I have to read a wiki after I play it to understand WTF I just played.

So they could be plot twisting all over the place and I have no idea.

First time I played Chrono Trigger, Chrono's death took me completely by surprise. I didn't play too many games that had the balls to kill of the main character half way through the game.
Yeah and depending on how you play it he may or may not come back. It's pretty brave.

In Soul Nomad and the World Eaters, the revelation of where the souls of the World Eaters came from, the main character's past (it's an especially big deal if one picked the female version of 'Revya') and what the main character really is are all high voltage shocks, more so than the merely surprising true identity of the current god of death, Gig or finding out who Endorph was(which likely only has significance to anyone who played Phantom Brave).

The biggest twist is that one of the alternate endings sets up the main story itself.
