BioShock 2 System Requirements, DRM Revealed

Gotta wonder why developers/publishers insist on using SecuROM. Consumers hate it. Games with it get pirated anyways, so the only people being punished are the legitimate customers. Some people think part of the reason Sins of A Solar Empire sold so well was, aside from being a legitimately good game, lacked any restrictive DRM. I mean, this looks like a small step in the right direction, in that there's no limited installs for now, but I'll still probably get the console version to avoid both the install times and the DRM.

It's like watching someone shoot themselves in both feet with a sawed-off shotgun... And then doing it again...

Doing what several other people in this thread are doing and that is buy the game but download a cracked version. I went through enough effort to clean this PC of viruses, I'm not going to install a game that comes with two viruses on it.
Doesn't the Escapist frown on piracy? Not exactly a smart thing to advertise, not that anything will come of it in the end.

There is a difference between priacy and modifying a games files. In this case the company still gets my money and I get a virus free version of the game so nobody loses.

When Spore came out, it gave people headaches with all their DRM. What was the most pirated game that year (all time?)? Spore.

When will game companies learn...

Hm. Misread your statement, so my bad. Personally, though, again, when I get Bioshock 2, it'll probably be on the console. No DRM to restrict me there.

If this happens once more, we have an official trend going on. Bioshock 2 is going the MW2 route of marketing: Hype the ************ to no end so that hundreds of thousands of people buy/preorder it and then release the mandatory information on what's going to suck about it one or two months before release; this way the game will sell like hotcakes with the teeming masses and it's up to a small lot of informed gamers (like folks on the Escapist) to throw a hissy fit that goes unnoticed by developers and publishers alike, meaning that no lesson is learned.

Damnit, I like my shooters on my computer, so I pre-ordered it for PC, now I'm wishing that I had gone with the PS3 route.

*strokes PS3* My preciousss...

Seriously though, it's like they want the PC platform to fail, making it so user un-friendly. Nice system specs though, but really, I rather have heavier system specs than deal with SecuROM and GFWL. Glad I'll get it on the PS3 though. I can't wait for it.

Ehhhh, since when was BioShock 2 hyped? It's just that BioShock 1 massive success, so it only makes sense that there are some high expectations for 2. But that's not hyping. Halo 3, now THAT was hyping. 'Biggest entertainment launch ever', crap like that, thát's hyping. Just having high expectations for a game is not hyping.

I'm probably going to buy it anyways. I have no problem with GFWL and I have no experience of SecuROM (bought Bioshock after the shockwaves).

Though this means I might be burning my feet on two gamerelated things that I had no experience of. Learned from MW2 to never buy a PC game that depends entirely on matchmaking and maybe learn from Bioshock 2 to never buy anything with DRM.

I HATE windows live, it's an intrusive pile of shit.

Whilst loathing pirates it almost makes me want to do it just to avoid using that horrific bloatware.

Damn. This was going to be my first game for my new "PC that can run games from the last 7 years". Now I'll probably just buy it on console.

Just... what problems is a 15 Machine activation limit going to solve exactly? Its still paying $50 to rent a game, and how does such a large number prevent piracy again?
It's never been to prevent piracy. It's to stop people from selling their games.
Of course, the only thing that happens is that people will download the spyware-free version.

On-Topic: SecuROM is very common. Basically every game and demo released in the last two years has it, the only difference is that it's only visible when you have to register your game. And to anyone who thinks they don't have Securom on their PC, try running every non-steam(or other digitally distributed) game you own without the CD and see how often the securom message appears.
