A black hole is what can ouccur when a star "dies". first it (the star) will become a red giant, in other words, it will get bigger, then it will expolde and one of three things will be left behind. A white Dawf star, a black dawf star or a black hole. A black hole is a sheer mass of gravity that sucks literally everything in, nothing can escape, not even light, hence the name black hole. If a black hole entered our solar system there would be nothing we can do, unlike meteors and asteriods which we do stand a chance against. And just like the Muse song there are such things as Supermassive black holes, i dont know how they form but i think its when two black holes meet but i dont reall know.
as for what happens when you get sucked in one is quite simple, your body will be stretched like string and you'll be dead before you go past the Event Horizon.
Actually worth mentioning (your pretty on the ball but I'm just adding):
most of the time stars turn to white dwarfs there is no supernova (explosion) - they simply go from red giant directly to white dwarf by giving off its mass and changing processes within. An explosion (supernova) occurs only when a red giant grows to rapidly and reaches critical mass.

And actually we don't know exactly what happens at the event horizon, observations show matter seems to stretch but that is relative to our point of view, perhaps from the object's point of view its a totally different story (very likely the case).

The universe is batshit insane and doesn't follow its own advice. That's what I have to say on the matter. Light bends in circles around a black hole, so being sucked into one, were you to somehow survive being stretched into a mile-long chain of molecules, you'd see the back of your own head as you were crushed into an infinitely small space, possibly being spewed out somewhere else in the universe, albeit as a stupidly long string wafting about in the void. How fucked up is that? Don't get me started on dark matter or quantum foam.

To be honest, after I grow up, and do the stuff I want to, I want the world to be sucked into a blackhole, becasue as far as I am aware, a black hole could take you anywhere, if the whole earth goes through a black hole, if we have any luck, we could land somewhere where we could still sustain life, and possibly be closer to any other planets, that may function as another home.
I think that's a worm hole you're thinking of. As far as I know, a black hole is a super high concentration of gravity that sucks everything into something the size of a tenis ball.

Still, fraking 'ell, the sun is an ever exploding ball of gas, making such gravity that balls of space dust clump and become planets. That's damn cool enough without it exploding and sucking itself and everything around it in.
Yeah, it is actually...Damn, here I was hoping to be on the other side of the galaxy when I was 30! Oh well, Maybe scientists will finally mean it next time they say flying cars, and transportation to the other side of the galaxy will be here in 10 years.

A black hole is what is generated when the acceleration due to gravity of an object exceeds the speed of light. Normally, when gravity pushes on something, electromagnetic forces, and forces inside the nuclei of atoms will stop you from falling when you make contact with something. But the electromagnetic, and nuclear forces cannot push on something hard enough to create a counter-acceleration that is greater than the speed of light. So matter just keeps falling. Think of compacting a snowball. Except you push on the snowball hard enough to force it all into a volume smaller than a proton.

An object doesn't necessarily have to have a huge mass to form a black hole. The gravity equation is F = (MG)/D^2, where G is a constant, M is the mass of two objects, and D^2 is the distance between the two squared. Judging by that equation, there's two ways you can make a black hole (Making F > the speed of light). Either you make M really big, like Hypergiant stars that collapse on themselves before going nova, or make D really small, like subatomic particles in the LHC.

You make the distance small enough, any mass can generate a force greater than the speed of light. When distance approaches 0, such as the case in a black hole, the force approaches infinity.

when a sun over certain mass (couple times the size of our own sun)dies in a supernova (big explosion I mean REALLY BIG) it forms a black hole these objects are so dense that the gravitational fields they produce can even trap light thus its name a black hole. Within a certain distance from the black hole (depending on the size of the black hole) it is predicted that the laws of physics break down due to the immense gravity the boundary between this space and normal space is the event horizon. It is likely that the center of galaxies are giant black holes which emit radio waves these are also known as quasars

will you die if you went into one? ... almost certainly

how will you die?... you would be crushed into basic particles before you even get close and the process would take nano-seconds

can you use black holes to jump across the galaxy?... apparently if you can control one (good luck with that) you could use its immense gravity to bend time and space like paper and jump to the other side.

Anyway that's what a-level physics has taught me on the subject. I hope I'm mostly correct. the finals are in a couple of weeks..well, back to study I guess :(

Sorry for any poor spellings or odd words ( I r spell check whore that often picks the wrong word )

I think it's gonna be a loooooong while before that baby blows her fuse. But before she will, the Sun's going to expand eating half the planets here first. So come on folks, get out your marshmellows on sticks and enjoy the vast unknown of space.

Very informative.
yea agreed thought this was something presenting a new article about blackholes but sadly no. If any one has a cool article about them or any new physics articles put them up

White Dwarfs can actually leech off of red giants somehow and go supernova. Saw a program about it.

i think black holes are amazing forces of the universe.

also after reading through this thread i learned that a lot of you know how to use Google.

i just had a freak out momment because of this. Apparently the thought of being killed and not even knowing why the f uck you just got ripped appart and shot through space atom by atom scares me enough to have me shaking so bad that i moved the desk i was on.

I don't really see what there is to discuss, since there's not really any controversy or debates surrounding them. Now, if you wanted us to speculate about what happens to objects that enter black holes, that would be somewhat more palatable as a topic. But this thread is roughly on par to walking up to a person on the street and asking them what they think of chlorophyll.

Uhh really we don't know enough about black holes to really make a judgement on one. It's just an area of highly concentrated gravity in a one dimensional point in space. I think it would be cool to go ghost cam and go inside of one.
It would be cool, but alas it is scientifically impossible to receive footage from that camera if it existed.

They're extremely interesting. They're also impossible to directly observe because of the whole "escape velocity > c" thing, and because if you got anywhere close, either the accretion disk would kill you or the tidal forces would rip you to shreds.

My science teacher said that they are so dense, that when planets are sucked into them all the matter is deli-sliced. Spooky.

Even if we did send a camera into a black hole, there would be no way to get the footage back. I mean, the camera itself would be stretched out and even if it was streamed to Earth, the waves that the stream sends out to get to Earth would get sucked into the black hole too. The only way to find out is to go inside one yourself but then you would die so you don't really get to enjoy it for long.

Ok, a black hole is actually a region in space that is so highly concentrated that nothing not even light can escape. If you can resist the gravity, (which is nearly impossible), and somehow got close ot the center. YOu would not go somewhere else. You would f***ing hit it. It is a solid super dense object. YOU yes YOU do not want to get anywhere near one. So please, do not try to go near one! You will die, and if you are stupid enough to approach one you are probably toostupid to continue living.

Sorry for the rant, i really care for all of you so very very much.... yah not really.
